I got the Base camp Kelly kettle and all the equipment to it. And i love it! I use it on a weekly basis. First off, you're making a big mistake by keeping the cap in while using it, always, ALWAYS! take the orange cap out when you use it. Second, never fill it up more then 2/3 up, or else the water boils out of it.

hey Nut,, just something I carry with me is a piece of clear tubing about .500 O.D.like 2 feet long,, for blowing on fire.. you don't have to kiss the ground to blow on your fire, and its far more comfortable.. rolls up and packs easily and weighs practically nothing….can also be used in first aid situations. and for syphoning liquids if need be…hope this helps,,, keep up the good work on the vids….

I bought the Hobo Stove attachment last year for my 3 year old KK and now I don't pack UL anymore. I go slow & easy and the 4lb 4oz of the SS Base Camp Kit w/Hobo is worth every pound. That and my Sawyer (Squeeze) water filters are indispensable. Great Review Nutnfancy

Another upside, if your water filtration system has a problem, you can purify your drinking water with quick boiling. 1 minute of boil will wipe out virtually all viruses and bacteria below 6500 feet. 3 minutes of boil time will get the job done above 6500

Love my KKs. Look into thermos cooking. A KK is great combined with a small big mouth food thermos. You may need to preheat the thermos. Boil water, mix dried ingredients and boiling water in the thermos. Walk another half hour, and the food is done.

Hi NutnFancy, I've had a KK "Base Camp" model for about 4 years now and Love it! I make coffee for everybody when we're camping; I use the KK to boil the water, and a French press camping mug. I use coarsely ground coffee. Green Mountain sells good-sized insulated French presses for camping. I am everybody's hero in the morning! It's also nice to have hot water around for taking a "bird bath"! Thanks, Lee

awesome review, this looks a great system and something I could easily use myself. Thanks for talking about your views on stainless steel over aluminium as it is something I would have contemplated also. Thanks for showing the wood chopping that great knife, using the log to bang down on the other end is not something I've done before but will definitely remember that. I have arthritis and it's actually hard to put pressure on certain things like that were I'd normally just use my palm, so great tip. And the use of the glove for fire stoking is well worth the investment. I can see this being a present for many people in my family who will never have ever seen it, thanks :)

I had my Kelly Kettle out for its maiden voyage last weekend and had very similar results. I have the LG Base Camp in aluminum and found that it boils water like nobody's business, but lacks somewhat when trying to cook with a pan. I realize however that I mismatched what I attempted to cook with the setup I chose. The Kelly Kettle (in terms of cooking) is suited for dehydrated meals, rice, oatmeal, etc. and not the bacon and eggs that I attempted. It's a welcome addition to my camping gear!

You can also fit a trangia burner into the firepot and get better performance with the Kelly kettle than with the trangia alone or the tangia in the sweedish mess kit. I've done this a number of times and if you are careful with your alcohol fill you can boil the water and the fire will be out when you are done.

I purchased and used A basecamp model this summer in Colorado. I took it about 25 miles and over the divide twice in six days. It worked great for boiling water. I did have some problems finding dry fuel for it (it rained every day). I purchased it for car camping and emergency use but had to try it out backpacking. A+ for boiling water Did not even buy the cook kit. Steve

Got one (base camp size) in the house and one in the truck to get home on. Local cabinet shop is happy to have me come up and clean up his offcuts so I get plenty of hardwood fuel to cut to lunchbox length. Boils water in moments but will boil out the spout. Mine have the cork spout cover which must be out to use. Is the silicone stopper vented?

I like the big basecamp model. It's perfect for wilderness camp sites (car to park, hike in) where you don't have far to walk, and it allows you to have a small fire at dusk into twilight without having to gather 25 armfulls of wood. Great equipment, invented for a reason. Don't get me wrong, I never go willingly into the wilderness without a cartridge, or alcohol stove system, but the kelly kettle is just too cool. A marvel of human ingenuity.

Hey Nutn, since the kelly kettle is basically a specialized rocket stove, this subject transfers nicely into related gear that I think is worth pursuing: general purpose rocket stoves for long-term emergency cooking capability. Grover, Silver fire, Stovetec and Deadwood, all come to mind as starting points.

how can you even compare a burner with something like this? the burner is useless when you run out of fuel. this kettle can be used INDEFINITELY. that alone means it is in a completely different category. this is survival gear. the burner is camping/hiking gear.

Toxically Masculine Yes fuel cans will run out but they light so much easier and more reliably. When you are cold and your hands are numb, the rain is falling and dry wood fuel is at a premium, a fuel can stove may literally save your life.

Dumb question: Just out of curiosity, if you set the base of a Kelly Kettle onto a steady, solid fireplace grate, with the chimney flue opened-up, so that the smoke could escape upwards, safely out of the house, could a person boil-up water inside a house, as opposed to having to take it outside onto the patio, porch, or driveway, to boil? Even though the tiny cooking pan and holder is, admittedly, kind of silly, people who only need to whip up some instant coffee or a meal in a pouch need it.

Love my kettle. Didn't like the bag that it come with so I built a multifunction carrying base that I posted 3 videos on. The kettle gets a 10 but the bag got 0. Only problem with kettle is not enough accessories available unless you make your own. That isn't much problem though, I have the ability to make anything I need. As for the aluminum rivet problem, not much of a problem if one will spend a few bucks on a rivet gun and new rivets. I did stop storing water in mine but I keep plenty other water containers on hand.

I love the kettle, but the fire base is crap. if you're getting that much soot and tar build up its not getting enough oxygen through those tiny air holes. look to the emberlit to see it done right. thinking about it now, I wonder how well the kettle would fit on my emberlit... it would be a lot taller and more top heavy, but would burn cleaner, hotter, and need less fuel.

One thing I like about this system is that it has built in emergency survival potential. If lost or stranded in the wild a good efficient system for boiling water can be a life saver. Boil water to purify it for drinking as well as keep you warm. Using sticks for fuel could make a huge difference compared to a fuel canister if help is far away or took a long time to find you. Most people lost in the wild die from dehydration or exposure and this helps to prevent both.

I like the KK a lot, but I will not use aluminum to cook with, so I did the stainless steel version which is way too heavy. They are supposed to be making a titanium version, but have yet to do that. Still, I hate how bulky it is. For bicycle camping it is useless unless you use a trailer. Great video though....
