I think this movie had some of Arnold's best kills. He stabs a bad guy through a door and then stabs another bad guy with a sharp piece of wood that he had just pulled out of his own wound.

Here's the thing, this film was one of the last big budget rated R action films the studios did in the 90s.The studios shifted all of there film production to PG 13 films because they wanted teenagers to spend money and more specifically, the studios wanted kids/teenagers to buy tickets to watch the movies, multiple times and also, the international audience was strongly changing what type of big studio films were being made.

The thing is an X-ray scope would be really dumb. Our eyes (and the devices we use to augment our eyes like scopes, binoculars, cameras...) detect light that's reflected from the surface of the thing we are looking at. A medical X-ray doesn't "see" reflected x-rays, it detects how much radiation passes through an object. More dense things allow less radiation to pass through while less dense things allow more to pass through. An x-ray detecting scope needs a source of x-rays to work! A scope that detects x-rays couldn't send out x-rays to have them selectively go through things then bounce back from what you want to see. You'd need to have one team "shining" an x-ray source through your target towards the person with the weapon! The shooter would be bathed in radiation while they are lining up their shot.

Eraser is one of those movies Arnie made when he was on a bit of a down swing and I think because of that it's not as talked about as his other movies but I'd put this up there at the higher end of his more middle of the road efforts. It's not exactly an action masterpiece like a Terminator or True Lies but few are. This also has what I think is an insane performance by James Caan that is also overlooked. I have to imagine it was a choice for him to look kind of confused and like he couldn't care in a lot of his scenes. Like when he's talking to James Coburn and Coburn tells him to bring back Arnie alive, Caan gives this look that is impossible to describe yet feels perfect for the moment.

Remember seeing this film at the cinema,I enjoyed it,funny Arnie fans rarely mention this movie when they talk about his filmography. It's not Arnie's best movie and certainly not his worst, but, somewhere in between. Ah,those good ole army days !!! LOL. 3:26 That is 100% realistic due to the Faraday cage effect. The vault is basically a metal box. Probably thick steel rebar re-enforced concrete or even full steel plate encased. Which makes it very hard, if not impossible, for radio waves to penetrate the room's walls. Depending on the frequency and the actual amount of conductive material in the walls.

Now I'm trying to imagine a sequel to Eraser that was just all about the legal fallout from the stuff that came to light about Cyrez. Like Erin Brockovich, only with an improbably shady defense contractor selling ultra-tech weapons to terrorists instead of something mundane like pollution. (Not to suggest that defense contractors are not shady, but their shadiness tends more toward quid pro quo and lobbying to get governments to buy their stuff)

About the futuristic ''super rifles": There are supposed to be railguns, that use electromagnetic energy to fire their projectiles. The US Navy has build a working prototype irl and they even released an official video with the successful testing of the weapon. You can find it here on YT. The problem is though, the real railgun is: a). huge af, we're talking the size of a construction crane b). requires massive amounts of electrical power, to fire a shot and c). the barrel of the gun gets lots of wear and needs to be replaced after a dozen shots or so, because of the massive heat & friction generated. Basically, it's really impractical to operate at this stage. That being said, the real life railgun fires a projectile made out of solid steel, that reaches Mach 5 and penetrates the thickest armor like if it's cardboard. If they could manage to make it more practical to use, it would be perfect as an anti-missile weapon, to shoot down anti-ship & cruise missiles or as replacement for conventional guns on warships. You could sink an enemy ship with just one well-placed shot, because the projectile punches through all the armor plating of the hull. China, India, Russia and couple of other countries are also working on a railgun. Of course, the version we see in the movie here, is totally sci-fi BS.

@@mattrobson3603 that'd do the job. Also basic white noise devices: pumping out info on various bandwidths. But, like, it's not just relatively low bandwidth required audio. It's video. There's a reason your old school analogue radio worked pretty much anywhere but your old school free to air TV required an antenna on the roof. Frequencies required for video don't penetrate very well.

That intro with the imaginary ear piece and the joke is awesome. Eraser's a cracking film. So is the humour throughout, especially the duplicate drill bits, and then covering your arse with the disclaimer like that... 😅🤭😆🤣 And damn, those EM guns are bloody incredible, but the creepy thing is, it's only a matter of time before they actually have those things in real life, if they haven't already that is, they'll just have to work on the optics a bit 😂 Had no idea about the trivia of Arnie not getting along with the director. I know it's impossible to get along with everyone, but you'd have to be a prize ass hole for Arnie to not even want to interact with you AT ALL. Talking about Arnie's interactions, that's a pretty good impersonation, better than the usual stereotypical shite, nice one 😉 Oh yeah, interesting as hell when you said about "this movie never ends, so this court scene could be an entire movie on its own", made me think of Clear And Present Danger. So maybe in an alternate reality, these are sort of 'cross over' films with shared cannon 😛😜

If a weapon fires a projectile as soft as aluminium at "near the speed of light" that shot is going to melt before it hits anything but then the melted droplets would still be travelling at near the speed of light. Also friction from the droplets interaction with air particles would then also incinerate anything in its path. The sheer unnecessary absurdity of these guns is beautiful. Oh and I'm pretty sure these projectiles would burn so hot they'd do lethal damage to anyone firing the thing. Even with a proper containment field to protect the weapon itself, a human could not be in close proximity when it fires.

Camryn Manheim makes a much better fake lawyer than she does a fake doctor. Although maybe it's true they aren't because she seems to ignore his pleas not to shock him and acts very excited like this is the first time she's ever done it so she tries to make things seems more serious before they stop her. "What? No he's not talking. OK, turn it up to maximum before the doctor gets here." "I thought you were the doct..." "CLEAR!!"

Great movie & choice! Never knew where the that word came from? Happy Arnold Brownschagner invented it, so this movie can happen.
