+Sandy Sommer Hi Sandy, In my experience, no two foxhounds are alike. There are different tradititions different cultures, different types of terrain, and different types of foxhounds that are suited for these different types of tarring. I could go on, but I can tell you that in my 10 years of Foxhunting (mostly USA) I have not seen a fox hurt. In fact, I am sorry to say that coyote have invaded many fox habitats and chased out or killed our our Fox. Which is such a shame because they are very smart and give us a great run for our money. In our hunt (Michigan) we take great pains to make sure the fox are not hurt (Our whipper -ins can keep up with our hounds and make sure of this). It might be different in some hunts in some countries, but this is my experience. Fox hunting is about the traditional equestrian sport of "Riding to Hounds". I find the Irish to be the most amazing people to hunt with. It can get pretty intense sometimes so good riding skills and some guts are very helpful. You should try it!

+Andrew !!!! Hi Andrew, I wanted to let you know that I ride about 50 foxhunts per year and I have never seen anything like what you have described. In fact the people I ride with love nature and love animals, thats one of the reasons we enjoy equestrian riding. The fox never seem to have any trouble eluding our hounds. (in my home hunt in Michigan)

it's illegal in the uk for a hound to kill a fox, but our hunt uses an eagle. some hunts don't chase foxes at all they use scents instead. no hunt that i know sets out to 'harm' a fox

Apparently you have gone on many more foxhounds than I have because I have never seen anything that you describe on any of 300 hunts that I have seen. In fact the only Hunt in Indiana simply hunts "drag" which means we are chasing the sent laid down by a staff member, no actual fox. I'm not saying that a fox is never seen, but it is not common much any more ever since the coyotes came in and killed most of them (But I'm sure they did it in a nice way). We typically chase scent, and I have never seen a fox actually harmed. This is why I am trying to help with all the misconceptions.

+TheWorldOfJonaya shooting is unnatural for a start. Second it isn't selective; if you want to shoot a Fox, you will shoot any fox; old, young, healthy, ill, with Cubs, without Cubs. Pregnant or not. Hounds hunt only in late autumn and winter. Thus only adult foxes who are not mothers are killed. They are also generally unhealthy or old foxes that are caught by hounds. Guns kill any fox. People who make comments like yours are uneducated idiots. I bet you didn't even know that we don't hunt in spring and summer. I bet you didn't even know hunting is illegal.

+Taylor Dahle I was a bit surprised by this also. I always try to use the grass on the side of the road here at my own hunt, but some areas in Ireland had no road shoulders (Just rock walls) or folks were worried about damage to the lawn/grass/field. I must say that these horses had great feet (strong) and didn't seem to loose their footing very often. Much better than my regular Thoroughbred.

Russell Oriely Hi Russel, Some hunt are Drag (strictly scent, no fox) but most hunts are "Live". I would say that we typically are running down a scent trail left by the fox. The fox can be far ahead of use and they are very good at loosing us once they know we are on their trail. It's really cool to watch the hounds and Huntsmen work. We sometimes do get get a chance to see the beautiful animals (a Tally-Ho)- but not very often for the folks riding in the flights. I always like to mention that it is extremely rare for prey to be hurt in American and many other Foxhunts. .

@MidwestPhotographics

Satans Daughter. Yes I know what you mean. Most foxhunters are more cautious. Irish foxhunting has a reputation for extreme and dangerous jumping and I found this to be true for some clubs and riders.There are usually ways to get around the obstacles without the extreme jumping and there are also "2nd" and "3rd flights" that follow at much easier pace and sometime times with no jumping. I depends on your horse and your expertise as to which field you should be in. It was also good that the folks that rented me my horses had me over for a test ride so they could match my riding to a proper horse. Yes, ditches can be scary, esp if you are not familiar with the specific traits of the are that you are hunting. I suggest getting behind a rider that will keep your interests at hart. It is an amazing experience, I suggest you give it a try.

@MidwestPhotographics
@MidwestPhotographics 9 жыл бұрын
Nikora373 Hello and thank you for your question. In the 9 years that I have been doing Equestrian Foxhunting here in the USA, I have never seen an animal harmed. (But sometimes people do get hurt) There is a big difference in Mounted (Equestrian) Foxhunting, and hunting with firearms. While some hunts do occasionally kill their prey, most do not. In fact it is considered an outstanding day if the field even sees a fox (A "Tally Ho"). Foxes are very smart and if we do find their sent, they usually have no problem eluding the hounds. For the riders in the field, the sport is really about equestrian ridding and jumping. For the Huntsmen and staff, it is about training and tradition. I hope this helps answer your question. I know that this is a very misunderstood sport, which is why I am filming and posting foxhunts. I personally think this is a great traditional sport that young people would enjoy- but most are too busy these days with their computers.
@Nikora373
@Nikora373 9 жыл бұрын
Midwest Photographics Wouldn't it be best to split the two things then? The riders don't really need to be part of a hunt, they could just do riding trips in groups together. At least that way you wouldn't have anything to do with those who potentially kill foxes.
@MidwestPhotographics
@MidwestPhotographics 9 жыл бұрын
Nikora373 Thanks for the idea, but I truly find no conflict in being both an animal lover and riding in our Foxhunting club. (Although I do sometimes wish we had a different name). There are many many groups that trail ride, but I love the "ride to hounds" that is foxhunting. There is alot of wonderfull people in our club in Michigan, and the high level of skill it takes to ride and jump on a foxhunt makes it a sport that is unlike any other. The only real problem that I see is that Coyote is migrating into our area and killing the fox. Coyote does not have any natural predators here and their numbers are getting very high and they are killing our beloved foxes. I think this is a growing problem in many parts of this country and so far, there has been no solution.
@Nikora373
@Nikora373 9 жыл бұрын
Midwest Photographics Definitely bring it to the urgent attention of authorities. Wild life protection does not only apply to hunts, but also to extinction through other overpowering predators. This should definitely be something they are interested in. It should just not be something for the hunters to redirect their attention to, because then the act of animal cruelty by use of hounds has no end.

I don't know why this sport is called foxhunting, it seems to be the absolute worst way to kill a fox short of indiscriminate carpet bombing. If you want to ride horses with your mates and take the dogs for a walk, just call it a picnic. I don't think it can be called a foxhunt when, best case scenario, you kill one fox. If you have a twelve guage and a fox whistle and you know what you're doing you can get four in one afternoon. Imagine how many you could kill if you all split up with a gun and a whistle each! I'm sure it's very fun to have a day out with your friends, but don't kid yourselves that you're hunting. It's a picnic with horses.

The fox is not having a good time at all and it's in no way okay for you to hunt it with so many hounds just after one fox, the horses legs are damaged by trotting, cantering and galloping on the road. Fox hunting is illegal in many places for a reason.
@MidwestPhotographics
@MidwestPhotographics 6 жыл бұрын
You have a good point about ridding on hard surfaces- but I find that Hunts in America are more able stick to turf and the Horses used in Ireland are cross bred to have strong feet. But not my expertise. I can tell you that my home hunt in Michigan has been Foxhunting since 1924 and the only fox that has been hurt was the one that was hit by a car. It's legal for a reason and my hope is that foxhunting will not be so misunderstood going forward.

What's abuse about that? Horses were used as travel across rough terrain for thousands of years, if you can control your companion safely and you both put your trust in each other, then there's no risk to riding through a small river and over hedges. Horses are incredible animals capable of so much, and they do these things because they trust their riders and they know they themselves they are capable. Then again I'm not from the USA where every teenage girl priss with a horse has 15 hectares each for each horse and think their animals are made of glass and are spoiled and treated like rich peoples toy dogs. Here we work our horses, I know men who have their ponies haul weights and carts every day as we have for hundreds of years. Don't say this is abuse, our horses ability to work and traverse rough terrain is the reason they have been domesticated and are even alive today.

i agree, the horses are clearly not enjoying any of this, not to mention the extremely short reins..

It's sad to imagine a poor, innocent fox being chased and killed. If a scent was used, I understand that it's fake, but a real fox? How sad. It shows that this is a cruel sport. But, if no animals were harmed (including horses), then I don't really care.

Makayla Barr mate, the fox is rarely killed, and is seldom seen. the ones who do kill the fox are non-traditional in that sense.

Nebula Bunny it depends on the owner. Like pit bulls, they are claimed as bad, but it’s all the trainer and living conditions. And you are correct, but I would never treat me Horse with such disrespect as you are describing (I don’t have one, but in the future)

Nebula Bunny oh I watch him! That’s why I feel good around horses. I use to watch Raleigh too, but she just scared me away. But yeah, I enjoy think like a horse.

Nebula Bunny yeah. And kinda violent. Her anger just scared me away due to my kind nature. And I didn’t like her bashing on people, so I just did the easy thing and left without shy comments.
