EPP? Hexagons? English Paper Piecing and the quilt that's been 24 years in the making!

What is EPP? I first heard hexagons referred to as English Paper Piecing about 5 years ago. After a bit of consultation with quilting friends, we concluded that it is called English Paper Piecing to differentiate from foundation piecing or foundation paper piecing. I've always just called it paper piecing. In English Paper Piecing the fabric is placed over a shape (in this case hexagons) and tacked down until it's stitched to other shapes. In foundation piecing or foundation paper piecing the fabric is stitched onto a foundation in a set order to make a block.
If you don't want to make your own papers try looking on Etsy for pre-cut papers and support a small business. The link below is for a UK-based business.

@@eleanorbirchellhughes what I love is the way you created the flowers in colonies of colors. I haven’t seen another one like it. The flowers can be seen with the dark centers. I just love it! Whether or not you ever finish it is of little or no consequence. Okay, finished gushing.

Now this is a genuin quilt; just like they were made from the old days; making up the story of your life; so beautiful! I`ve made a few quilts by machine and now i`ve just started making hexagons from the pieces that ended up too small for my keyhole quilts. Will be basting and sewing a minute here and there in between other things. And will use your example and story as inspiration and insurance that there`s no need to rush; i`ll get there one day! Thank you! 😊

As you told your story, the quilt became exponentially more beautiful with each word. I was diagnosed with a chronic, debilitating illness in 1993 at age 37. I lost my life then and had to rebuild a new one. It's a much different life, one that has ultimately made me a better person than I would ever have been, had I not fallen ill. I'm sending you love and hugs. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Hello from Oregon, USA! I have just found you on KZfaq, loved this video!! It was most interesting to me your video was very, “homey”, making me feel comfortable, all curled up in my chair, with my favorite quilt and a hot cup of tea, listening to you share your quilting adventures!!! Your voice is nice to listen to, which has calming effect! I won’t listen to a video, quit professional or not, if someone is talking fast just rattling on and on and on, I turn them off, off, off!!! Thank you so much for sharing! My passion? I love to handpiece and hand quilt and your video inspires me onward!!!

I just found you on KZfaq. I have been working on a grandmother's flower garden for 10+ years and I have a similar story. Got so busy in the corporate world and never finished but I have picked it back up again and it's my happy place to hand quilt as well as machine quilting but my favorite is hand quilting. I have to keep at it because I just turned 70 years old so I hope to finish my projects before I pass. God bless you. I'm enjoying your channel.

My mother and I started one of these over 25 years ago and I am STILL working on it! When it gets done, my grandson asked if he could have it and so, it will be for him an heirloom! It is fun and easy to do but time consuming! I am hoping to put it on my quilting frame very soon. Thank you so very much for sharing! I live in Cape Breton Canada. Stay well!

Hi I'm Lynn and just now I'm having to use my Hubby's phone 😏, Wow what a Lady you are with such a unique life , your quilt tells such a story , I'm so fortunate to have found your video , Thank You so much for sharing , I too am a creative person (not as good at it as you ), but I do try 😊, I've never made a quilt , always wanted too but never got on with it , however just now , having lost my beautiful mum and in less than two years later my Brother too , I feel I need something big and creative to do , so I've bought quite a lot of Kaffe Fassett fabric , however I'm a bit frightened of putting the scissors to it 😂😂🤣, if you know what I mean 😂😂, but seeing your video as made me raring to go 😊😂, so wish me luck , I think I'll need it 😊😂😂🤣, Take Care x

Wow!! This quilt is absolutely gorgeous and so precious!❤️❤️ The time and love you have put into it is awesome. I too have chronic health issues. It started with a back injury a month before I turned 21. I am now 50+. I did go on with life and got my nursing degree. I worked 20 years but after 5 back surgeries I can’t work any longer. I have ALWAYS loved the grandmother’s flower garden pattern. I always wondered how they were made. I just recently found out about EPP. I have one other type of craft in process. I have gathered the things to start EPP as soon as I finish what I’m doing now. I loved your video and have subscribed to your channel. Thank you for sharing your video and story. Take care of yourself and I look forward to seeing more videos soon. Laura Kentucky, USA ❤️🪡🧵

Eleanor I identified with your story completely. When my children were very small (5 and 2) and I was working part time in my dream job, I started a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. My life was fulfilling, but stressful. I spent many hours each month with my oldest child at doctors appointments, and waiting as he had multiple surgeries on his eyes. A handheld project was exactly what I needed. Over the years it also traveled with me to swimming lessons, piano lessons, orthodontist appointments etc. It eventually grew to cover a queen sized bed. It has been completed as a top for many years, but it remains unquilted. Maybe I no longer need the therapy?

WOW, you touch my heart! Blessings to you and may your creativity continue on for decades to come. I am subscribing. I am cutting out papers to start my first EPP and you connecting the outer (petals) then taking out the middle paper has eased my mind. I had heard up till you only take out the paper when completely done the quilt. Oh, I know I'll enjoy the flexibility of the center paper coming out after joining the outer hexagons to it, thank you.

Hello Eleanor, firstly I have to say that is one beautiful quilt. Not just is it your healing quilt, it's the story of your family. And that story needs to be shared with your family so they will appreciate it and love it the way you do. It's just marvelous. I also have a chronic illness, Lupus, diagnosed in 91, they told me I had a life expectancy of about 15 years. 32 years later, almost all of the people in the support group have passed on, I dropped out because I didn't want to constantly be talking about it. I had 2 children to raise and parents I knew I would have to care for, I didn't have time to wallow, so I started quilting again, that did more for my overall well being than anything. I'm so lucky to make it to 75, and I'm not ready to give in now. I just started a new project about a month ago, Grandmothers Flower Garden, I didn't know I'd like it so much. So now I have a new goal, and something to share.

What a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and especially your very personal story. So many times, the maker buys new fabric, cuts it perfectly, sews it to get her perfectly, and sends it off to be machine quilted. The piece might be beautiful and perfect…..except it doesn’t convey the heart of the maker. Your piece contains a lot of heart, warmth, and happiness that I can truly feel through your voice and description. Well done. Thank you.

Thanks for posting this video. Similar to you, I made my first quilt out of scraps of clothing, tea towels, socks etc and even though it was machined, it took me two years. I also used grandma’s garden rosettes radiating outwards (although I didn’t know any of the terminology or techniques at the time). I switched to EPP during the pandemic - I wasn’t locked down, I was working harder than I had in my life. Now I’m embarking on a fifth (sixth? - lost count). I like the frugal nature of patchwork and being able to see and touch little pieces of old clothes and fabrics. I make my own clothes so have a never ending supply of scraps :)

Thank you so much for referring me to this video. Your personal story behind it touched my heart. I started EPP and quilting for this very reason - a hospitalization and diagnosis of a chronic illness on Mother’s Day of 2020 that fueled some buried need to create I guess. I started with knitting, which I hadn’t done since I was a child, and then became interested in quilting after finding some vintage Liberty of London fabric. Your tips and tricks got me thinking of other ways besides the ones I’m using.

Your vid has been up for a while now (how did I not see it before - your work is beautiful!) and so someone may have already mentioned this - English Paper Piecing is so called to differentiate from any other way of piecing, rather than just foundation piecing. Another very old method is plain old "hand piecing" where you mark your seamlines and stitch the pieces together using a running stitch. It's a bit of a fuss marking seamlines - but no worse than basting or gluing in papers for EPP. The stitching is fast and easy, not just because it is a running stitch but because you don't have inflexible papers hampering you - or a bunch of papers to remove later.

What size hexes did you use? I love your quilt. I think yours looks more like a flower garden because just as flowers grow in blank areas in a garden, your hexes filled in too. I love that. Thank you for sharing. Myrna

To avoid baggie shapes when thread basting (not through the card) heavily spray starch the fabric first. Try starching, it will save you from having to remove the basting threads whilst removing the papers. Stitching through the card is too difficult on my hands.💖🌞🌵😷

Great video :) really great video. I was in a major car accident and I think my embroidery days are over. I saw this video and you have inspired me to try a baby quit :) I was wondering if you have that pdf file paper plan available? It would really fit right in with my ocd!! Ty so much!

Eleanor, I couldn’t see your hexagon-drawing clearly. Could you make a video using a dark marker?

I LOVE HEXIES! I am EPP'ing and working only with Tilda Fabrics-Spring Diaries and Apple Blossoms. But, HELP-I am unable to find this fabric anywhere, can you help?

Hi! After the third times that I look you and your videos, may be my English is not good enough but would like to know if you design yourself the "pattern" with the hexagon or you find it on internet?? I need one sheet with a lot of hexagons like yours to design my work.

Hi Claudette, the design is mine 🙂 feel free to use it. Yes a sheet of hexagons is really helpful so I will work out how to put it ko-fi to print off.
