[From "Kovacs Corner" on KZfaq.com] - Percy Dovetonsils offers more poetic incantations. This time the title is "Ode to a Book Worm". Percy's martini is flavored with an unexpected ingredient...courtesy of the NBC stagehands!

Today's poets can't hold a candle to Percy Dovetonsils.

You could buy those glasses at any toy or novelty store back when Ernie did this bit. My dad bought me a pair of them when our family went to The Boardwalk on vacation. And, trust me, I wasn't the only kid --- or kid-at-heart, of any age --- who was wearing them. Silly fun. Wish I still had them. I miss those days. I miss Ernie's show. Ah, nostalgia. RIP, darling Ernie, and thanx so very much for the magic, music, and memories. Thanx muchly, Kovacs Corner, for sharing this little treasure! Looking forward to more, and more, please please pretty please with a cherry on top?

That's funny! I've only just heard of Percy Dovetonsils (or Ernie Kovacs for that matter) but those glasses are hilarious. I'd like to have a pair myself!

@@MyPalJimbo 😊👍 You are apparently in luck, my Friend! I just Googled 'novelty glasses with eyes', and some listed as being through amazon, Oriental Trading Company, and even Walmart, look pretty much like good ol' Percy's. Maybe not exactly a match, but reallllly close. Enjoy! Also, be sure to check out some of Ernie's movies. He was a pretty good actor. (edit for typo)

Everything about Percy Dovetonsils positively screams "dated gay sterotype" (and surely there's a dash of Tennessee Williams in him) yet Kovacs is so very sweet that I've never found the character offensive.

The fish that was slipped into Percy's martini reminds me of a similar story. Kovacs was doing his Hungarian chef bit, which required him to drink copiously throughout the sketch. What he didn't realize until he took that first swig was that someone had substituted real liquor for the prop stuff. It's said a small reaction appeared in his eye as he paused slightly to glance at the amused crew before resuming the sketch. He downed several glasses as scripted and made it through the performance, but was pretty well bladdered as he signed off. Live tv had its moments.

Was it the skit when he drowned the chicken in wine and scotch whiskey and drank everything from the bowl at the end as cook Miklos Molnár? The skit that's uploaded here on youtube?

I think this was done a little too early in the morning for Ernie. Yet I need agree with those who find him not the least offensive; he simply didn't have that streak in him, or perhaps he was just too busy being creative to be motivated by meanness. I commend Kovacsland, a biography of him by Diana Rico.

In the 1950's , this character was considered comic exaggeration. Today, real individuals who look and sound like this are in school teaching your kid's gym class.
