People need to know that once they have their temporary or permanent visa and travel to Mexico, once at immigration on the Mexican side they need to show the visa before their passport to be sure that they aren't entered into the system as a tourist. (If that happens, they have to return to the U.S. and begin the process all over again.)

Thanks Cartess!! You’re right, if folks are interested in living in MX, start the residency process now!! My husband and I qualified at the consulate in Arizona in December 2023 and completed the CANJE process in Merida in April 2024. We hired an immigration facilitator in Merida and it was well worth it. We’ll be heading back to Merida in March to renew for 3 years. The income requirements where we qualified in AZ was $3100/month and now it’s gone up to $4000/month. You can definitely complete the process in the US on your own but be sure to follow the consulate’s instructions to the T. I would highly recommend hiring a facilitator for the CANJE process in MX, unless you have excellent Spanish and understand legal terms, etc. Thanks again, take care!

Thank you Cartess This was much needed topic with visual instructions. Hoping all goes well for me on the 17th! I wasn’t sure what to do after I get my TempPerm residency. I didn’t realize the time frame of the Canje. Thanks again.

I tried to use the Mexican consulate in Atlanta but no one was answering the phone and I got the runaround and was told that I needed to go out of state. Luckily my wife and I had been to Mexico between 2016 and 2021 which made us eligible to aquire a temp Mexican residency in Progresso which is outside of Merida. I used a lady who owns a company who helped us. We needed to catch the ADO to Belize and acquire a 10-day stamp, let that expire, then apply for residency that way. It was worth it. We needed anything but our passport. No proof and income or anything.

There are definitely other options for those with that meet other requirements. We got ours the same way you did with the regularization program. Didn’t have to leave Mexico.

@MoveAbroadandThrive Yes, it is called the regularization program. This was much faster. The only thing is you need to have a passport stamp from 2015-2022 or something. I forget the years exactly. Also, every state is different, when we were in Playa Del Carmen they didn't offer this program which is why we had to ride the ADO bus to Merida.

You don’t have to stay 30-days in the country. It just has to be completed within 30-days of arriving in Mexico.

Just remember when hiring a MEXICAN Immigration Attorney or Facilitator...they CANNOT help you on the U.S. SIDE. YOU have to do that part FIRST. Hire the help for your trip to Mexico!!! Those folks are WORTH the money.

Gotta be able to show the income. Some consulates are strict on what they’ll want to see, but if you got the financials and proof the biz is legit, u should be okay. Can’t just go in and showing them cash app deposits jejejej. Converse about the financials when you’re requesting appointment.

You must possess an expired FMM (tourist permit). You should have visited Mexico once or twice before Dec 31st, 2022. Entries via cruises are not eligible for this program. No economic solvency is required. *However, you may be required to bring bank statements* You get a 4-year Temporary Residency. You are required to stay in Mexico until your FMM expires. For children under 18, original birth certificates with apostille or legalization and certified translations are necessary. Upfront payment of immigration fees, approximately $17,000 Pesos (around $1,000 USD), is mandatory. This does NOT include the facilitator’s fees. The process can take 1 day and up to 4 weeks
