Is there anything that Eric Coates wrote that isn't charming? One of my favorite composers.

The sheet music notation is set out different to what I would have expected. Thank you for posting this music.

Haha! Insane tempo in that waltz! Nobody could dance that fast. They play for their lives to catch up in the orchestra. I would have taken a little less hysteric tempo to get more natural swing there... Otherwise a charming bagatelle from the thirties. The twenties and thirties - those golden days of swing and light entertaining music - Gershwin, Kern, Rogers, Porter, Chaplin... Not one of Coates' more memorable works though.

Apparently you don't realize that there are concert waltzes which are not intended for dancing.

I agree entirely, I love the fact that John Wilson champions the great music of lighter music composers. I have seen him conduct a few times on TV and of course heard a lot of his Eric Coates recordings on KZfaq. I have to say I love all his recordings bar one, and that is last movement of this suite. Dance in the Twilight is a magical waltz and taken at a much slower pace would bring out it's true beaty and atmosphere.

Tis a "concert waltz." Made to be listened to. Glazunov wrote two such concert waltzes. So did a lot of other classical music composers.

@@alexkije I know. But they rush through it. They play even faster than the 96 indicated by the composer, and they don't manage to articulate or be precise in that tempo. That's my critique.
