Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I actually enjoy the longer videos! Hanging right in there with ya, bud! I loved seeing the older, beautiful homes! It was my dream when I was younger to buy an older home & furnish it with items in the era it was built. Only thing, it would've had to have a wrap-around porch or at least a very large one I could put rocking chairs & hang plants on. But, unfortunately, that dream was gone when I turned 39 & disabled. Im 62 now (til September!) & try not to think of things I didn't get to accomplish. I did see the usual Dollar General store in this video! And that food! Good grief, you made an old woman hungry at nearly 3 in the morning! That looked so delicious! I'm not even gonna think about that elephant. Bet PETA had a fit over that happening! Good thing they weren't around in those days! Enjoyed the walk, too. My son & I used to go for walks in the snow...it was always so beautiful, especially at night. I used to love walking in the rain too, sometimes with or without an umbrella! Before our road was paved, we had a clay dirt road. When it rained, my niece thats 2 yrs younger than me, would get out & walk up & down the road, squishing the clay mud between our toes & usually getting soaking wet! Mama let us do this as long as it wasn't storming. Then she'd have us come to the back porch, rinse our feet off with water pumped from the cistern, took off our wet things, wrapped us in blankets til we dried, then dress us in dry clothes. Oh how I miss those simple pleasurable days! I could see me now trying to walk in clay mud with my walker...I'd end up face down & mud on more than my feet! Your videos bring back so many good memories for me! Thank you so much! Hopefully someday I'll be able to send you a donation. You just don't know what a help you are to me! But, I missed that singing again, you know "the party's over"?! God bless you, my friend, & keep these great videos coming!

Well I don't know if you will see this comment but I just ran across this video and it brought me back to my childhood. I was born in the old Erwin hospital in 1958. I grew up on Spivey mountain just south of Erwin but still in Unicoi co. I've not been thru Erwin in a very long time and it almost looks the same as when I grew up there. I graduated from the old UCHS high school and spent many days roaming the streets of Erwin during my teenage years. as old as I am, I still miss this place and wish I could move back there. You almost made it to Evergreen cemetery where most of my family was laid to rest. Watching the video was just like riding in the car with you. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for a good job.

Ah, *my* type of country where you visited! in the 1980s, I lived for a few years with my sister in North Carolina and she taught at ETSU and she would travel up Laurel valley over the 3500 foot mountain pass and travel through Erwin. I would go with her at least once a week. Then she died and I had to spend many months in Johnson City doing estate work on her property. This was many years ago, Erwin and Johnson city has changed over the years. over 30 years, in fact. Looks prosperous. People tell me that Johnson City is doing well. I have many memories of riding and walking around these mountains. A five-mile map length road can be 15 miles over yonder as the road snakes and curves, why they do not waste a curve sign unless that curve is over 180 degrees of a turn!

The version of the elephant story that I heard way back in the day was that it was hung from a train trellis in Scott County. It’s amazing how stories get twisted.

A menagerie of animals from Sparks Circus paraded through the small town of Kingsport, Tenn., just a few miles from the Virginia border. The show's star attraction, a five-ton Asian elephant named Mary, suddenly stopped. She had noticed a pile of watermelon rinds and veered off course for a snack. Riding on Mary's back was a new trainer, a man who had been a hotel bellhop just a few days before, struck Mary in the head with a large metal hook. In an instant, the elephant wrapped her trunk around the man and threw him into a drink stand. As the story goes, she then stepped on his head in front of a crowd of shocked onlookers.

Ah, another frequent destination in my "road" days, Shane. I always enjoyed going down there, especially stopping off at the original Clarence's in Unicoi (that burned down in 2017). I didn't know they had moved to the original Wendy's in Erwin though - it's been a few years since I've been down that way. That's AWESOME news - the original Clarence's was such a cornerstone of the community, it was heartbreaking to see it burning on the news that night... just a great ending to what could have been a tragic story, right there. (By the way, the gravy n biscuits were ridiculously good - sorry, Mama, but they were!) Let's see, other memories of Erwin... A few things jump to mind. The Nuclear Fuels joint down there, of course, with all the good and bad it represents (not getting into it - nor will I ever walk into the joint again in this life). Georgia Pacific. Red Wing's historic factory there. White's Fresh Foods (the first store they ever opened in 1969, down at the south end, is still open as an IGA now). Some will remember the sound effect of the "bob white bird" as their radio ad moniker... Erwin always fascinated me, such an enigmatic sort of place - and of course, by the time I was rolling through there in the 90's, a lot of the visible means of support for the town had eroded, leaving a stranger to wonder just what folks did for a living there sometimes... Finally... I need to fuss a bit here: ENOUGH with the freaking elephant story already, sheesh. A town so steeped in rich history as Erwin doesn't deserve that as their calling card; that's just lazy to keep referring back to that when there's SO much more to talk about. I mean come on, Rogersville has a similar story about hanging a pachyderm - but would anyone want that to be their hometown's main claim to fame? Rock on and stay safe out there, my friend. -Ed on the Ridge

I was logged into the wrong account on my laptop, sorry that I missed comments until now. Getting old stinks lol. Clarence's in Unicoi was a frequent stop for me and my ex-wife, great memories there. Yeah, I have a lot of friends in Erwin and they are alllllll sick of the elephant story. I still consider it more of a Kingsport story anyway but I am alone in that thought apparently lol

Erwin is located at the base of cherokee.national forest and you can travel east on I26 and be up at flag pond exit near the nc/ va border at over 3,000 feet in elevation. It gets cold in late fall up until early March. Back in my high school days I remember my volunteer high school from church hill,tn going over to erwin to play them in baseball. During the game snow flurries were coming down.

the nuclear plant so hidden away! I was amazed over how many secret things are hidden in these mountains, secrets known only to a few people. Like "Ebenezer Bible University". back then, in the 1986 period, their sign at the bottom of the road leading up the small mountain looked like a hand painted sign made by a Bible thumping retired preacher. the reality is....the building houses a full University for grad students. masters and Phd degrees only. It is the grad school for the college across the valley!
