Erin was later accused of embezzlement by Groucho's kids. Psychological and sexual abuse were also claimed by friends and family. She was ordered by a court to repay his estate nearly $500,000.00. She ended up later being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and was often homeless before she died. I'm afraid it wasn't the storybook tale with a happy ending you wish for. Groucho's friend and author, Sidney Sheldon even wrote a book 📖 about it, "The Stranger in the Mirror". It was made into a TV movie as well.

It is worth reading about her and the relationship between the two of them. Not cut and dried -- she got into legal trouble and financial trouble over her dealings with Groucho, but it is certainly true that she extended his career. I think there is no question that she wanted to benefit financially from their association, but that is pretty common in such situations. Anyway, a very sad end for her -- Groucho made the mistake of getting old and sick and that would have happened with or without Fleming.

@zkg Ordered it, as well as the Arce book. In the last few months I have read in order: Harpo Speaks, Groucho and Me, Hello, I must be Going, Growing up with Chico, and the expanded edition of My Life with Groucho, which had the Arthur's entire account of the legal battle with Erin. It was horrific. I immediately remembered these comments and wondered aloud how Chandler could have glossed over what was going on. I'm anxious to get the Stoliar and Arce books for comparison to Arthur's.

Considering all of the comment about how crazy Ms. Fleming was...on still has to consider whether her abuse of him was not more than offset by her efforts to revive him and his career. If not for her, he would not be known to a lot of the younger generation. Arthur Marx has his own issues with his father for years. Don't think that family is automatically more caring than strangers. "Loving" Arthur Marx was less than sympathic to his father and Groucho's daughter was an alcoholic, etc. Read about Mickey Rooney's last years if you want to be sickened in regard to how bad family can be. Even if Fleming had her own interests at heart, and Groucho was losing it at the end, it doesn't look to me that he was miserable, regardless of what anyone says. And plenty of people, including Geo. Burns testified for Fleming, while Marx's pretty disgusting children won the legal case. The whole thing is pretty despicable, and certainly not all Fleming's fault.

I'm new to this story of Fleming and from what Im gathering you cant have a total witch with people still saying good things about her at the same time. She may have been somewhat flaky but people are complex and more than 2 dimensional. I think she may have been misjudged and done good things, in spite of the criticism. When people are after money they can become pretty bloodthirsty. Ive seen families torn apart by estates and wills. Very ugly to see. It's very sad what happened to her.

Agree 100% but Groucho did hismelf no favors in this department, he was an apalling judge of women. He was so in aw of his mother for his entire life he could never replace her.
