I think because they were both tactically inclined, but Erwin was clearly his superior in that way: thus the intimidation on a mental level.

If you’re Reiner at that time you don’t know that Eren really is a distraction, you just know that Erwin is making Eren look like a distraction. Reiner has no tactical choice besides to act against Eren and figure out Erwin’s longer term strategy on the fly because of Eren isn’t actually a distraction they could lose instantly.

Erwin had the most balls of anyone. Despite all of the pain he went through, all the adversity, he still charged into battle, with no regret and no fear every time.

Ppl that want erwin back dont understand 2 things, one they're apart from the half that dont put themself in the MCs shoes which logically doesnt make sense to me, and two the ending may not be becoming so grim if erwin lived, and apparently Isayama wants his fans to get chronic depression so 💀
