Enslaved is a story set 150 years in the future where a global war has decimated the Earth. In this future, nearly the entire human race has been eradicated, but robots still plague the land. Although they are from a bygone era, they are still following their orders to eradicate the humans. The storyline is loosely based on the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West.
The main character in the game is called Monkey. He has spent his entire life running from the mechs and is a solitary man. Eventually Monkey is captured by the combat mechs, where he is placed on an airship. It is there that he meets a technologically adept woman named Trip. Although they both escape the airship, Monkey gets knocked unconscious when crashing to the ground. When he comes to, he finds that Trip has placed a slaver's headband on him in order to compel him to help her get home. She explains that she has hacked the headband so she can give him jolts of pain at will; and further that if Trip's heart ever stops then the headband will kill Monkey outright. As they try to make their way back to Trip's village they must fight mechs that have been lying dormant for years. The two of them have a strained relationship but in order to survive this perilous world they need each other's help.

Kane22ize fair enough, it's your choice. The only thing is, Pyramid abducted people and forced them into that reality. That's how Monkey and Trip ended up on a "slave ship" (key word here!) with other slaves (another key word!) on board. Those slaves wore headbands that killed them if they did something the system didn't like. How's that any choice, as you suggested in your other reply?

Kugel actually, this is prime example of a game that deserved to fade away unnoticed. Video game is always about mechanics. Freaking mario is immortal because of that. This 'game' is nothing else but movie; you press buttons to make it go forward. The game was a failure since Serkis and staff were making a movie, not a game. Tried to combine media but lost advantages of both.

lorddidger the mechanics is what makes a game a game, but having good mechanics and having a good story/presentation isnt mutually exclusice. There is a reason half life 2 is regarded as the best game last generation despite having simple generic FPS mechanics.

This ending really got me mad because the entire game was excellent, 9/10 status even, until the epilogue that abrubtly ends without seeing what happens after the headbands deactivate. I felt like there was DEFINITELY something crucial missing from the ending, like it's leaving something spectacular unfinished.

@carlospandette8001 Congrats! You have an opinion, and you're right. It does end abruptly. However, if people can find a deeper meaning behind the ending, why insult them for it? For me, the ending is abrupt because there is no right answer. There was no good choice. Both sides were right and wrong. Pyramid was giving people a new life and protection from the horrors of the new world, but at a cost. Monkey and Trip are freeing people from a false reality and allowing them a chance to rebuild society, but they have to lose everything from that false reality, and a good portion of them will die rebuilding society. So, it leaves the player with the question. Did Trip make the right choice?

"But you are destroying this world for the sake of the old one." "Pyramid" did not argue against this assertion, so it's true. Pyramid is the containment of humanity to preserve all the A.I. evil in the real world, guys. The war devastated humanity but the dire reality of what's left over is Pyramid and all these minions. It's no "Ark", the dream land is just a pacifier while A.I. control the real world. Basically, The Matrix. Bring people out of the dream land, kill the "Pyramid" guy (The Matrix's "The Architect"), and save what's left of humanity there inside this pyramid before they starve to death. This is a very satisfying ending and she did the right thing. The rest of you who disagree perhaps didn't pay attention.
@jynxed66six54

actually, no. the AI was letting them live in a world with meaning. they didnt struggle to live in there. they had a life. if you would have given the people inside a choice, stay or go back, most would have chosen to stay. the problem with trip and pyramid is that they didnt give anyone a choice. one said they must go, the other said they must leave. she wasnt in the right, because she did the same thing the enemy did. she removed peoples choice for her own reasons. the ending is satisfying, but she wasnt right in what she did. you should rethink that idea

Just one thing. Pyramid told he rescues people from the wasteland, to bring them a (fake) good life, that they couldn't have without him. "You have no schools, you have mechs". Ok, I got it. But what about all those fuckin big scorpions? Tell me what, he has the most freaking defensive (and attacking) robots, but he is not responsible for all those smaller mechs, that, apart from their size, made a carnage at a lot of villages, including Trip's? There's something there. Was him entirely sincere?

Just finished this game and it feels like the only good guy in the game is Monkey. Trip is equally as bad as the pyramid guy. • Trip kills everyone on the ship at the beginning (innocent lives were lost) • Trip enslaves Monkey • Trip goes back on her promise (even though Monkey would have still helped her) and keeps him enslaved after she finds out what happened to her hometown • After meeting the jealous pig he tries to kill you with the rhino (what a jerk and I didnt care when he died) • Trip murders pyramid guy, even though pyramid guy is more misguided then a true bad guy By Trip killing the pyramid dude she has potentially taken away paradise for many people.... Even if these people were forced to join paradise they obviously liked it as shown by Monkey briefly at the end. Trip being infuriated with herself and realising that she was equally as bad (if not worse then pyramid) kills pyramid dude as she doesn't want to come to the realisation that she was WRONG Trip is very selfish and all the goals she wants to achieve in this game are for her pleasure and for her ideals only. The only bad thing pyramid dude really did was not give people a choice to come and see paradise and decide for themselves. (like he did with Monkey)

+Zauchi The ship was going down anyway. That's why the pods were malfunctioning. She had cause to believe the Monkey would kill him otherwise, and only intended to keep him enslaved until she was safe. And then when her home wasn't there that's not really her fault. She was still going to release him after their revenge mission, and ultimately repented(don't get to use that word often) when they were en route to the final battle. If you have the wisdom to call Pyramid misguided but not evil, then you are executing a double standard. I agree that Pyramid is misguided, as trip is. But Trips actions are forgivable. Pyramid needed to be killed so the slaving would stop. Sure, but you are forgetting one major difference, and that is the scale. Trip enslaved 1 man, and treated him as her equal, and shared the real world with him. Pyramid enslaved hundreds(at least) and locked the idle ones in a fantasy world. Maybe if trip hadn't seen pyramid, she may have become a slaver herself, but you trying to argue that Trip and Pyramid are at the same level is crazy as balls.

1: The ship was already crashing and Trip couldn't really do anything. They helped each other and that's the only reason they survived. 2: Trip had to enslave Monkey or else he would've killed her. In fact, I think he was GOING to, before she reminded him of his condition. 3: She had to go back on her promise because she wasn't safe there. In this world, he would've killed her the second he was unenslaved. If no one was there to save her, at least. 4: First of all, Pigsy. Second of all, Pigsy is fucking awesome and was acting in self defense. Third of all, he's the only reason all of them are alive. 5: He HAD to murder Pyramid or else Monkey would be trapped forever. In this context, paradise is FAKE. It's not real and the people aren't really happy. They want to rebuild their world so that everyone is happy, for REAL. Plus, more people can experience it. She killed him to save monkey, not to hide the fact that she was wrong, which she was not. Pyramid didn't even give Monkey a choice, he TRICKED Monkey.

Philosophically, the Pyramid gives it's victim the choice to live an idea of an incredible world without having put to any effort in doing, in a sense, an entitlement (or lab rat). The only thing that's asked of you is you simply have to obey (again much like a lab rat). It is the exact opposite of "The American Dream", where the only thing that you are entitled to is to pursue that dream through hard work and sacrifice, even in such harsh and hostile enviroments.

SPOILERS If you played the entire game and read the information about the game in the website, you'd realize Trip's decision was right. The Pyramid worker in the slave cargo ship in the beginning clearly was terrified of breaking Pyramid's rule and was eventually killed for his misconduct in aiding Monkey. Also, what about the 100,000 people still living scattered in North America? Must they continue to leave in fear and isolation? I'd definitely like to see a sequel.

@Treeforce1 Possible he could use a system similar to how the matrix reproduced, taking their genetic code and making new people. Plus, some of the "slaves" were awake and mobile like in the ship you start on, so possible there are some who breed normally

Pardon my language, but WHAT THE FUCK?!?! Why, man? Just...why?! Okay, okay, I'm being over dramatic, I'll admit, but still. How is this an even remotely satisfying ending? You sure as hell can't call this a victory, not by a long shot. Trip basically killed EVERYONE without anyone in that Pyramid showing any aggression. It kinda feels like Trip is the bad guy at this point. O.OU

***** *Coughs* Is the fact that the mechs seem to be completely under the control of pyramid just something we're going to gloss over here? He's creating Hell on Earth and claiming to be the Messiah. Once Pyramid is dealt with, the mechs become a non-issue and people can just live on this planet teeming with life. Then we can rebuild all the tech if we like. We could have our own dream worlds of OUR OWN design. Live our lives the way WE want to not stuck in 1990. Maybe this is just me. Maybe I'm crazy. But I choose Freedom and I choose Reality over Enslavement and Peace.

Camazotz Bat Uh...this is a polite, friendly debate regarding Philosophy, yes? ^-^U I never "Glossed Over" it, so please don't disrespect my intelligence. On the one hand, you are right, but on the other, we created technology, just as you mentioned before, so what is stopping us from buggering up the entire world all over again? No matter how you look at it, Freedom (and Happiness, for that matter) is never Guaranteed.
@camazotzbat5970

***** That's not disrespecting your intelligence, that's me pointing out that Pyramid is offering 'peace' in one hand and with the other offering 'destruction'. If it's not taken into account, it's most certainly been glossed over. This isn't just Pyramid though, if one is part of this enslavement, then one is of the people propagating it as well. One of those forcing their way of life on others because it's 'better' or because one has no choice in the matter. No, freedom, happiness, peace, it's never guaranteed. But, to have it as subject to one person's will over countless others, to have that one enforce it upon you with the threat of death. Can you really be happy or at peace? Or is this just brainwashing? Is this just being brought to paradise temporarily so one will follow directions, however questionable, unerringly? I'm not commanding you (to consider my point), I'm asking you. You have the will and freedom to make that choice of your own, something that wouldn't necessarily be afforded to you in Pyramid's world in even the most fundamental ways

@NTom92 Yeah I agree with you on that one. If they pre-planned making sequels for the game then I can understand why they didn't further develop Monkey and Trip's relationship. Also, the ending of the game left hints for a sequel, too.

@NTom92 Well I think that the story was very character driven throughout most of the game. You experience the development of Monkey and Trip's feelings toward their mission and each other. The end just seemed kind of emotionless compared to the rest of the cutscenes in the game.

I think whether you like this ending or not depends on if you like open endings in the first place. Personally, I do. Open endings like this one allow for a lot of interpretation and discussion by fans, and give the creators flexibility in making a sequel/DLC. That said, yeah, it would have been nice to see Monkey and Trip's relationship get further closure, but hopefully the lack of it in this game means they have plans for an eventual sequel. In the mean time, that's what imagination is for.

I absolutely loved this game, but I felt let down by the ending. Not because it doesn't resolve anything, but because the first thing I thought when I saw it was "This is just The Matrix!" I was kinda bummed out.

There have been few endings for a video game that have really left me thinking days afterwards, and this is one of them. For the most part, I feel like the ending isn't dishonest to everything that came before it and refuses to sell out for face value or crowd pleasing, which is a rare trait with video games. Though there is a silver lining to that because replaying the game is a bit of a grind, except for those beautifully captured character interactions.

I was under the impression the the mechs were built as weapons during the war that ended everything. Pyramid seems to be separate from them, maybe built by Gollum, to serve this exact purpose after the end was inevitable. I'm pretty sure the mechs are not working for Pyramid.

This has to be one of the coolest endings I've seen in a long while. I was half expecting them to let me decide Pyramid's fate, but I also get why they let Trip make that decision, as its definitely not like Monkey at all to take action. "It is what it is."

@X3crazyidiot Yeah I know what you mean. They could add onto the existing story. Maybe some other crisis that they both get wrapped up in that digs deeper into Pyramid's motives. Or I think they could just create something new that is sitll linked somehow to the first story.
