I wonder if there's a backstory for each of the major characters here, because there's _so_ much we don't know. I would also like to know how the USA went from being the land of the free to a pseudo-fascist nightmare as well as how New York went down the toilet to the point where it became the country's only prison.

@Robert Douglass I remember some expanded media in the early 2000's about Snake Plizkin in a comic series and there was a sequel Escape from LA in 97, but that's all I know. Maybe there's more out there because you're right. There's so much back story there when we come into this movie that would be fascinating to expand on.

Kurt Russell is my all-time favorite actor. His characters are timeless, and he's just "the man" plain and simple. We were all hoping that Kurt's son, Wyatt Russell would be the new Snake Plissken for the rumored reboot, but I hear that it is dead in the water at this time; and YES you are correct, Snake Plissken was the inspiration for Solid Snake/Big Boss. As a matter of fact, in MGS2:SOL Snake uses the code name Iroquois (Snake) Plissken.

Yes, Harry Dean Stanton was in "Christine" amd "Alien". He also had a cameo in "The Avengers" as the security guard that finds The Hulk/Bruce when he crashes into the ground naked. Ernest Borgnine (Cabbie) is also in the film "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972) which has an all star cast. The president is Donald Pleasence probably best known as Dr. Loomis from the Halloween films. As far as many knowing who Snake was and thinking he was dead, John Wayne had a movie “Big Jake” where throughout the movie a lot of characters especially bad guys would comment they thought he was dead when he told them who he was, I’m thinking this is a nod to that classic especially because the plot of it was Big Jake was sent to rescue his grandson by his estranged wife from the bad guys who were holding him for ransom, great western

The novelization based on the Screenplay explains everything: WWIII broke out in 1985, as Russia launched a sneak attack against the US, destroying every city on the East coast, except for New York and Washington. In 1988, the crime rate in thr US rises 400%, then in 1991, New York was turned into a maximum security prison. Snake Plissken, a Special Forces operative, goes on several rescue missions and is declared a hero, but all rhis changed after the Russians launched a deadly nerve gas, killing his friends and family in the Midwest, and the effects of the gas causes him to lose an eye. In 1991, he becomes a famous outlaw and the rest is history.

Hi Laurenn! I highly recommend some of Carpenter's earlier movies: "Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)" & "Someone's Watching Me! (1978)" Both are very interesting & dark. Also, as someone already mentioned "The Fog (1980)" is a very good Carpenter movie too.

Assault on Precinct 13 doesn't get enough attention and needs some (any?!) reactions to it. Like Escape from New York it handles issues of societal decay/collapse with a relatively light touch whilst being incredibly entertaining, and occasionally very funny.

@@chrisjackson5210 It's a harsh remake of the Howard Hawks film, "Rio Bravo", starring John Wayne and Dean Martin (should have been Oscar nominated for his performance).

@@Madbandit77 Yeah, I'm afraid I really struggle with watching either of those performers in anything and find them both pretty insufferable. I must make myself sit down and try watching something with either of them in as I guess there's something I'm missing... p.s. I've seen John Ford's The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance etc. which are good films but I just can't stand Wayne - what's the appeal?

First Metal Gear game was from 1987.. Metal Gear Solid was the 3rd game...and yeah. Solid Snake was a lift from here. Kojima is a movie geek. Also, on the original NES box art for Metal Gear 1, Solid Snake, sans eyepatch.... is just Michael Behin as Reese from Terminator in his Future War gear.

Brain was in Christine and Maggie was in The Fog. John Carpenter liked to stick with certain actors and actresses just like Tim Burton.

Per John Carpenter, in the gladiator scene, Ox Baker came close to really bashing Kurt Russell in the ring until Kurt popped him in the groin and told him to dial it down.

Two fun facts about this film: John Carpenter was forced to re-write the bridge chase scene at the end. For a long time in Hollywood it was illegal to cast Ernest Borgnine in a film and not kill his character off, so Carpenter killed off Cabbie to avoid a mandatory three months in prison and lifetime ban from the directors guild............................Jamie Lee Curtis is in Escape From New York. Another fun fact: One of the two facts is true, the other is pure BS. 😁
