The strategic choice of an orange cap to balance out those pecs is very smart. Equal distractions on the top and bottom of the frame = focus averages out to the face.

Brooooooo i've watched a few of Ermin's sim racing videos on youtube before and i was like "wait a sec... i know that guy" you're telling me the guy who made me crack up at his BeamNG videos is the same guy who mastered some of the best sounding metal records out there? And now he's doing a video with Kohle? Dude, my worlds are colliding and it's cool as hell!

In regards to relying too much on meters... That is a great point. It becomes a ridiculous rabbit hole when you start watching lufs, dbr, rms, and true peak and trying to juggle them all at the same time while trying to keep the audio impactful. At some point, it just seems like something individuals push in order to overcomplicate things so many will just give up and hire them instead. Just look at all of this information in older recordings you love. If you were mixing and mastering it, with the usual approach of watching meters, would it had come out the same? The answer is likely no. And he says it best.... "The listener doesn't care." That's important. Some metal genres, and their mixes included, seem to be music made for engineers or "virtuoso's." Making music for the tiny minority of people will keep your reach very small. Simple is better. No one was sitting there in the old days saying, "Man, I like this song but this song needed more scale runs. That little clip has ruined it completely for me. I'm getting a refund on this." Death Magnetic, an example of what was wrong with the loudness wars, was mostly only criticized by people that know production. The listener didn't give a damn. So anything under that crazy bar, if the music is good, will be fine. The quest for perfection takes you in circles.

What a great video! I especially like the part about monitoring speakers - I also never understood what help it should be to listen to so many different sources. I lsiten in a small, but heavily treated room (non environment room concept) with a system linear down to 20Hz. While the room itself doesn't sound any natural (and I understand if someone don't want to work in such an environment the whole day) - the mixes and masters translate very well, the best listening situation I ever had.

Ermin's approach to Mastering is in line with what is a modern concept of utilizing plugins (in the box). Of course, communication is always the key that fails most. However, that also means there is an immature interpretation from wannabes that have not mastered the concept literally. So from my perspective, Ermin opens the eye to the future of what Mastering will be like.

Yes. I have always regarded a good mastering to be 50% mix consultation and good communication.
@guydude4124

The point of using different references is to go somewhere and see if there is some specific thing you're missing ... like if you have way too much low end you might hear that in your car if your room isnt perfect.
@KohleAudioKult
@KohleAudioKult Жыл бұрын
If it's just about the low end cars do actually work, but you could also just use a good pair of headphones. The point is: The less you need to walk around between different systems the better! Most of the time this is rather confusing than helpful. Better invest in making your main monitoring system as good as possible.

I still need to figure out how to mix my music properly first. However I will definitely grab this course cause i really enjoy how those bands he has worked with sound and its the direction I want to head my own music to sound so this was a great find for me. Do you got any DAW specific courses on mixing for metal as well? I am currently learning how to use Studio One version 6 professional with stock plugins.

The true peak advice seems weird to me, I understand that Ermin doesn't shove out masters at 3db over 0dbfs but it sounds like he wouldn't notice if he did. It's pretty easy just to set most limiters to -1dbfs true peak in a few seconds these days, not sure I understand how that takes away my energy. I understand the concept of not wasting time on getting perfect lufs and using meters but clipping due to codecs pushing above zero is definitely a thing you hear it all over soundcloud mixes and EDM where they limited to 0. The rest of the advice is awesome!

I'm not sure he's saying limit to zero? It's just much more important for film and TV etc

I personally wanna know wtf their gonna do with all the aliasing going on in their Flatline plugin? And why it's the exact same algorithm as Gclip, and Freeclip except for the oversampling? Which almost makes matters worse. And on a clipper, oversampling is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING! I've done my own tests with Plugin Doctor and other plugins, which I trust 100%, and they concur with what this guy (link down below) found on the aliasing issue. The other issue is quite interesting as well. I have yet to fact check on that though, to be clear. But it wouldn't Suprise me one bit. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bppzo8icnMrWmX0.html

Finally, somebody had the guts to say this! "Standards that ultimately don't mean anything" - Ermin, Some really great insights here! I do POST-mastering with a series of tools that (unless you stole them off my primary server) -you don't have. And do you know what my AI "thinks" about "industry protocol"? It doesn't care. So, is AI-centric post mastering going to make a difference (other than buzz-word value)? Let your own ears decide: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ob2jhK1musDMlqc.html
