Eren obviously lied. You don't even need chapters like 123, 130 or 138 to understand it. If you've been paying attention to the manga and Anime, you can understand it. Eren always showed how much he cares for Mikasa & Armin.
I think it's good how Mappa implemented the scene and all the emotions came up again.😭
I just think it's a shame that they didn't show the whole scene with Eren & Armin but yeah....

Eren tried to Set mikasa free but she was never a slave if you look at sketches amd art isayama draws he always draws mikasa with butterfly wings or Bird like angel wings, mikasa is the most free person in her group she cant be controlled she cant have her memories wiped nor can she be manipulated not even by the founding titan.

I don’t know if it’s just me. It can’t just be me! I’ve watched the scene a million times over. And Eren’s eyes tell me everything. It feels like he was holding back his tears when he said he hated Mikasa. The entire scene focuses a lot in their eyes. People be like “he was emotionless” but to me, there was more to it. He loves her more than anyone and it killed him to say that.

Also this scene exists in the narrative to show Eren's determination in future events. I finally understand this scene better, because this is literally theatrical "ending" in The Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kutcher. SPOILERS (!!!) about movie ending! Evan whispers into Kayleigh's ear: "I HATE you and if you ever come near me again, I'll kill you and your whole damn family." But also Evan: "If anyone finds this, it means my plan didn't work and I'm already DEAD. But if I can SOMEHOW go back to the BEGINNING of all of this, I might be able to SAVE HER." And in the director's cut he go even further, he kills himself in his mother's womb.

Well, not in the anime. If you pay attention to what the animators and Kaji (his VA) are doing, is much more clear that he's an awful liar. Specially Kaji, he's not doing an antagonist voice, he's doing a sad boy voice (very similar to Todoroki from BHA)

Eren is a natural manipulator. He did the same to falco. He brings up sentimental topics and uses those topics to sway his opponents and weaken them. He made falco pity him and gave him advice and falco sent those letters for him. He did the same to these two. You'll see him manipulating more people later on in the story.
