Always a pleasure listening to a piece rich in harmony from a composer I've never heard of. Challenging but wonderful music.

This composer does not make it to the English Wikipedia, apart from a passing mention as a composer of violin pieces. He does get a mention in the German, French, Japanese and Catalan versions. Volunteers anybody?

Never heard of this composer, but this is good, Spielbergian fun! I particularly like the cyclical, almost narrative elements to the piece ... Beautiful fantasy themes ... I feel like I should be reading Maeterlinck.

Grazie a Kuhlau e YT !

Puzzling...Being another case of a marked transition period (last 4 years of 19th Century - more than half of the XXth Century), Flury did not submit to certain "new styles or sources" such as Strawinsky, Hindemith or even Bartok. We may identify here and there Sibelius, Prokofieff, Grieg even a last waves of Romanticism..., quite interesting. Well, as Herzfeld used to say, "we can never forget that geographic environment is a basic labelling of classic music composition", and Switzerland is a very special "self encircled" magical kingdom. Maybe Flury sent us a good postcard of being Swiss. If so, schüss !

Ottima esecuzione e ottimo caricamento.

Loved this Symphony: the post-tonal, late-Romantic language; the grand, fanfare-like, brassy gestures; the quiet, pastoral "vistas" (e.g. 7:54 - ); and the lush, colorful orchestration (e.g. scherzo) !!! Flury studied with E. Kurth (known theorist) and J. Marx, great composer of lush, colorful, orchestral music (toccataclassics.com/product/richard-flury-the-life-and-music-of-a-swiss-romantic/).

It's a bit strange that in 1923 were audio recordings and instead of that, Richard only made a few musical notes. But still, great job and thanks for sharing though.

Reminds me of Scriabin's first symphony mixed a bit with a bit of Brucknerian orchestration. My only issue is with the recording: a lot of the more obscure composers tend to get interpreted very conservatively. The brass, for example, will tone down their bombardment when the repertoire shifts from Mahler/ Bruckner/ Prokofiev to one of their more obscure contemporaries. The result is that you get rather cold, monotonous interpretations because the precedent of what Flury should sound like hasn't been established. IDK the recording just feels a bit flat and I feel like obscurities like this would benefit from a bit of flamboyance on the orchestra's part.

It is conducted by his son, Urs Joseph Flury who knows his fathers intentions with the piece better than anyone else and is a fantastic musician and composer himself, check out his violin concerto🙂

@@roo861 listening again, I notice it's more a fault with the poor recording quality than the actual orchestra. quite hollow, not much bass to the mix. Sounds like two mics in a shitty hall lol.

Un peu redondant et convenu mais pas désagréable pour autant. On a entendu pire dans un univers musical souvent lénifiant, répétitif et martelé, filtré jusqu’à la névrose par des radios de chapelle !
