Many years ago, I recorded an orchestral piece, but had no idea about the composer. When I discovered it was 'Whytehorne Shadow' by E.J. Moeran, I dived into the deep end and got most of his compositions with CD's by Naxos and Chandos. What a wonderful composer, such fine 'English' music, and a tune and melody all his own!

What a marvellous piece of British orchestral writing! The "Tema Con Variazione" is alone worth the price of admission but the two Allegros acting as a frame are remarkable in their combination of busy, positive dynamism and poignant yearning. Hickox was a fine conductor, sadly missed....

When I first heard this work, it just blew me away....and still does. One of my very favourite composers. I first heard the Theme and Variations as background music on one of the 1960's 'Bird's Eye View' series of helicopter flights around Britain that were narrated by John Betjeman. It took me many years to track down what the music was.

Beautiful, pensive and energetic music written by one of the great British pentagram sorcerers. An ever-growing "working list" to me includes: Parry, Elgar, Charles Villiers Stanford, Walton, Bax, Delius, Ireland, Britten, Arnold, Alwyn, Howells, RVW, Harty, Finzi, Bliss, Bantock, Coleridge-Taylor, Bridge, Butterworth, Warlock, Moeran, Berkeley, Tippett, ... ?

Great list. Though not a Brit, if you like these composers you really ought to check out Portuguese composer Joly Braga Santos, esp. symphonies 1-4, (2&4 are masterpieces especially) divertimento #1 for chamber orchestra and his Symphonic Overture #3, which are amazing works that exist very comfortably in the "sound world" of these lush, melodic, modal/impressionistic Brits you listed.

@@bobbengan Hello Bob Bengan, thanks for the comment and recommendation on Braga Santos ! I agree with your assessment: those four Symphonies are wonderful. Some show the influence of composers such as RVW. I've yet to listen to the other orchestral works you mentioned. I recently discovered yet another British composer of sublime, pastoral music (a short work by Jeffries @ AntPDC's channel kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtqXo9qYrNO0nnk.html). Best !

@@hectorbarrionuevo6034 If you don't know his work I recommend the music of English composer John Scott. Tons of his work is on my KZfaq page. His Guitar Concerto, Antony & Cleopatra, Greystoke Symphony, Odyssey of the Belem, Harem, Shooting Party Suite etc. will be right up your ally. He's one of the last living British composers who writes music in that vein you and I seem to love. Don't let the fact that his music is mostly for film disuade you. It's sumptuous, melodically brilliant and orchestrationally fantastic musicianship of the highest order. No one alive is writing music like this anymore really...

i enjoyed this so much i listen to it every time i am in the car on a long journey the timps in the 2nd movement- 2nd variation were a little quiet and i feel that given more of a whack could have made a greater affect but it is a great peace of work and i congratulate all involved.
