My mum was a HUGE Victoria Wood fan as a lot of 80's mums were and as videos were new to us at the time it didnt take me long before i'd watched all my videos and my sisters collection were all god awful romantic teen comedies so i found my mums Victoria Wood as seen on tv collection and loved it, she was not solely a comedian and some of her sketches could be quite serious and sometimes very dark and that was a rare trait in those days and gave me a broader sense of what comedy could be. A national treasure taken way too soon

The film was her idea. She had to chance to write it but she felt it needed to be a male. Fair enough, when they finally do a Joyce Grenfell biopic (long overdue) that must be a female writer (Phoebe Waller Bridge, what are you waiting for?).

Absolutely right! Walk out onto any street Christmas when MW were on with their Christmas special and you might see one or two people that’s all! I know I’m going to sound an old fart when I say this but that period little did we know it was the end of variety, the end of real skill and craft when it came to entertainment. Not one of the new brigade now can come anywhere near in terms of talent or the ability to entertain with a possible exception of Peter Kaye. The rest, to get the laughs they have to shock and awe, there really is little talent with the Uni generation, just a lot of hype!

I often regard Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer as the Morecambe and Wise of my teen years, their styles were definitely not the same as only one of the acts had a straight man but they both came from roughly the same area of the country and both seemed to be having so much fun in each others company that it was infectious to the audience and i thought having Jim Muir (Vic) play Eric's dad was a masterstroke in casting and Jim really nails it, best i've seen him act but helped massively by Victoria Wood's performance alongside him, she steals every scene and she was a massive part of my childhood as my mum was a huge fan of hers and once i'd seen my meagre 80's video collection i watched my mums video collection and watched Victoria's "as seen on tv" series religiously, introduced me to dark humour and it wasnt a typical gag heavy comedy show but so glad i was exposed to it young, a multi talented lady taken way too soon and i remember when they filmed this there were stories in the press that she was the driving force wanting to get this project going and i may be misquoting here but she said something like " they were so beloved yet no one had really told the story of how they met and became a double act" and she was right

Rubbish! :D I'd have to say that he had the easiest part - Eric had more "quirks" than Ernie such as the sucking of the teeth, jiggling his spectacles etc. BUT - having said that, yeah, he did a fantastic job, he even walked like Eric did! A bloody amazing tribute, way better than I thought it would be.
@navillus1510 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I agree with you - it is easier with the distinctive mannerisms and quirks etc. but a poor or even an average actor could easily fall into the trap of overdoing those things, hamming them up and relying too much on them. I just feel that he got the balance spot on and pretty much 'became' Eric Morecambe as a result.
@Skraeling100010 жыл бұрын
Ben Sullivan and I in turn have to agree with you! As someone said (might have been you) - he almost seemed to be channeling Eric, and only a good actor would know how to get it just right. And I have to admit, towards the end, it was almost like seeing Eric himself acting the part. Ernie, though, had a lot more work to do, but looking past the facial differences, he also did a very good job, imo, specially onstage towards the end.
@RB747domme5 жыл бұрын
Skraeling1000 I thought Ernie Wise was great casting, he got the voice absolutely spot on. With Ernie's condescending tone speaking down to Eric when he was messing about, very good indeed.

Superb casting, well delivered story line which outlines their rise to prominence. Reminds us of how talented this era of entertainers were. Ant and Dec are just auto cue presenters with zip talent. My younger sister used to walk Ernie's dog, a black scottie, back in the 70's as he lived just down the road from us. Lovely man, always a smile, polite and humble. Quite the antithesis of the limited talent today.

Apart from comic brilliance, Eric and Ernie, like Stan and Ollie, were just loveable people and it was this appeal that helped to make them so great. They were true friends and this came out in their performances and though they were competitive as on screen characters, their friendship added depth and character to their interaction, understanding each other so well. This drama portrays them so accurately, with excellent casting and scripting. I shed a tear at the end remembering they are now gone and we will not see their like again.
