Most of the things I create with my 3D printers are practical items. They're devices designed to be used. They help me with photography, video or day-to-day tasks. Normally I print these with PETG, but Eryone reached out to me to ask if I'd like to try their new PLA+ filament. So, I said sure, why not?
I have to say, I'm pretty impressed. It prints just as easily as regular PLA but the parts generally seem more durable and less brittle. It'll almost certainly be replacing regular PLA for me for prototyping and test-fitting parts, and it might even be able to replace PETG for some of the final pieces I want to print.

Thank you for taking the time to produce this. Will be creeping your channel and picking your brain while I wait for my amazon order of new thermistor to arrive! In my experience, PLA+ prints much better than PLA... At least with my slicer settings and printer. But it's not yet useful for many functional builds. Still using PETG for functional prints

My gosh dude, your prints come out so amazinging. I'm not to far behind you though! It's definitely a huge learning curve with the snapmaker2.0 but dialing in the printer and getting the settings juuuust right on cura and this machine really makes great peace's. My next step is to do the "calibration" they talk about on the forum and putting sounds damping foam in the enclosure. Eather way great job with the prints, keep it up!
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Christopher. Yeah, dialling in Cura (or whatever slicer you happen to be using) definitely is the key to getting good prints. On the SM2, there's two things to calibrate when it comes to filament... First up, the extruder, to make sure it's pushing through the amount of filament the printer thinks it is, and then Linear Advance - this stops some of those gaps and blobs as the printer speeds up and slows down on corners and direction changes. I think maybe this should be a topic for another video, haha. :)

I use PLA, PLA+ and PETG from eryone and love all three materials. I can not say which one is better because I print functional parts the most time and I choose the material depending on purpose and stress of the part. Each material has it's own advantage and disadvantage but I love using eryone filament. They have a lot of promotions and sale events so the price is great for the quality.

@@JohnAldred I am gong to order some right now! Oh, FYI, I have found that one thing to be aware of with their silk filaments, is that they do absorb moisture more quickly then other filaments. If you have a roll exposed to the air, you may need to dry it out perhaps once a month. Even in a relatively dry environment like where I live.

Little tip, turn on z hop to prevent the nozzle hitting parts and pulling them off.
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've used z-hop plenty where required. As a general rule, printers shouldn't need z-hop enabled and having it enabled will add a massive amount of time to your prints. And it certainly shouldn't be needed with a Benchy. But the Snapmaker 2 isn't the best at cooling, so overhangs will start to lift. Even with z-hop on it's not always going to solve the issue. All it does is put pressure on the raised part and push it off the bed anyway in those instances. It also wasn't the problem in this case. :)

Does anyone have any experience using ST-PLA? I recently bought ST-PLA from CCTREE and while it can print the sample models from Ender 3 just fine (cat & dog), in fact it's so strong that you can't even pop off the rafts, it has major stringing issues and I have a really tough time finding the right settings for it. Any help would be appreciated.

The biggest downside for pla or PLA plus is the temperature transition point.. I can’t have it melt in my car.. PETG is that perfect balance but I wish it wasn’t so glossy
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 2 жыл бұрын
It can be a downside, but not always. Temperature resistance isn't always a need. When it is, though, yup, I'd still go the PETG route. :)

@@JohnAldredI agree with that.. I print end user parts (150 spools of PETG last year) and I just don’t know if they are going to put it in there car so I print everything PETG or ASA.. I wish PETG wasn’t so high gloss!

I am hoping to test some of those in the future (I want to compare a bunch of different types of filament), but I just need to come up with some good and consistent test conditions (and I'll probably need to build machines, haha). But, it's definitely coming at some point. :)

I've had issues with eSun PLA+, especially with stringing and temps higher than 205 on Ender 3v2. Always acts as if 'wet' though I've dried it a few times with Sunlu S1+ at 47c for 9 hours with desiccant inside. Hadn't dealt with plain PLA other than the bit that came with the printer.
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the eSun, but it seems that every manufacturer is different when it comes to PLA+. It basically just means "PLA with additives" but differnet manufacturers use different additives and none of them publish what those additives are. So, every brand is different. :(

Excellent results and a good demonstration, but I found myself intrigued by the map in the background. It's very odd with the thick red line on the eastern edge of the Atlantic that puts Iceland on the European side but runs right through Ireland and the northwest tip of Spain and includes the Canary Islands but not the Azores. It then follows the African coast exactly. On the rest of the map, some countries are shaded in various ways, but some seems as empty of color as the oceans--European Russia, for instance, and Sudan. Do you know anything about the map?

love eryone PLA, but damn my curved wall prints dont have consistent walls. Cant tell if its a bad bad, a setting or printer issue
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 жыл бұрын
It's possibly the model or the slicer. Most curves are really made up as lots of flat sides, and sometimes that can show through on the print if the flat bits are a little long.

It's where it lays down the filament in different directions. Monotonic ordering solves it, but Cura didn't do that at the time I made this video. I think Prusa Slicer implemented it first, but they didn't have it when I made the video, either.

What about heat resistance compared to regular PLA?
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 жыл бұрын
Well, I couldn't get it to really extrude and print well below 220° which is about 10-20° higher than I usually print PLA. But other than that, I'm not sure. I don't think it would survive boiling water without distorting, but I haven't tested personally.

What do you think about PLA+ vs ABS?
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 жыл бұрын
I really couldn't say. I discounted using ABS a few years ago when I discovered PETG. ABS just doesn't really bring me any useful benefits - especially for the amount of hassle involved in printing with it. I've still got a roll of black ABS sitting under my desk unopened that's been there for about three years now, haha.

Anecdotal evidence of a bit tougher than this doesn't really mean anything. Unless you have some sort of a test rig and some data there's no claims to be made here. Build up a test rig like the German or the Spanish guys! come one! Where's the swinging hammer machines and hydraulic presses??
