I think we all know about and admire Napoleon's incredible capacity for work, his attention to detail, his energy, his determination and never-ending faith in his own ability. After his disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812, Napoleon returned to Paris in December and he got to work almost immediately: his work to rebuild the army started the day after his arrival. Napoleon did not have the luxury of time, as he had, for example, in the 2 years when his Grande Armee had trained in the Camp de Boulogne. His army had to be rebuilt from scratch: staff organisation, transport services, the organisation of the new army units from the smallest of brigades to the largest corps d'armee, while the cavalry and artillery arms of the Grande Armee had virtually ceased to exist. But his torrent of activity virtually ecompassed all of France, as Caulaincourt noted: "The entire French nation overlooked his reverses and vied with one another in displaying zeal and devotion." His task appeared daunting to every mortal, but Napoleon countered with an impressive goal of his own: 600.000 more men were to fill the ranks. By January 1813 there were more than 100.000 Frenchmen who were being called up (137.000), and more manpower would be brought from calling up classes of recruits from previous years, 40.000 men from Spain, 80.000 men of the National Guard, 13.000 Marines, and by the passing of more conscription laws, which enabled Napoleon to call up 100.000 more men. Eventually, Napoleon didn't manage to gather 600.000 men, but the 400.000 that he managed to find was no mean achievement, though the rebuilding of the cavalry took him longer. And even though his conscripts were young and lacking in experience, they sure performed incredibly well under the Emperor's command in the first phase of the 1813 campaign, many of them actually receiving their muskets a few days before the renewal of hostilities: in the battles of Lutzen and Bautzen the barely experienced French recruits had to fight against well trained Prussians, and Russians who were battle-hardened by the horrors of the previous year's war in Russia, and managed to bring their Emperor more victories. This is all credit to Napoleon's incredible personality which enabled him to miraculously overcome his reverse of fortunes in Russia and meant that he would be able to fight for the fate of his Empire against a Coalition of Nations that was getting stronger and stronger as each day passed on. Incredible music! I will forever be happy to listen Epic History's tracks, amazing job as always!
