Erythropoietin (EPO) increases the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
EPO causes RBC hyperplasia (increase in number).
Many athletes inject (abuse) EPO in order to improve performance.

Erythropoietin levels are low in cases of polycythemia vera (negative feedback mechanism)
Erythropoietin levels are high in cases of appropriate erythrocytosis (due to hypoxia), and in cases of inappropriate polycythemia (due to EPO-secreting tumors such as renal cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma).

Would this help the conditioning of competitive athletes like TJ Dillashaw Due to the additional red blood cell production , would explain his insane cardio despite having lots of muscles which need supplying with oxygen .Typically the athletes with more muscle mass have cardio problems because of this ?

To my knowledge though all anabolic-androgenic steroids promote high production levels of red blood cells. Why then is EPO even needed / why is poor cardio stereotypically associated with muscular development? It makes sense that the body produces more red blood cells as your muscles grow because it knows it is going to develop greater oxygen demand as its mass increases, especially in metabolically hungry tissue like muscle. So why does is any EPO needed?
