At a safe house in China, a brother and sister collapse into each other arms. For months, 'Uncle Jung' has been trying to smuggle his sister and her family out of North Korea. Today, they crossed the Tumen river into China. "We wanted to wait for darkness but were afraid the guards would find us", explains Park Myong Kwan. "So we just jumped into the river". One risky journey may have ended for the Park family but another is just beginning. China regularly returns refugees to North Korea where they face almost certain execution. In contrast, Thailand deports immigrants to South Korea. Over the next week, the Parks will travel by any means possible to the Lao border, a journey of 4,000 miles. They don't speak Chinese and don t have any documents. "We feel like we're lying on a chopping board right now", confides Park Myong Kwan. "It's like we're gambling but the stakes are our lives". But for them, the gamble pays off. They make it to Thailand before being arrested. In a few months, they will be flown to South Korea, where they can build a new life.

Please remove this video, it is great that we outside North Korea have the right to know what goes on there and even be able to help. The problem is these videos show strategies on how people escape, if the North Korean government finds these videos they can implememt tighter control measures to keep people from escaping.

Francois Human, You are somehow right. This vedio does not help other defectors when crossing from the board compared to the past. But showing such a reality programme, million of people can be more aware of the N.K. political situation as to support those people.

Francois Human Im pretty sure that North Korea knows all the different ways people try to leave. Sure this video shows one way, but with the vast distances they travel and the size of the countries they are travelling through, it would be.like looking for a needle in a haystack for North Korea to locate anyone escaping. Most of the ones who do get caught, is usually because of their own stupidity or they become too ill or just get unlucky and get arrested.

This was filmed ages ago. Under Kim Jong Un, security has become much tighter than it was in 2007. The DPRK government is well aware people escape by crossing the Tumen River, there's no secrets revealed here...

The only way to really escape is to bribe the border guards at night. Since the guards don't get paid shit, they will absolutely accept money. They also have to keep a secret because how are you suppose to explain how these people escaped, they will be executed for doing a terrible job. So they get paid, and they shut up to keep their heads.

What about the freedom of Americans? Look at all the innocent lives Bush and Obama have killed using brainwashed American troopers. 90% of people killed by the Drone Program of Obama were innocent. 1,000,000 innocent lives were killed in Irak with the excuse of WMDs. People believe anything in the USA. Russia Gate, Nicolás Maduro is a dictaror, etc. Please pray for OUR freedom.

I was born in Denmark. Every day I am grateful that I have the opportunities I have. I can study whatever I want, for free (and I'll even get paid for it). I can go to the hospital and be treated, for free. I never have to worry about shelter or food. Life is amazing here, I am so sad that a lot of people in the world don't have the same opportunities as I do

My grandparents, aunt, mother, and their maid escaped from the behind the Iron Curtain in '47 because a family friend informed them the night before it was to happen that they were going to be arrested. I'm old now and it saddens me that people still have to run for their lives from these horrible regimes. I wish the best for this family and I pray they find the freedom and happiness all human beings deserve.

The U.S. has always helped them. Their propaganda News will say, "This is what the U.S. sent to us because they fear and mainly completely respect Kim. Of course, The NK believes every word from the News. We send them a lot of clothes. They don't have clothing stores there. Instead, They evenly trade clothes with their people. I just can't stand Kim and his fat a$$ nor trust him. I wonder how things are going to pan out betweern us and them. Yeah I don't trust Kim but I do trust Trump so I know whatever happens, He won't take any risks that would hurt the U.S. Prayer needed because those people need our help.

I actually remember seeing this documentary way back in 2007 on World's Untold Stories on CNN (with Dan Rivers serving as reporter, I think). Like a lot of recent comments, I am also curious as to the fate of the Park family and Myong Chol. But after a bit of googling around, I have simply found nothing about them beyond this documentary. The most I have is the transcript from Journeyman Pictures that put down their names: Park Myong Kwan (Mr. Park) Kwon Sun Yo (Mrs. Park) (Park?) Wun Jong (daughter) (Park?) Chol Hak (son); and Lee Myong Chol (the family friend) I could only recall that the CNN anchor noted that the Park family (and Myong Chol?) have successfully relocated to South Korea (after the documentary finished running). But take my shaky memory with a grain of salt. That said, a lot more is known about 'CK' (aka Kim Sang Hun). He was actually born in North Korea, but his family moved to South Korea before the Korean War. His adult life was spent in various postings from the United Nations, but it was only once he hit retirement age that he really started to think about projects to help North Korean defectors escape to South Korea. If this defection took place in 2007, then CK would have been around 75 at that time. He's also the first chairman of the NGO Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (founded in 2003). And according to his Korean wikipedia page he is still alive at the age of 90 (as of this writing). Something I now wonder is whether the children (Cho Hak and Wun Jong) would have attended Hangyeore Middle and High School, a school built specifically in 2006 to receive North Korean children before sending them over to South Korean schools. If so, they would have been around other North Korean children who defected either on their own or (not likely) with their parents. But something that has really hit me is how so much time has past since this documentary was made. Wun Jong, who was 23 in 2007, would now be almost 40 at this point....

@@derxert521 @Tiger Tiger China has the most sophisticated oppressive government in the world. They have a police state unlike any other on this earth, efficient and cruel. In China's northeastern providences, they track peoples faces, locations, community gatherings and more to give every citizen there a "citizen score," and if that score falls too low, they can't travel, they lose jobs, they get imprisoned. Members of the Uyghur ethnic and religious group, native to that region, are being placed into concentration (or "re-education") camps, being separated from their families, being "disappeared," etc. China has a brutal history of human rights violations and war crimes, and that history is still being written. www.nbcnews.com/news/world/uighurs-accuse-china-mass-detention-torture-landmark-complaint-n1239493

OMG.... so this is 12 years old! Has there ever been an update? I want to know how this courageous family have fared in South Korea. That poor man whose wife and child left him during the famine may not have even survived which is an awful thought and he may be better off having moved on to leave behind the thoughts which evidently tormented him. I hope the pastor is still alive and hopefully not risking his life anymore. This was such a tense situation for all and was great they managed to capture on video, things like the rivers they crossed and long train journeys because nobody can imagine the hell people will go to, to escape the Kim regime. Apparently if people go via Mongolia instead, they have to pass through desert but I’ve no idea if that is on foot, by rail or by road. People who defect are so strong. It’s disgusting that China or Laos won’t accept people seeking asylum, even if it’s a temporary measure to get them to South Korea.

I think it’s by foot, the Gobi Desert is for most part, Hot as hell, raked with a lot of dangerous wildlife and very little food or water to keep yourself from catching heat exhaustion. NK defectors don’t have any easy options to escape Rocketman’s totalitarian grip on the country. If you choose to escape by sea from the western or eastern part of NK, you’ll risk drowning, hypothermia, extreme weather and getting caught by NK patrol boats, obviously going through the DMZ is not an option as that area is heavily guarded and only NK’s elite own cars under government approval. You’ll risk getting smoked on sight. The best way is either through China or Russia and reach the S. Korean consulate but that also carries risk as both China and Russia’s immigration policy is to send all NK defectors back to the country. The family on this video took a rather much more risky route than any other option, China’s a really big country, and heavily patrolled. Thailand doesn’t share a border with China but rather with Laos and Myanmar, two countries with friendly ties to NK which makes it even more tense. Getting to Thailand would require going through the jungles of Laos which also has dangerous wildlife before you can reach the Men Kong River. Imo, fleeing NK is worse than escaping Mexico or Venezuela, it is remarkable how NK defectors manage to pull off such an escape. Knowing well that they risk death if they’re caught or while on their journey. But no matter what route they take, death is almost a guarantee to them, for them it’s just another wall but with an open crack.

Dawid Czerniak NK's too risky to attack or force to do something. It was our mistake to let them grow before but during the nuclear tensions of the Cold War they started to grow themselves. Now, attacking them means China and Russia will give us trouble and the west coast is going to get a thermonuclear warm hello from NK. It's too risky without compromising other countries whose interests in NK also make them targets, only China and/or Russia rejecting NK or a coincidental tragedy within NK will open doors for us
