In this video I am testing Eryone filaments from mechanical strength aspect. PLA vs PLA+ vs PETG, which is best for 3D printing different mechanical parts. This is a comparison test, but I will try to keep these tests as some kind of standard, so they are comparable with each other.

Dr. Gaspar, I truly appreciate your testing approach, you’ve saved me so much time and filament. I’ve recently had a lot of fun printing and testing roller bearings, some have even been used in functional parts. I’d love to see your evaluation of the popular designs, and how material selection affects performance. Thanks for your work!

Nice testing, and I really appreciate the effort, but it's not a full picture and I still think PETG is not given enough credit. While PLA is OK for some decorative prints I think PETG should be the first material of choice for some functional prints because of it's great layer adhesion (one of the main weaknesses of FDM printing). Being water and UV resistant the PETG is also a great material for outdoor use.

This is where i'm struggling with the results of this video. I'm not saying anything is incorrect, just not sure what to think. While I did not do any real tests, my pla+ prints seem to be much stronger than PLA. To the point where I don't want to use regular PLA for much.

@@rickybobbyracing9106 PLA+ Performance can vary from brand to brand, there is no set recipe or definition what what makes PLA+ as such, your mileage may vary. My personal fav. is the eSUN PLA+ filament particularly because of the higher elasticity. In the end the best course of action is to decide on filament based on your own needs and tests.

Great video, I am glad I found your channel. This is really valuable info. There is so much talk about differences in materials that you have to sit down and really test the assumptions. You are showing there is no magic. I wonder about the consistency of material from spool to spool. I learned early that dimensional stability over time for PLA was fairly low. Pieces I printed a year ago will have loosened up due to long-term shrinkage. I learned to temper my expectations of engineering tight tolerances. I am just now trying the higher temp materials.

I think this video is very good and you have done a fair test with some nice equipment to give an accurate result So thank you for putting a lot of hard work to show us the advantages and dis advantages from these filaments. I was thinking of trying PETG but I can say from this testing that it would not benefit fit me. I Can say after many years from moving away from PLA to PLA + I can clearly say PLA + is my favourite for making functional parts for proto typing before 3d printing in metal. Also I can say Parts are made very accurate and can be printed with less supports and doing it so reduces the clean up

I really liked your double shear test. You might consider a cross screw to set and hold the gap for each test. I suspect that some of your deviation was caused by the varying gap in the plates as the test started. A simple upgrade to the twisting test might be to use a t handle instead of a ratchet to avoid bending movements. You could also add a bubble level to the t handle to monitor your motion. Nice work, it looks like you are having fun with this.
@MyTechFun

Thank you for all the effort you put into your videos. I use Eryone PLA+ quite often. Not related to this video, but what do you do to keep your prints stuck to the Prusa Textured Sheet? I don't trust my textured sheet for prints longer than 1-2 hours because a corner or area will always detach and effect the print. Thanks!
@MyTechFun

In most cases, textured is for PETG and smooth for PLA. Sometimes I am lazy, and left textured for PLA. In that case, clean with IPA when it is cold. And pay attention to live-Z, if it doesn't stick good, you may need to lower it.

Hi Igor. I would really like to see you test and compare different brands of PETG for their heat resistance and for their strength, etc. And it would be awesome if you could include Geeetech PETG, because that's the one that I always use since I started using PETG. The thing is, I don't really know if the Geeetech brand one is really the best suited for my applications, and I can't find good information, especially about the cheaper brands, like Esun, Eryone, Geeetech, etc., so a comparison of these would be great to have. Do you think the PLA was annealing while it was softening? It would make sense that PLA+ would have things to inhibit crystalline growth (crystals are usually a little more brittle). It would explain why it started to deflect and then slowed down.

Esun has so many good materials, but what I'm sure is that PETG is mostly harder (elongation) material than PLA+ (better with higher temperatures and higher UV levels)(but anyway leaving the elongation, PLA+ is overall fine). Your video is super, probably comparing it with other brands, could be better (PLA+ is different than Esun, and probably, Eryone has a not so good PETG). Greets!

@@MyTechFun it's relatively new, within the past year. It's from Sandoz. I ordered a couple spools by accident but have been playing with it a bit. It's supposedly solves the warping issues with ABS and is easier to print, while being stronger and higher heat resistance than PLA. I'll admit I'm new to 3d printing so I wouldn't know how to compare it as I pretty much started with PLA-F instead of PLA. Aside from some weird stringing, it seems to be as advertised. Stringing could just be my own inexperience too
