It's not a true overland adventure until you have to break out the chainsaw!!
@SpartanOverland3 жыл бұрын
Facts! It was funny, we packed the chainsaw because the first time we did this route, in 2019, we had to clear a tree.

I am in NC and just starting to get into Overlanding after getting rid of a travel trailer. I am wondering if these trails are friendly for a full-size truck (GMC 1500)? What are your thoughts?
@SpartanOverland2 жыл бұрын
Mostly yes. There are a few spots on Hurricane Creek that may be a little narrow but it should be doable!

Rookie Comment/Question: I was watching an old 4xOverland overland video on water crossings and the instructor said first thing is to let the brakes cool down. Something I never thought of, but makes sense. I noticed in one of the water crossings, steam coming out of the wheels as soon as water splashed up on the brakes. Is the fear of cracks more of an old school concern that’s not as relevant with modern materials?
@SpartanOverland2 жыл бұрын
There are a number of things that go into consideration when performing a water crossing. Often when you see steam after a crossing it's from the exhaust. Some vehicles also have a 1 way valve on the differentials that allow air to escape when the diff gets hot, it's possible for them to suck air back in when the diff quickly cools. Many of us run a differential breather kit to relocate the point of intake/output for the diff to a higher location. To answer your question, generally I don't worry about it much. However if you come to a crossing after a steep or long downhill section of trail, it may be a good idea to let them cool a bit to prevent warping.

Can you recommend an overland shop within a hour or 2 from Charlotte? Just got a F-150 Tremor and want to set it up for some overlanding. I already have alot of camping gear including a Dometic fridge and Jackory 1500 power. Also looking to learn more about the back trails I could explore in a large truck.

Do you have lockers or any suspension upgrades? I really want to plan a trip up there but have a full size truck with just 4x4. (Open diff)
@SpartanOverland2 жыл бұрын
The Tacoma is lifted 3" with 34" tires, and has a factory rear locker. HOWEVER, if the weather is good, you should be fine the whole way. The only time Hurricane Creek is challenging is when it's been raining and there is a lot of mud. Everything else is basically just dirt roads.
