"Symphony of the Elements" ~ Earth, Water, Air, Fire.
This was Melartin's last completed Symphony. There are fragments of the Seventh (one movement complete), and some very vague sketches for the Eighth ~ yet curiously Melartin stated he had completed his Seventh, Eighth, and Ninth Symphonies... although his deteriorating health counted against this.
The Sixth stands out as his most 'Modern' and atonal, Melartin is certainly striving to break new ground, demonstrating his awareness of quite a few recent trends ~ effortlessly and eclectically incorporating them within his established idiom.
Melartin was a great linguist & intrepid traveller to distant parts of the World, deeply interested in things Spiritual & Philosophical. There are undoubtedly hidden depths & meanings to this symphony, it is no mere peace of abstract art.
This 1982 performance recorded from a radio broadcast predates the commercially available performance by Leonid Grin, and follows the edition of the symphony published in 1935.
The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra are here conducted by Jussi Jalas (1908-85), a leading Finnish conductor of his day. Jalas studied at the Helsinki Conservatory (Sibelius Academy) from 1923-30, while Melartin was the Director (1911-36). The two men undoubtedly knew each other, Jalas arranging Melartin's suite for two pianos "Marionettes" (1899), for full Orchestra. It is possible Jalas was present or even involved with rehearsals & early performances or of the "Elementtisinfoni". He undoubtedly had first-hand knowledge of Melartin's style, and may have been able to discuss details of the score/revisions with him.

The 3rd Movement, "Air" which is certainly the best movement has always struck me as distinctly Chinese in feel! Incidentally he shared the same dates as Ravel, with whom I think he may have studied.

The song "Pan" is clearly very closely related to the Sixth Symphony... see comparative video; kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fKqcqaSQyq3Vdnk.html ~ but which came first? Melartin finished the Symphony in 1925 having been working on it for several years. The song is said to date from no later than 1920 ~ at this time Melartin set a number of poems by Finland's then most famous poet Veikko Antero Koskenniemi (1885-1962), "Pan" is from his "Runoja" published in 1906. translate.google.co.uk/transl...

Many thanks for this priceless recording. Do you detect any influence by Carl Nielsen?

There are broad parallels with Nielsen's Sixth which appeared at much the same time, in the sense that both represent bold and somewhat unexpected leaps towards modernism. But whereas Melartin (who may have started work on his significantly earlier) respects and embraces modernism in a serious way, Nielsen cannot resist outrageously satirising the genre. They certainly knew each other, Melartin conducted works by Nielsen, there are photos of them together ~ it's possible there was even a friendly rivalry involved in the genesis of these parallel symphonies.

More than a touch of Mahler 3 in the first movement, methinks. Great work though,

As far as I know, Melartin actually conducted the first Mahler performance in the Nordic countries: the first movement of the Second Symphony in a concert by the Viipuri City Orchestra, which was part of Finland at that time, in the early years of the 20th century. It's interesting how Melartin managed to avoid the influence of Sibelius in early 20th-century Finland. In Melartin's symphonies, one can see some influence from Mahler and Bruckner, even though he did not aim for the megalomania characteristic of Mahler, in particular.
