Hi Marie Claire! The escape attempt probably hastened the closure as it was the most expensive prison to run in the US at the time and attempts to repair the damage from the salt Air exposure were regarded as futile. So whilst not the sole reason for the closure, it could be argued to be the final straw.

This is very loosely based on a real life escape attempt from Alcatraz. One of the 4 was delayed and got left behind but it is possible that 3 managed to escape on a handmade raft and wearing handmade life jackets

Its now reckoned that they may well have survived the river and escaped. The last thing you would do after a successful attempt is to then let everyone know of your escape- coz you would most likely be recaptured. Many theorise they got out of the country to start new lives. Certainly, no bodies were ever found. Alcatraz was closed when the United States began a move to more `liberal` Law & Order policies in the changing political environment of the mid to late 1960s.
