As much as I love Dan I think his mixing is a bit dated. Producers like Zakk Cervini (Bad Omens, Bring Me The Horizon) are way more relevant but he doesn't have any mixing tutorials anywhere on KZfaq. The producer who's mastered that sound though and literally his mixes are equally good is Nick Mavromatis. He also break downs a lot of Mick Gordon's trick on synths and guitars. You can listen to his work on bands like October Ends. You'll find all of his tutorials here on KZfaq.

Dan has no doubt done an amazing job producing and arranging this but I agree the final mix doesn't sound very good when I compare it to the bands you mentioned.

@@minotrax8492 100% agree with wanting to really see a new I Prevail one. I watched the bless the fall one and I thought it would be this insane thing. Just basic stuff that anyone would do. His ear is just incredible, though. Same with Zakk Cervini, Tyler Smyth and Wzrd bld. Best in the game, imo. I doubt his approach would be that different but who knows. Let me know if you come across anything like that. Cheers!

@@mattelder4269 Yeah no problem, I think that between the years he had to learn some very interesting techniques and it's getting along well. For me Tyler has the best sound quality in modern metal, especially with the last I prevail album that came out for me it finished me off haha. I was able to get Tyler on instagram though but it's pretty rare and I know he still uses Helix native for his guitars but I think he does it in a different way.

I completely agree with you brother! I believe he’s referring to studio production in terms of producing exceptional audio quality perhaps. Which in theory is different from song writing. I’m writing and recording on my “mobile rig”, where everything in my whole setup is pretty budget based. Even using one guitar cable that came with one of my Ibanez’s…😂 not because I prefer it, but because life Happened and I’ve had to start over many times. Point being, if you have the know how, you can mix great music as long as you know what you’re doing and why. A good producer/engineer would be able to make a squire strat sound like a high end Jackson…but he can’t make a shitty guitarist play like a good one. It’s all in the hands, mostly. Not debating what anyone was saying, just expressing how gear really isn’t that important. A good producer could make a quality recording in any environment with almost any type of equipment.

That song sounds dope! I don’t know the benefit of using 5 or 6 different compressors on a single track ? Maybe the different compressors have some colors to them, but under the hood every compressor and even multiband compressors does the same thing: it’s a volume driven automatic fader. There is no magic or more than one way to do that. In a few books I read about engineering they all said not to compress one signal more than once in the mix. Later in the mastering there will be a final compression/limiting on the track or the master. So, I was told not to compress more than two times in total. It’s the same with other tools. Normally one would use one or two rooms for reverb and one or two EQs and no more than one overdrive/distortion for guitar. All some interesting stuff though. Good video!

This is a good example of how to NOT mix your songs. Honestly I listened to that song when it came out, and the only part that sounded good was the synths intro. Honestly not being hateful at all, I was like how bands with such big budgets and big Spotify numbers have such bad production. And the main reason I was upset about it was because I really like Caskets. Sorry to say all of that, just being totally honest and I don't think this guy should be teaching other people how to mix.

Not sure about taking a masterclass from the guy who produced the last three Bury Tomorrow albums. Honestly? I hope The Seventh Sun is the last with Dan. I hoped Black Flame (their first with him) would be their last with him. How three of the worst produced / mastered albums in modern metal come from this one producer is baffling to me. Especially when unassociated companies could come out and say anything he does could be confused with mastery. Enter Shikari lost 90% of what made them interesting and Dan not only gets praise for those albums but critical recognition. Not from reviewers overly familiar with their back catalogue, mind you. Or reviewers who even remotely enjoyed what made Enter Shikari a popular band in the first place.
