I’ve had a Perkons for a couple months. I use it every day. I love it. It sounds great, it’s fast to program, and easy to get into the zone of experimental creativity. For me, I’ll pay more for an instrument that knows its sweet spot and doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. That’s good design.

My 2 cents: On the one hand, the Perkons HD-01 is a robust device with nice features for live performances and with its own sound character. On the other hand, limitations like a maximum of 16 steps (without extensive micro-editing), the hard-to-dominate sound, or the numerous compromises like mono out, filters with no resonance, or the high noise floor when using the compressor or delay lead to an imo a bit problematic price-performance ratio. Erica Synths has long since ceased to be one of the small boutique manufacturers that can hardly compete with mid-sized companies in terms of price. Many existing elements could have been reassembled and cleverly combined in the Perkons HD-01. But if you want a similar sound, you can alternatively reach for the LXR-02 and help it out with some outboard effects like overdrive. This would be more affordable and even leave some buffer for a Syntakt or Model:Cycles, which should be a much more flexible setup sonically. But you would miss out the very hands-on-approach, Perkons HD-01 offers. My conclusion in the Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 review is therefore: The drum machine is exciting for live performers and producers who are looking for exactly this sound in conjunction with exactly this operation (and limitations). Everyone else will find better alternatives at a lower price.

Demos like this are so appreciated as they really cover EDM genres and tell someone like me who would have to save hard for a product like this, not to bother, as I don't like the sound at all. Same as the Tempest, in that not everything expensive is good. Yet the 100% digital TRS-8 sounds exactly what I need I believe. I also have drumbrute impact which has crap kicks but nice snar/clap and hats and one of those weird AKAI tom cats. I think the TR8-S would round it off perfectly and give me everything I need as the other two machines I already have are analog. I have had some very good results by the way combining different kick frequencies with the tom cat and drumbrute impact and actually making a really great trance kick, which neither can do on their own.

Why did that take so long, i thought about this when i had my first 808 in the early 1990s. And why so damn expensive, i would hesitate at half the price.

Looks and sounds like a fun groovebox, instant old school techno and such under the fingertips. But wouldn't pay €1700 for it, yet. What this performer is showing isn't bad, but soundwise, so far, isn't that impressive. But then again, what is. Not much new synthing is being invented, so it's all recycling and with the constant improving of softsynths, all limitations are fading rapidly. But the controls on this machine look pretty hands on. Reminds me of my old modded Rhythm Wolf (FU haters, that thing was awesome!!) I'd like to try using this machine as a controller for my old Novation rackset, if that thing's possible to send out 4 midi channels simultaneously.

I wanted to like the Perkons, especially with its hands on interface... but everything sounds so... 'samey.' For it's price it is too sonically limited.
