I'm guessing that the physics behind this is that the capacitor acts as a short circuit between the 2 terminals At the beginning of the cycle... Then as the capacitor plates get charged up it changes behavior from being a Short circuit to an open circuit... Because the plates are fully charged. At that point all that charge has to go someplace so it bridges the air gap between the 2 prongs but not only does it have the output of the transformer to push it across at fairly high voltage... It also has the charge built up in the capacitor to add to that. The end result being a massively higher voltage to make the spark a lot more impressive. Then the process starts again, and this process happens hundreds of times per second. Pretty dang cool, I'll have to remember that.
