At the risk of sounding over the top, this really was the missing link for me. I have taken instruction for many years, and this concept was somehow missing. After doing this for only a few days, my swing feels much more natural, and my shots are so much more solid. And as you like to say Eric, I feel like I am getting a lot of "stuff for free". I am not consciously thinking about wrist set, how to start down, or other isolated pieces of the swing; it just feels like it is happening on its own. Hope that makes sense, and thanks so much to you and Jess for sharing this!

Great video. It ties in the head, ear, neck, eye, shoulder, hip, and knee together at the same time. The interconnectivity is super important. So many times I try to make a singular isolated adjustment only to find it doesn't work. The reason being one thing can significantly impact other parts of the swing and throw everything off without it being realized. You hit it out of the park!! Thanks

I went out and walked nine yesterday trying the stack and tilt method. I striped the ball further and straighter than ever before. I have to now adjust my iron length, I was hitting my irons at least fifteen yards further. Still need work on my short game but I believe this is going to be the year I break into the seventies consistency. Thanks Eric this is why I say you’re the best teacher out there. I switched to S&T last year and immediately found great ball striking and distance gained. As a golfer with lower back issues, S&T transfers the stress of the golf swing to the legs instead of the back. If you have back issues, check out this style of swing. Great job Eric and Jess.

Another great video...I have issues spinning my hips instead of rotating them on the downswing when I actively think about it. Even the tip about pushing off the back leg didn't help so much as this neck tilt tip and your recent video about starting downswing/upper body. I was so consistent striking it at the range AND getting more distance...got a lot of my usual summertime carry distances in 45 degrees with dead range balls...Neck tilt forces me to keep my hands back, shallow the club on a better plane and just have better rhythm. To top it off, it makes my follow-through pose so damn pretty...ears down on the pillow, like a G...

@@CogornoGolf I'm sure it will be. Great little series with Jess! I was taught S&T a few years ago and whist I got to striking the ball pretty well, I never managed to figure out how to turn - my ball flight was pretty much always a draw / hook. S&T also rather went out of fashion and since I was then also being taught something more traditional, I rather gave up on it. Unfortunately my game collapsed to the extent that I even thought giving up. As a last resort I started watching loads of KZfaq videos including your channel plus various others. I feel I have learned a huge amount which I don't think would have happened if I had relied solely on "in person lessons". I just need to put it all into practice although that is hard in the current environment (at least in the UK). I am deliberately trying to watch fewer videos now unless the topic catches my eye but am interested in learning more about ground reaction forces if you are thinking about new topics for videos. Cheers.

Great instructions!!! I’ve tried the stack & tilt before but felt like I was missing pieces and thought too hard on each move so I gave up. Your explanation was concise & simple. I hit a consistent straight and high ball but not getting the distance I expect due ball impact(too much fat), then I swing too hard to get distance which is not great on my back or my ego. This is really my missing link to get that consistent ball strike, at least improve the odds in my favor. Keep up the great content!

This helped me immediately. As Eric knows, I have been working on improving depth and turn and am getting better over the last year or so, but I still struggle with poor quality of contact and early extension but am working on that also. I took this video lesson to heart and the course on Saturday with really no practice. I have never hit the ball so well off the tee! 12/14 fairways and 4/4 GIR on the par 3s! And a few irons that were so well struck it was like a Eureka! moment. I didn’t score well (37 putts) but I am off today (Monday) and headed to the range with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm. Thanks again EC for all you do!

You always want to replace forward bend with side bend So the longer the club the less forward bend you have a setup (you are taller) So you tilt less 90* to starting backswing always a good place to start

I believe a big peice is missing and that’s the hip sway toward the target at the same time you make the transition so if someone is trying to flip the tilt they need to be blended with the proper hip pivot since that makes the down swing tilt a lot harder to accomplish

Reminds me a lot of the Stack & Tilt method by Bennet and Plummer from about ten years ago. That's by no means being critical. I like this instruction video a lot. Tilt is crucial for hitting iron shots consistently. But does it work for a driver swing as well?

Difference in tilt: iron vs driver? Probably related to my follow-up question: difference in tilt: shorter vs taller golfer? Seems like shorter golfer with same length club would tilt less - just unsure how significant this would be (if correct). I see recordings of myself, draw the lines, see that I am apparently not tilted nearly enough and then wonder about club length and player height influence on these general illustrations. Any thoughts/pointers/links?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Hey Ashton! There would be a difference in terms of the AMOUNT of tilt from club to club, but the same general concept here applies to all clubs. It also applies to all possible player heights. If you drew a line through your spine/back line at setup, you want to tilt your shoulders down about 90° to that initial spine angle line. This allows the golfer to keep their head centered. 90° to the back line is a good checkpoint throughout the bag. Replace the amount of forward bend at setup with tilt in the backswing. So if you are 30° bent over at setup, tilt your shoulders 30°ish. Since you are bent over more or less with different clubs, that will change that. So with a wedge where you are more bent over at setup, there is more tilt automatically in the backswing. You are less bent over with the driver, so 90° to that line will be less tilted over in the backswing. Hope this is helpful!

Great video, Eric. I enjoyed the entire series of you and Jess coaching together! What about weight shift, does weight start 60/40 on the lead leg through the backswing with no shift to the back leg? Thanks!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul! At setup I like to see 50/50 to 60/40 left for clubs when the ball is on the ground. More 50/50 with driver The pressure in the feet goes right (away from the target) to about 70-80% for the first 1/2 of the backswing....now the key is.... The pressure goes right in the feet BUT the mass of the body doesn't move right (away from target) it stays centered. From 1/2 back to top of backswing its slowly starting to move back toward the target then progressively more toward the target throughout downswing

Great video Eric and Jess. But I agree with another commenter who said he would like more attention to the downswing part of this tilting activity. For me, that also seems like the hardest piece of the stack and tilt.

One thing I (think I) notice is that Mr. Cogorno’s right hip does not move much in the backswing away from the target line. Instead it seems to move more towards the target as the knee straightens. There is a school of thought that the right hip should more away from the target line so that the hips both rotate around the sacrum that stays a set distance away from the target line. I find that if I think “left knee and left shoulder down” my body pivots around my right hip instead of the sacrum and the left side of my body sways towards the target line. Seems to me that is a danger that needs to be avoided that might arise from this otherwise excellent video.

Excellent, Tried yesterday on the range, my feelings were 1. Tension at setup,impact,&follow through2. Ball flight high and left. Did not yet see this video. Will try today. Any secret to reduce tension, attain soft arms, relaxed wrists, in order to get fluidity throughout the swing?

Eric, I noticed Justin Thomas in particular has his left arm at the top of the swing at an even steeper angle to the ground than his shoulders. Do you recommend trying to get to that position or is same angle for lead arm and shoulders best position for most of us?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim! Yes...while he is able to lower it and perform incredibly (from lots of right side bend among other pieces) that would not be the easiest way for most golfers.. I would suggest the lead arm ON or slightly above shoulder plan....butt of club in middle of feet to heel kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNelhMRjvNiUko0.html

This is something I have never done in my swing and never, as far as I know, had it explained to me by any of the teachers i’ve seen over two decades. I have always thought the shoulder turn was just to turn my shoulders on a level plane and that could be my biggest problem. I’m very grateful for this very key and important element to the golf swing. I agree it could be the missing link for all of us amateur golfers who struggle.

I’m curious about the combination of sidebend with the tilt. I feel that side end is a critical component as well.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric! We are using "side bend" and "tilt" interchangeably here. The side bend technically would be the shoulder getting closer to the hip WITHOUT the hips moving in the opposite direction. TILT would be the shoulder lowering AS the hips move in the opposite direction. There is some of each

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I’ve been following you for quite awhile thru COVID and you’ve really helped me. To the degree that I was joking the other day that I’ve been making some changes to my swing and intentions with my swing that have been so beneficial that it makes me want to leave a flaming bag of poo on my early golf instructors doorstep, metaphorically of course. And I was already a mid single index. One issue I keep working on is when and at what pace to incorporate side bend in transition, sometimes I feel like it can lead me to hang back a bit. I know you’ve done videos on it. Your Ben hogan piece was helpful. I know positions can make one “staticky” but a further exploration of your drill / feel with the iron held against your side / intercostal serratus area to the ball at impact would be appreciated by me and others too I think. Keep up the great work.
