I work as a Swedish teacher and the issue that I have with Rivstart is that the grammar explanations are usually very incomplete and over simplified. As a teacher you have to have a lot of grammatical knowledge to really be able to supplement the explanations of the books. I can imagine this must make it more difficult to study on your own. As for the C1-books, I find that the book Språkporten is a bit more interesting as it's more focused on Swedish culture, whereas Rivstart is very focused on literature.

I know that having a teacher would be ideal but for those of us who don’t have that option what book would you recommend for a beginner speaker?

@@euroesc5013 Unfortunately there are no complete grammar books in Swedish. They are all overly simplified in my experience. Rivstart is the "best" option. I have a KZfaq channel where I put up videos with more in depth grammar explanations so if you want you can use those videos to supplement the teachings from the book. Go to my playlists and you´ll see everything organized by level. :)

For English-Speaking A1 learners I recommend the book series Swedish: The Basics by Laura A. Wideburg over the Rivstart textbook.

Awesome review, thank you so much! I found another Rivstart book called Yrkesliv but it looks like it is aimed toward German speakers who are learning Swedish.

Thank you for this! I just started learning Swedish. I am taking a A1 course right now but maybe when I advance I'll get a Rivstart textbook.

Hej Hej.. I am learning Swedish. I’m running into an issue where I pronounce “G” and “J” from my throat like in Dutch, so far nobody has corrected me but I notice that no natives talk like that

Bengt Hällgren's From English to Swedish 1: A Basic Swedish Textbook for English Speaking Students has an actual story, good grammar, and it kept me self learning. You should check it out, det är bra !
