If you’re from the older generation you’d know there was a time when the Bundesliga was actually one of the most competitive and entertaining leagues in the world instead of it being a one horse race wherein teams like Dortmund, Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Bremen, Schalke, Hamburg, Hannover, Stuttgart all had world class players and would actually try to compete for the title rather than act as feeder clubs to Bayern.

Aubameyang would have been an interesting case to look at. Came to a struggling Arsenal, received a golden boot while Arsenal was still struggling

I love the premier league but I really dislike this narrative. Auba, KDB, Sane, Son and many others have been top players in the Prem from Bundesliga. You stated that big money signings failed to live up to expectations. Maybe that’s the real issue. We have seen many top Premier league players struggle in other leagues. I.e Hazard, Coutinho, and Cesc Fabregas. In fact, most of the top players in Prem are from other leagues. Sanchez ruled EPL until his big salary move to Man U. The common thing with top players failing elsewhere is money and expectations. Some players only have ambition for money. Once they get that they stop trying to be the best. Others cave under pressure. It has nothing to do with the premier league. It can happen in almost every league. Bundesliga tax my @ss.

I think haaland has answered the question of whether Bundesliga tax exist. It clearly doesn't.

The real reason is when English team signs players they don't know how to use them. They sign them cuz they got a lot of money. While teams from Germany don't have much money to spend on the transfer market so they sign their players wisely and know how to use them. For example when man city sign Bundesliga players they all do very good cuz pep is smart manager and knows what players he needs and knows how to use them. (kdb, gumdogan, sane, dzeko, kompany)

Thank god for all the comments here. I dont understand how a channel like this doesnt look at other factors, like the system of the club that the player played in vs the new one. Its nice that you made the comparison to other leagues but you could use your position to inform people better about how multiple factors play into the performance of a player.

The "Bundesliga Tax" is such a stupid term. Is there precedent for Bundesliga players losing production when moving to the Premier League? Yes. There are a number of different factors. From the high lines German teams play to the attacking nature of the league to the slightly greater emphasis on speed rather than tactical movement to the quality of the Bundesliga and its' defenders to teams not using the Bundesliga players right. But the term "Bundesliga tax" only exists to dumb down this discussion and condense the reasons for Bundesliga players not doing as well in the Premier League down into a singular reason. That reason being "well, the Bundesliga sucks hahaha". It kills any kind of meaningful discussion and actual logical arguments in favor of making a massive over generalization. Is the overall quality of the Bundesliga as good as the quality in the Premier League? No. Is it incredibly short sighted to make this the only reason for Buli imports struggling in the Premier League? Yes.

Sane,kdb,gundogan,son,mane and so many more from the bundesliga have been extremely successful in prem. It’s a stupid myth

Maybe they should take into consideration that the likes of Werner, & Havertz had their teams and play styles build around them in the Bundesliga and this wasn't the case anymore in the Prem. Bayern didn't want Werner because they would have needed to change the system to bring out the best out of him.

Ridiculous that after Athletik, Tifo of all have stooped as low to using "Bundesliga tax" unironically. Here's the thing, Bundesliga averages 0.3 to 0.4 goals per match more than the Premier league. That's a stylistic difference to the way football's played. Of course, if a player moves from a league with more attacking teams to a league with more defensive teams there will be a drop in output. But, where is the reporting on players who actually performed better in PL than BuLi? This last season. Dennis from Watford. Hwang hee chan from Wolves. Demarai Gray in Everton. Leroy Sane has had better seasons at PL than with Bayern. Let me make it clear. I'm not saying Bundesliga is better than Premier League. The English clubs are richer, buy and retain more players in their prime. Absolutely PL is the stronger league. But, its mental to only look at the drop off in attacking output in terms of strength of league and not consider tactical fit of the player moving from team to team, the style of football prevalent in opposition teams. Does anyone REALLY expect Sancho to have the same numbers moving from an attacking force in Dortmund to a United team that's tactically weaker than half of the PL teams? Sancho's been good in Europe. No one should be talking about any hypothetical tax. Haaland has been generational in Europe. The only argument against him are primarily injuries. Secondarily, moving from a counter attacking Rose's BVB and his former Salzburg side to a possession heavy City side. He does have some experience in a possession focused side under Favre and Terzic.

I wonder if there is a tax from moving anywhere to anywhere. Which is to say, changing team, tactics and the whole of your life might affect how you play. That would be shocking.

Would be interesting to see whether the same tax exists for premier league players going abroad. Might be more of a new league/country tax that is applicable to football in general rather than the premier league specifically.

There's also a "player switching teams" tax in general. Some players perform so well not because of the league they play in, but because their team was built around their playing style. It's not included in that table at 2:15, but I'd bet that players on average suffer a drop off in production when they leave the EPL for other leagues as well.

I’d love a video specifically about Arsenal signings made in the last 6 years and where they are now. It feels like there has been a lot invested in players that ended up only spending a year at the club or underperformed/spent a lot of time injured in their first season after signing. And even if they didn’t underperform, they ended up excelling at very different things than why they were initially scouted (i.e. Lacazette and the number of assists/goals he was involved in)

Bundesliga is a more attacking league, with more goals per game. Of course offensive stats will drop off when you have to play teams like Burnley.

It’s not entirely as cut and dry because a lot of players leave big winning teams who have large spells of possession and obviously create a lot of chances such as Lyon, Dortmund, Benfica and Inter and then join clubs like Southampton etc who are going to lose more games than they win, will have less of the ball and naturally create less chances so it’s not as simple as saying it’s a ‘Premier League tax’

What I am curious to know though is the cost of those transfers in the “tax” at those high transfer fees you expect out put. Obviously young/old players and non “world class” or top level players will struggle coming from easier leagues to play in the premier league but these high transfer fee players are held to higher standards

It seems clear that by top 5th percentile you mean between 80th and 99th percentile but someone could easily miss the context and think you meant 5th percentile (as in, very bad). Finally, saying something like "top 1/5th percentile" is deceiving because at far ends of distributions the "top 1/5th" percentile" could easily cover two total standard deviations of data.

One thing to note for the Bundesliga is that it has the youngest average age of any of the big 5 leagues. It's really garnered a reputation as the place for a young player to go to make a name for themselves. With the sheer number of players that spend their development years in the Bundesliga and then transfer to other leagues it's inevitable that you're going to get a number of disappointments, especially as so many big clubs fall head over heels trying to find the next big thing. When you buy someone who's 20, you're buying them for their potential. When you're buying someone who's 25 or 30 you're getting the finished product. As for Haaland in particular, I think he'll work out for City. His goal rate is so strong (averaged a goal per game witg Dortmund) that even with a drop off in that rate he would still be putting up impressive numbers. Plus, he's succeeded with every team he's played with so far, from Salzburg to Dortmund even to Norway (unlike Werner who only really did well with Leipzig when the whole system was built around him) and Pep knows how to get the best out of his players. The only major risk is how injury prone he's been with Dortmund but then again so have a lot of players so maybe it has something to do with their style of play.

I bet if you looked at the players that succeeded vs the ones that didn't, the ones that did are athletic, big units, or both who also have enough technical skill to adapt to be moderately good at resisting an aggressive press. The ones who don't succeed being lacking in one of those areas.

Around 66% of players in the premier league are foreigners, and yet the premier league is the most competitive league in the world. Even though SOME players have flopped after joining the EPL from other European leagues, most of them have thrived.

Footballers aren't robots so language, culture and friendships/family affect how well someone adapts to a new league. Some may struggle because they go from being the ultimate superstar (Sancho) to being just one of many. A dropoff in Scoring numbers is expected and normal when a player joins the Premier League considering how most teams park the bus all the time.

If the so called Premier League tax is contingent on the strength of the team you join, wouldn't that imply that the Premier League is the weaker league in a footballing sense? The players who've joined the two strongest PL teams have had great careers since. Salah, KDB, Gundogan, Silva, Firmino, and even Origi have improved since joining their respective teams. Other players who joined from the same leagues as them have not. Does that mean that outside of the strongest teams, PL football is actually weak?

Bundesliga is a one team league but not a farmers league, their teams generally perform well and better than English clubs until recent years in europe and they consistently develop the best young players in world football every season. Defo a very underrated league.

I feel like most big signings flop, even from the prem elsewhere or within the same leagues. Hazard to Real, Sanchez to Man United, Fernando Torres at Chelsea, Griezmann to Barca, Coutinho to Barca, Bonucci to AC Milan, Drinkwater to Chelsea, Grealish to city, Maguire to United, Lingard's successful loan at West Ham then continued flop at United, etc. Different systems offer chances for different players to shine - which is more important for midfielders and defenders than attackers but still More significantly, the mental tole of making global news for a big transfer has a massive impact on young ppl. Playing in front of a new crowd, especially in England where fans are much less supportive, is always gonna affect people. Attackers miss a couple opportunities early on and it just spirals from there. Werner is a great example of a combination of system and confidence issues. He plays for a pretty defensive Chelsea side with more of a buildup play thing going on. He wasn't performing well, he was away from where he grew up, and he had new fans to impress. When professional footballers are missing from like 5 yards out consistently, you know its a confidence issue; they all have the capability of putting those away immediately. Put him at Leicester, though, and you'd likely see someone who's troubles being away from home and at a new club canceled out by a system that massively supports his get-in-behind style. Absolutely the prem is a difficult transition because of the increased quality, but people act like there's no other factors beyond a slight quality difference. It's more that big transfers generally don't live up to expectation. Plus, even those that flop from the Bundesliga often recover when they gain their momentum back (Dembele, Auba, Pulisic, Gundogan, Thiago kinda, Mkhitaryan, Calhanoglu, etc).

The Mentioning of Lukaku is a funny one.. At WBA he came through as player, then he went to Everton did well, got sold to the toffees next summer for nearly 40 million € did so well that he got sold to United for €85m did okay, but it in the he was a scape goat to an extent, let go to Inter Milan for €74m were he relived his prime from Everton/WBA, then only to fail miserably at Chelsea for 113m € when they couldve looked at United and seen hes a target man and not much else now, seriously weak on his first touch which made hil useless at United and now Chelsea.. But still the man scores goals when he gets going

I don't agree with the video. When players are expected to shoe horn into existing systems (Havertz, Werner, ), they struggle. But when the teams are built around the players, then of course they'll do better. Then there's factors such as coaching, the club environment and the pressures that come with it.

Some people in the comments didn't even let the video finish. This is not some discrediting of Erling Haaland's career. It is just an examination on how and why many players lose productivity when entering the Premier League, and what clubs have or could do to avoid such pitfalls.

Hm, when looking at the data, it would be more solid to look at overall performance changes firm and to every league. Moving to a different country, gaining trust in a totally different team and playing in a different league are factors that would throw off every human being, at least in the beginning. So, is there a difference between French players moving to Italy? Is it bigger or worse than players moving the other way around? What about players from the PL moving to other leagues? All of this seems very anecdotal and also uncontrolled for factors like source team, target team, age, number of prior county moves etc

I'd be very interested to see this broken down how much performance variance there is when a player moves to a league in a country whose language they do not yet speak, as opposed to moving to one where they can speak fluently from day 1. I bet the isolation and confusion of not being able to easily communicate with teammates and coaches would likely be correlated to poorer performances.

The tax is simply because leagues manage differently. Germany is faster flowing and more tactical while England is slower and less scoring means it’s tough to adapt

Players that leave their clubs for the Premier league are usually star players of their respective clubs. Therefore, the tactical system is often build to support the star players and their individual strenghts. When those players join Premier league clubs they are often just one of many and thus have to adapt to the system instead of the other way around. Of course players perform individually better when they are the center piece of their line up.

To be fair on average Bundesliga games have the highest amount of goals in general, so of course the numbers drop when moving to a less scoring league. Also dont a lot of players struggle when moving to a new team in their first season, no matter if they switch league?

I feel the stats in the video are incomplete. If you compare the EPL to LA Liga, there's a larger drop off in stats than from LA Liga to EPL, basically meaning players from LA Liga have it easiest adapting to other leagues
