Today Luke is reviewing the Ghillie Kettle 1L Stove!
….
Link : www.woodcookstove.com/ghillie...
Price : $104.00
Sizes : .5l, 1l, 1.5l
Weight : 2lbs 3oz
Whistle :
Boil Time : 1 Liter of water in Roughly 6 minutes depending on the overall quality of your materials. Drier the better!
It has been said that The Kelly Kettle was patterned after the Ghillie Kettle, which was a Scottish invention from the 1800s. The original kettles were made of copper.
Grills’n Ovens LLC distributes Ghillie in the U.S. from its Woodcookstove.com site. The company offers the kettles in three sizes, with 0.5-, 1-, and 1.5-liter models. They start at $84.
Silver Anodised Aluminium Ghillie Camping Kettles
chimney-shaped kettle with an integrated wood stove at the bottom
These units are nicknamed “Irish volcano kettles.” Indeed, they can erupt with fire at the top. Smoke belches out before the flames shoot high.
The Ghillie Kettle has produced camping kettles for centuries and at Ghillie Kettle they're still handmade in the age old traditional way. These wood burning camping kettles are made in England and are trusted companions of thousands of adventurers around the world. The Ghillie Kettle is ideal for camping, fishing, hiking, bushcraft, and any outdoor activity. Boil water in just 4 minutes! Can be used in harsh conditions, even when wet and windy. It is quick, durable and simple to use with no need for gas or artificial fuel: use twigs, fir cones, and dry leaves.
Whistle is connected to the kettle so that you and can use it to pour the water
Be careful as it can be very hot.
The Irish "Volcano" Kettle Made in UK by Ghillie.
A self-contained wood fired kettle with a whistle!
Silver anodising provides extra protection: in addition to being scratch resistant the kettle is easier to clean and has all of the benefits of stainless steel but is cheaper and much lighter. It also has a smooth non-stick, non-reactive surface and is quicker to boil, heat food, and clean. The kettle is guaranteed for 10 years, subject to normal wear and tear Boil approximately 3.5 mugs of water in minutes
Ghillie's silver anodised kettles are available in 3 sizes and 6 configurations:
1) 1L The Explorer: approximately 3.5 mugs of water
Specs: 0.8kg Height: 11" Diameter at widest point: 7.3"

** You can purchase each kettle individually or with a "Cook Kit". The Kit includes: a frying pan, saucepan, grill, pot gripper, base stand and pot support.
The Ghillie Kettle Company is an old brand, having produced its namesake products since the 1800s. Decades of use have proven the design, which shined in our testing.
Since the fire is contained within the kettle, it is protect from the wind.
This stove takes advantage of rising heat and it’s a lot of fun to use.
There are all sorts of attachments and addons which you can order.
Angle the hole towards the wind to assist with a quick burn.
Once you have the kettle filled with water, make sure not to overfill as it will causes issues when the water begins to boil
For the best results with this stove, feed from the top as well as the bottom. Small pieces of wood that will burn quickly in the bottom and larger items drop from the top. This provides a good balance of the two

Pros :
It's basically a double-walled boiler with a chimney and is remarkably simple in its operation.
Fun to use. Everyone of my friends who has used this has enjoyed using it.
Smart design.
The whistle is a great touch compared to other kettles on the market
Free fuel
Easy and mindless to use
Burns to ash
Tip : For best performance from this stove, break your sticks and twigs into small pieces
Cons :
Large awkward size. Takes up a substantial amount of space in your pack.
With that being the case, this might not be your go to kettle for backpacking. Car camping, bush craft, fishing, kayaking, hunting, definitely.
It’s quick but it’s not fast. You could boil water quicker in a fuel stove.
Heavy
If you’ve been through a long period of rain and everything is soaked, it will be problematic to use.
It’s only for boiling water unless you purchase additional products.

The Kelly kettle came first in fact in the 1890s, which is the original design from Ireland. The Ghillie kettle was first manufactured in 1929 in England from a design by New Zealander John Ahley Heart. The design was almost identical to the Kelly so was probably largely copied or inspired from the Kelly. The original Kelly was however made from tin plate and the first Ghillie from copper both later moving to spun Aluminium and now stainless Steel option in the case of Kelly.

Kelly claim this but can’t prove it. They didn’t start making them until the 1950s. The Sirram registered design was 1928, the Thermette patent is 1929, over 25 years before the Kelly Kettle started being manufactured. Kelly don’t have any patents or photos predating the 1950s.

My parents bought a "Sirram Volcano Kettle" for their 1955 honeymoon drive around South Africa. I discovered it as a youngster and it then boiled my water for 15 years on surf trips and then whitewater trips around the world. It eventually died on the Kali Gandaki River in Nepal, 1997. Was perfect for a whitewater kayak as it didn't need to be kept dry and would boil 1.5l water in under 5 minutes, even with wet kindling.

I have the large Kelly Kettle in stainless. It is pretty large and heavy, but it rocks when you have a group (especially in the winter) that needs hot water. You can keep reloading it and boil a gallon of water in twenty minutes using only wood scraps for fuel. It is also useful in getting a campfire started in wet condition. Just start the fire in the bowl with small items and use the embers to get your larger fire going. It's hard to justify toting that thing most of the time, but watching the volcano in the dark is quite a show. Thanks again for your videos!

I went with the kelly kettle trekker model, it holds 0.6 liter of water and weighs less than a kg, small enough for the pack and big enough for one person. Kelly kettle was founded in the late 1800's and the ghillie came after. Good style system

Great for a base camp or if you are going to be stationary for several days camping in a cabin tent, or perhaps a cabin in the woods. It's different. I like it for those applications. It looks like something my grandfather would have used. Cool review Luke. Thanks!

I have had mine for a couple years now and love it. I got the anodized aluminum with the cook set. I like how you can heat water for coffee and cook a meal. It is definitely not a backpacking cook system. They do have a smaller unit but I have not tried it. My issue is living in wildfire country I have to check for red flag warnings before I go out. When there is a Red Flag warning you are only allowed to cook with propane or charcoal. I have tried charcoal with it but it is really slow at heating water and just takes too long. I take my smaller propane stove in place of it.

These are made in Redditch, England just a stones throw from me. The only reason I've not bought one (although I have used them many times) is the bulk. Most of my outing are solo missions in the mountains for which these are too big and heavy, but I, at still get myself one for base camp use as they excel at what they do. I look forward to seeing your review of the cook set that goes with it.

You know, it's big and bulky but I like the way this kettle looks and acts. I don't go out solo much anymore so I often have adults, kids and grand kids around. So I not only need a bit more water when making things but I'm sure they'd get a kick of the whistle. I might have to save up some pennies, nickles and dimes for one of these. Good review! I like it!

Very cool. I agree it is definitely not for backpackers since It weighs as much as my stainless coffee cup & 24oz cook pot, mini stove, 2 fuel canisters and silverware all nested in my cook set pouch. It Would be good for base camp. Very functional, I like the whistling cap too. Would be nice if there was a much smaller version. Thanks for sharing

The Kelly is better value for the money, as stated bellow it was the first the rest are copys. The scout is 0.6 lt/steel/has a whistle/costs £45. It can be purchased with extras which make it more flexible stand for the top of kettle allowing you to cook on the top, a cup/plate/pan & a separate cooker & more. Cost £76 ($95 approx) +P&P

This isn’t true. Although Kelly Kettle claim this was invented by them in the 1890s they simply cant prove it. No photos, no patents, no sales, no company. They started manufacturing them in the 1950s by which time the Thermette and Sirram keetles had already been manufactured for over 30 years and used in WW2. Additionally Kelly Kettles are now cheap and chinese made, whilst the Ghillie Kettle is still made in the UK. The Ghillie kettle is cheaper and they also make all the accessories you mention.

I have a small size stainless grill (found it) about 30 cm by 30 cm (12" by 12") and I put my stainless can ( ($4 and it's large) with lid, on top of the grill and I make a fire under the grill - it's supported by 4 rocks (I find those when I need them). I can boil water for tea/coffee and make meals in the can. Why would I spend $104 on a Ghillie Kettle?? Also, I can carry water easy in my large can (like a bucket) and when I move on, I shove my fire-lighting kit in the large can.

I find it odd that you recommend this stove, when it is very much like the biolite stove in terms of size and not being multifunctional. I had a Kelly kettle (some thief needed it more then I did) and I now have a biolite stove and kettle. Neither one would be my favorite stove, however both are good for quading or car camping.
