They're both bluesmen at heart, finding their inspiration from a long line of bluesmen. They're both an ultra-rare combination of driven, longtime, diehard practitioners and natural talent, and they were both headed in very similar directions (in terms of musical style) up to about 1969. After '69 Clapton began to explore a wide, new variety of musical expression, while Page remained with his winning rock roots in Zep. A comparison of "who is better" is foolish and pointless. It comes down to a matter of personal taste because there is no basis for an apples-to apples comparison. You can come close with a comparison of live shows from each of them from 1968-69, but that's about it.

I prefer Jimmy Page from '68-'75, but Eric Clapton from '64-'70. Page played so many different styles, and his playing evolved with the musical scene of his days, and also, he did a lot to shape the taste of music (as did Clapton). However, Clapton stayed mired in an esoteric and shrinking musical genre, and soon, sounded like a hobbyist with as much passion as an accountant.

@@alzinn8231 imo the best playing on the album is all from Duane. The slide solo on Layla before and after the piano, both solos on Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, the solo on I Am Yours, the stuff on Little Wing. There is a lot of playing by Clapton on the album but imo it's nothing that special. Doesn't come close to Layla and Why Does Love... Clapton does however havw two killer accoustic slide solos on Mean Old World (Band Version) which you can get on a special edition of the album.

@@mattm1982 NZINN73 Fair enough. The solo on Layla is awesome but Isn't the solo from why does love got to be so sadClapton? Any day is a great Clapton solo imo. You can tell the Clapton stuff somewhat because he had switched To fenders. I would think Duane was playing Gibson's still. I liked his Gibson tones a lot in cream. Lots of people say they want humbucker sounds in a strat like Clapton, he says he's very happy now with his signature stratsbwith the mid range boost, although it's still somewhat different sound.
@alzinn8231

Nzinn73 I loved his Crossroads tone. I played a long time before having to stop from wrist injury. Like Clapton, love big humbucker sound, and feel of Gibson neck, but love Strat comfort and like the necks on fenders too. Had an explorer I should have kept, love looks and sound, neck, but that big rear wing gets in way of elbow. I don't dislike his tone on Layla but I think I like Earlier tone best as far as the early stuff goes.

I especially love Cream-era Clapton. He seems less adventurous ever afterwards. But in Cream, he was very creative, innovative, driven on by competition with Jimi (Hendrix). Page’s work with Led Zeppelin brought so many colours to the guitar beyond Clapton’s blues-scale based style. Clapton is essentially a traditionalist and conservative. Page a brilliant thief who plunders everything and assembles it into something new. However, both did their best work in their early to mid 20s! Long time ago. Yet here we are on a technology that wasn’t invented back then, still talking about them!

I've always thought that this comparison is a joke. Clapton has one thing on Page - ability to play pure, classic and very straight ahead blues. Jimmy always put his slighty quirky English stamp when writing a blues number like Since I've Been Loving You or Tea For One. Jimmy wipes the floor with Eric in EVERY other way - versatility, creativity, stage performance/presence, band leadership/vision and production. And just flat out COOLNESS. A double neck 12-6 string? A violin bow?? A theremin??? ZOSO on his amp Cab???? But the real kicker is SONGWRITING! If you were to take a double album's worth of the best tracks from "Slowhand"'s entire career, it wouldn't even come close to matching the overall brilliance of just Physical Graffiti (even leaving in Boogie With Stu, Night Flight and Down By The Seaside). Beck? Excellent technician as far as classic guitarists go, but of course less versatile and less creative with no leadership or production ability/vision. NOT a songwriter at all.

IMO, Jimmy Pages greatest playing was on his Fender Telecaster. Ok, I heard that his solo on Whole Lotta Love was his Les Paul, as was his second solo on Heart Breaker… and without doubt that is some great playing. His greatest solo however on Stairway was indeed his beloved Tele…enough said….🥲👍

Seen Clapton three times, Page once, but huge fan of Zep. For me, Clapton better technically and king of the blues, Page bigger impact with phrasing and tone. 'No Quarter', Since I've been loving you' and Dazed and Confused solos just sublime. Clapton's got better taste in classic cars though!!

@@juanmasa3020 you must be old to make the baseball connection with Steve Howe. He was, for all intent and purposes, washed up 35 years ago as far as his baseball career. But you are correct, until he got hooked on beer and cocain he was a top five relief pitcher in baseball. Back when baseball was still the greatest game ever invented!! Slowly but surely the powers that be are dumbing it down for the stupid people only interested in instant gratification. Which makes me sad for those peoples lovers;)lol
