Why do we constantly romanticize the 70s? Sure, there was a lot of great music released then, but that's only part of the story. We were alive in the 70s. Alive in a way that we are not alive today. Enjoy this clip of me and my colleague Eric Weinstein reminiscing about the good old days!

I had a friend in college who said that he could crash the world economy with $20B ($50B in today's dollars). He dropped out of grad school and went to wall street. He was a pretty smart guy and I've always assumed 2008 was his fault. He retired about 20 years ago and started a survival compound.

Yes, nostalgia is timeless. We get emotionally attached to childhood memories. I saw an architecture/urban planning video which featured a man who was born in Kowloon, Hong Kong, basically a giant lawless garbage dump shanty town building complex full of poverty, crime, gambling, prostitution, sweatshop labor, rats, roaches, and filth. It was the poorest part of HK before the government finally demolished it as part of an urban renewal project. He had made it out and became middle class and now lives in a modern condo, but still has nostalgia for his Kowloon childhood and wishes he could visit again. But Erik's point goes beyond simple nostalgia. He is right that in the 60's and 70's the US was at its peak in terms of creativity and global cultural influence (Hollywood, pop music, fashion) science and tech (Nobel Prizes, Moon landings, computers, video games), global economic dominance, international sports, fashion, etc. The whole world was admiring and copying American ideas--even the Soviet Bloc wanted American blue jeans, pop music, Coca Cola, microchips, and movies. Almost everywhere American tourists were welcome. And the future looked bright--the 80's were still coming, the last decade of "the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades" In the 90's pessimism about the future started going mainstream, and by now the US is losing or has already lost much of the optimism, dominance, and global goodwill it once had. Average Americans now feel they lost the country they once had, and feel things will keep getting worse.

The Sentinelese don't have their own version of the Fermi Paradox. They are well aware that there's an outside world and other people beyond their borders. It's just that they don't want contact with them and will physically attack any person who tries to land on their island. I'm sure that as a consequence of this, there are many things about the world that they are ignorant of, but this is what they (collectively) choose. Probably some individuals secretly wonder what lies beyond the sea that surrounds their island, but it's probably a social taboo to speak too much about such curiosity.
@illarionbykov7401
@illarionbykov7401 Ай бұрын
That's true about the Sentinelese, but Eric's general point stands: There are dozens of tribes in the Amazon and New Guinea which have had no contact with civilized people beyond seeing the occasional airplane fly far above, or finding some junk washed ashore on the beach. The few anthropologists who know their locations keep them a secret, to avoid giving ideas to missionaries and adventurers. They film these tribes with telephoto lenses from airplanes and never make direct contact to preserve their cultures. For some tribes, their only clue about advanced civilization is the occasional "UFO" airplane flyover.

Happy birthday dr Brian. May I bring you a little hope. I think people are slowly starting to understand how important science is. And we are a lot who defend science and tells people about different kinds of scientific facts. And I think fewer people are denying science like few years ago. I admit it is early days but I think people have seen C. Hitchens, Dawkins or even Bertrand Russell! And are more likely to question faith as a concept. Of course there’s a opposite view but it seems to have been a benefit for science 🎸😊

The best technique I have found for solving abstract problems is to brainstorm random ideas, collect them all and then afterwards winnow for the best ideas / strategies. Read any book on solving problems etc and this is the first thing they will talk about. But it seems that this obvious wisdom is being forgotten, and that is the problem of the modern world. We're too ready to jump to conclusions and assumptions.

@EricRWeinstein If you haven't already, I would check out the "Fourth Turning is Here" by Neil Howe. Your perception of the era we are in is valid, Howe proposes it is the natural rhythm of society and generations. Oddly enough, the season of "being alive" as you put it, sets into motion the crisis era we are currently in.

Bingo friend. We are all fractal microcosmic pieces of the macrocosm that is source. Funny how we can both articulate what's going on here better than these two paid professionals we have all paid for with our taxes isn't it? Eric should stop dining out on geometric unity if he is simply incapable of articulating it. When you truly understand something, as Einstein said, you can explain it to a six year old. Math, music and the future of our species. That's a lot. It does remind me of my last attempt to watch a broadcast by one of those evangelical churches - message intertwined with music. Also just watched something that laboured through an explanation of the scientific method. This would not pass peer review. Of course there is no intention to but crikey, this is flying high. I typically find the output of BK, EW, BW et al hugely interesting, based on real analysis and rational. This one stretched me like a rubber band. By the time you are suggesting there is a duty to fund the best minds to come up with the solution(s) to everything, I'm in trouble. I can still laugh at the day spa quip but big money plus scientists doesnt guarantee a giant leap forward, or even good. Also found the cursory mention of wealth distribution a bit unsettling. If your pitch is that the wealth generated by capitalism is good because it can save the world - maybe? It does feel like the outcome will be a Great Separation - the elites flying off to new galaxies and the rest of us left with the same old blue/green ball. Happy to go to the launch.

@@theklaus7436 yes and, he as well bastardized the information. All of these “men” are scientific cowards . In the days that established this field open challenge and debate was welcomed . This is how we got Einstein, he two was thwarted until his public representations of his theories were correctly expressed and allowed to be challenged. It’s also obviously a lie, as no KZfaqr would turn down such an obvious ratings draw, unless they knew it would only serve to diminish their own public image.
