Does it make sense to spend half a billion euros to enlarge an airport that is not even recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization? According to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, yes. And Turkey agrees too. After all, Erdogan knows how to play geopolitics, even with an unrecognized airport of an unrecognized country.

Ercan is not the only airport in the TRNC. There is also Geçitkale airport which server as a temporary replacement for Ercan many years aho when it closed for refurbishment. Ever since that it has only served as a military airport. One of other reasons for the new airport is because the British government said that they do not allow direct flights because of security concerns and lack of infrastructure at Ercan airport, so by creating much better security and infrastructure the british government cannot use this as a reason anymore.

Dear Giada, if I may add a few points... 1 - you fail to mention that the Ercan airport also services scheduled military flights between Turkey and the non-recognised TRoC. Keeping in mind that Turkey has a major fleet of military aircrafts and Cyprus does not have any kind of long range missile system (look into the S-300 Russian missile system incident) that means that the Ercan airport can act as a military airport in a heartbeat, if such needs appear in the future. 2 - although real estate space is a very rare commodity in Cyprus, due to its small scale, you may have noticed that all real estate development in the TRoC is kind of extravagant, huge unoccupied villas with large enclosed yards etc. When you are building on land that does not belong to you, covering ground with unneeded development just strengthens your future rights for negotiation, based on what is already made unavailable to be returned to its rightful owner. That kind of logic was applied to the expansion of the Ercan airport too. 3 - the Prime minister of Turkey, basically as a modern tsar (czar). So, in exactly the same manner he goes about building huge palaces for his benefit, he similarly applied this kind of dictator's aesthetics to the enlargement of the Ercan airport. Thank you for all these information, especially for the 2nd point. I will mention it when we will speak about the property issue in Cyprus and the negotiations between the North and the South!
