Why do retired people want large homes for when the kids come home? I live in the USA and still live in my large family home and my kids don’t ever stay here. They go home to sleep. Having a large home is too difficult to maintain when you are older.

I agree with you but an older person once said to me' although immediate family gets smaller as you age, your extended family gets larger'. She also mentioned the longer you live the more 'stuff' you accumulate (not in a hoarder way just in a 'life is long' way). I hadn't thought of it like that. It's nice if you can host your kids' families when they visit but you're spot on about the upkeep.

I live in a huge house but I have a live in housekeeper who works for me part time. I spent most of my life in this house and the kids and grandkids stay here a lot.

We had a neighbor like this. She was retired and bought a HUGE house with many bedrooms for her kids and grandkids to come stay. In the 10 years we were her neighbors, they never came to spend the night. I guess it's a dream or hope, but for many not a reality. Depends on the family I guess.

Like the house I bought. The older couple bought it thinking the grand kids would come to stay. They never did (they wanted to do their own things elsewhere) so they sold it. Too many think they are living in some family tv series where everyone comes over every weekend and play happy families. Once the children marry and have families and friends of their own from what I’ve seen it’s rare they come to stay. My partner and I have already discussed that when we hit 70 (we are late 50’s now) we will sell and move into a villa unit as a garden this big that we have will be two much to maintain.

I’m almost 73 and looking to buy a small cottage in the country. Why I would want a big house with stairs and large garden is nuts! Unlike so many of the couples claiming they want to downsize, I really do! ☺️☺️

So lovely to hear that splendid English spoken by the elderly gentleman at the Cathedral. That's the English I would have loved to speak.

I loved the first house. I found it cozy. I don’t know why anyone needs a big home when they are downsizing. That round tower at the start of the show was cool…would make a great home.

I'm a pack rat. I need a house full of closets and cupboards. Either that or a warehouse in the back yard. Lol Downsizing? What's that?

This series makes a nice change from location, location location. The latter show is more about trying to find houses to renovate and move up the property ladder. I find most of them are incredibly small and overpriced. But this show really demonstrates what these communities are like and houses that you can get for very affordable budgets. Although you do have to look at the time period. This particular video was shot in 2016. I'm sure that house price has more than tripled by now. Still it makes you want to live in herefordshire. Just to be near those Castle gardens.

I'm also retired, we downsized... why do people always say they want to downsize but yet want a large home still ?

The mystery house is a good choice with the bedroom and bathroom downstairs so they can age in place if they choose too and still have plenty of space for kids and grandkids to visit in the future or even have a live in nurse or the like.

Bought a big family house, but family / children seldom came! Enjoyed it for 16 years, then sold it to downsize+ moved closer to children.

I’m not English so I’m wondering when people spend this much on a house, how much more are they paying in closing fees? I’m from another European country and I’m shocked by how much people in England pay for a property & how big they seem to want in a property. I’d be so happy with a two bed period property in a small village! England looks so green and lush. I would like to live there…but could never afford to! 😢😢

I love this show, but have a major problem with whining people. The presenters are wonderful and patient, but hard to watch whining as I find every home in every show is stunning and to go, "um", not sure - so many homeless in the world, so to me every home is a gem.

Poor Nicki you can pick 'em for sure..."you can please some of the people some of the time..." who would want to be an estate agent showing these people around, you could see your commission fly out the window, no matter how much effort you put in!! No Nicki YOU loved it, I thought the smile on that woman's face was so false.. and why would you be looking for a house until you sold your own, as it doesnt appear that you buy homes 'subject to sale of your own' or do you???answer anyone please?? Housesitting is such fun, my hubby and I house sat for 8 years (just moving from one to the other with only travel gaps in between) as we travelled around eastern Australia, ending up in Tasmania where we bought a cottage in the country of our own, but now moved back to western Aust when the grandys started arriving...those were the days!

This lady is a snob. I can confidently say that master bedroom is large for Britain. And as someone else said why do retired couples want huge gardens. Within a short time it will become harder and harder to maintain at their age. And let’s face it how often will the grandkids or kids be coming to have a lot of empty bedrooms sitting round for 3 or 4 visits a year.

What a pain in the butt couple. Downsizing means less space. Put the family into a hotel or go visit them.
