Haaland is overrated. 21/22 season ManCity scored 99 league goals, with no Haaland. Their top scorers were KDB 15, Sterling 13, Mahrez 11, Foden 9, Jesus 8, Gundogan 8, BernadoSilva 8 goals. 22/23 season ManCity scored 94 league goals, with Haaland scoring 36 of them. If you don’t have a goal hanger, your other players would score more. If you think adding Haaland to that 21/22 ManCity 99 goals would result into 135 goals a season, you’re wrong. They have literally scored 5 less after adding Haaland. Their team won the treble, not Haaland. Haaland has made them worse. The role of a false 9 is to create for wide forwards, allowing them to become the strikers finishing off chances. The role of a number 9 is to finish off chances created by the wingers. People are wrong if they think that a false 9 is worse than a number 9 just because they score less goals. Alternatively, people tends to overrate number 9 just because they scores lots of goals. Haaland is one of the best finisher. But he offers literally nothing else in possession. Because of him, his team would create less and lower quality chances. So his team would score less in total.

@@Vizeh Do you prefer a striker that scores 50 goals a season, but because of him, his team can only score 60 in total? Or a striker who score 10 goals a season, but because of him, his team can score 120 goals in total?

I watched Haaland in BVB, the counter-attacking football they played there, suited him very much. He is fast and strong and his finishing is elite. In BVB, many goals came from a counter-attack, and from what I saw, Haaland is very good with the ball when he runs behind the defenders and has some space. It was really fun watching him there since he got the ball a lot more than in city. Premier League is much more different than Bundesliga, and City's playstyle is so much more different than BVB. And looking at Haaland breaking records despite playing in a way that doesn't suit him, is very impressive (of course he plays for City who has the best players, but again, it was his FIRST season in the Premier League). My Point, Haaland can play and score many fun and beautiful goals, but in City, their playstyle doesn't allow him to. The Bundesliga youtube channel, has all of Haalands goals in a compilation, please watch them, his goals are really good :)

I fully agree. I've watched Haaland since BVB and he's been so impressive through the seasons. I don't quite understand the disrespect Haaland gets - he managed to captivate the Prem and while it can be attributed to City's extraordinary playmakers, he's the only one who managed to utilize it. While his finesse and style aren't always charming, his strength, pace, and reliability are underrated. And he's also an awesome lad, or at least appears to be. Personally, I'd want him to win Ballon d'Or, but I also understand the other candidates, just not the disrespect.

If Haaland is just a Tap-in merchant then what does that say about players like Van Nistelrooy, Batistuta, Inzaghi, Klose. These players could be seen as tap in merchants to a younger audience, but to be in those goal scoring positions you must possess elite level IQ in terms of positioning, anticipation and reaction timing. The players I mentioned were considered some of the greatest out and out goal scorers of their time period. Haaland can be seen as a modern equal to them, not as flashy on the ball but so lethal that he makes up for an apparent lack of flair. His style is old school, and people place so much stock on 1 man dribbling past a whole defence that Haaland looks boring to the naked eye, but he offers a lot more in terms of off-the-ball movement

@thierryhenry674
@thierryhenry674 9 ай бұрын
The game is not about 4 midfielders creating for 2 strikers anymore. Attacking teams realise they could send more players up front to create overloads. Defending teams send more players back to counter that. So the distance between attack, midfield and defence is becoming closer in the modern game. The modern game is a game of 11 players creating against a low block of 11 players. You can’t afford to play a 10 vs 11 game. That’s why the false 9 is so popular because they offer that extra creativity. And it’s not just about dribbling skills. Aubameyang and Nketiah are better finishers than Jesus. However, Aubameyang and Nketiah don’t have the dribbling skills, silky touches or insane close control within tight spaces. They don’t have the fluidity to drop deep, roam around, to interchange positions with others, creating temporary overloads, creating chaos and positional confusion for the opponent teams. They can’t create play, create spaces or create chances like Jesus with his silky teamwork combination passes, tiki taka passes and through passes. Arsenal play so much better with Jesus as the lone false 9 because of the extra creativity he can offer to unlock the opponent’s low blocks. He allows everyone around him to play much better.

Something that people don't seem to understand is that In the big games where he "ghosted" he usually was marked by 2 and sometimes even 3 defenders. They know that if they let Haaland roam free he will score, and that his size, pace and speed make him very difficult to defend. As such, they choose to put multiple men on him. What this does is allow other players on his team to have a much easier time scoring. He moves defenders away, allowing for a clearer path for players like Bernardo De Bruyne and Rodri to score.

However, Haaland made the difference for city. It takes a lot to win a treble. It takes different players stepping up at different times during the long competitions. Regardless, if being a tap in merchant was even a thing, it would still be an incredibly valuable playstyle. That being said, watch Haaland play for 5 minutes. Watch his finishes. He is an elite striker. Also, if my team had a tap in merchant that scores even half the goals Haaland scored this season, then that player has incredible value.

He gets mocked for the quality of goals that he scores but at the end of the day he’s putting the ball in the back of the net and throughout his career he has been scoring goals with consistency and he being good isn’t because he plays for Manchester City that helps him but he always finds a way to score, Salzburg 29 goals in 27 games, Norway national team 25 goals in 26 games Dortmund 86 goals in 89 games Manchester City 58 goals in 59 games. That’s consistency for you and Erling Haaland is still only 23 years old and the rate in which he’s been scoring goals is unbelievable and the scary thing about him is that he’s not even in his peak not at his full potential and can you imagine him in his prime, the guy at 23 has won a premier league Golden Boot broke the scoring record in his first full season in the Premier League, in the UEFA Champions League he’s been the top scorer in 2 separate editions of the competition won a treble won PFA player of the season and UEFA Men’s player of the season. After his exploits last season he’s been among the front runners to win the Ballon dor this year and I hope he wins it not only this year but many more in the long run he is that good and I wish people stop finding ways to discredit him saying nonsense like he only scores tap ins and he’s only good because he’s on Manchester City these are narratives you cannot make on Erling Haaland anymore.

Off topic but I think Haaland and Verstappen (from F1) are so incredibly similar.... Both seem very cold and calm to the general public, almost like there is no emotion at all. Both don't care about records and stuff and dislike the media. Both are actually great personalities with a great sense of humor and very humble. Both live and breath their sport.

It's great to see a real 9 play to his strengths, he's a great talent and I think there is no need for comparisons despite what the social media and "press" try to instigate. Let's enjoy football for the beautiful sport it is, and appreciate every talent out there taking part in the spectacle, be it Haaland, Mbappe, Messi or Ronaldo. On a less emotional statement I think we should never say someone should have less recognition for doing their job, a 9 that scores is not less deserving of recognition than a great full back that runs the whole pitch or an attacking midfielder that plays jogo bonito.

Haaland is the most interesting player I've seen in a while, because as many have pointed out he isn't dribbling like Neymar or doing anything flashy, but he's taking almost every chance he gets in front of goal and just buries it in. His finishing is absolutely insane, positioning better than any 9 in recent memory, athleticism to reach those imposible balls to many strikers, it's just crazy to see people slandering him because if it was as easy to score those 50 goals at city then maybe Jesus, Aguero and sterling would've had a couple balon d'ors wouldn't they? Either way, we'll just have to see if Messi getting a WC and making a great display will be enough to take it from the lad. There's always another year for Haaland, but I'd hope it's rather earlier than later.

I think you downplayed Messi's season although Haaland had a season that will be remembered for eternity. Messi actually has 2 more g/a than haaland (64 compared to 62), while doing a whole lot more on the ball.(twice the successful dribbles, chances created, key passes, etc). he didnt "just" win the world cup, he was the captain behind the wheel and had the biggest role in winning it. Haaland hasnt proven himself in the big games yet (he is still so young), while Messi has been better. Haaland will need around 2 more seasons to truly become a beast, but Messi is the beast right now

Don't forget he is also a small game player. Has gone missing in every final he has played in. EVERY final. He is not a dribbler, he is not a playmaker, he is not looked upon to make assists. the best argument against Haaland winning the treble is the fact that he didn't score any any of the three finals he won. But even that it faulty, because he's such a massive threat that the effort required to shut him down creates massive amounts of his space for teammates

Social media ruined football. A lot of these youngsters watch football on social media. They focus more on trolling players than actually giving credit because that's how you get clicks and impressions in this day and age. They also grew up in an era where the proper 9 had been extinct until the emergence of Erling Haaland and that's why they don't understand the essence of a pure goal poacher. Haaland would be 2x appreciated if he played in the 90s to mid 2000s.

Haaland is a GOAT in the making. He's the modern standard in terms of a #9. I never understand when people say he's just a tapin merchant, besides no one else being able to do what he did last season, goals are LITERALLY the point of the game. Also, even if he doesnt score or misses chances, he's presence plays a huge role in drawing defenders and creating space for other teammates to shine. He's a cheat code from any angle
