Imagine if cave dweller had better ai and could flee after 10-15 sec of attacking to hide or vanish. After hiding it could attack again. That will be a lot more stressful.

funnily enough, I'm making a modpack for an smp rn and managed to achieve that effect by messing with the config. chase ends in 30 seconds, after vanishing I tuned down the spawn cooldown to 0 so it could theoretically be right around the next corner. I also capped the max cave dwellers to 1, and upped the minimum and maximum spawn times so it feels much more rare and like a unique entity that's more of a server cryptid than an active threat

The original mod arguably feels more in line with Minecraft's style, but this thing is pure nightmare fuel. If I remember, the original had the ability to randomly flee, not sure though if it does this, but I think making it flee after losing enough health would be an interesting idea. Maybe even pushing or throwing you if you try to block it with a sheild.

I love these ideas too. Honestly, I think what I was going for is this creature shouldn’t give the player the satisfaction of killing it. Just escaping to stalk you later. If anything, I would say your only way to deal with it would be barricading yourself, or using lava, though it could pull you in if you’re close enough. Also I think it should be able to break wood, but not stone or anything similar, makes mine shafts arguably less safe. And I think arrows should be an immediate aggro. Really, it would be about always putting you on edge, and making the idea of confronting this thing to always seem like a bad decision.

I think it should also be able to break blocks, but only ones that the player places down while it is active. That way, it won’t be annoying by breaking random blocks, but it will also be impossible to just barricade off.

Pretty sure the cave dweller (especially the evolved one) is exactly so horrifying because it mimics a predator in an open world where you could otherwise just vibe. More specifically, it IS a predator, and it's hunting *you.*

@@icehoofyes, but the thing with the warden is that you can scape from it or never encounter it at all, it’s an apex predator who isn’t interested in you. The cave dweller instead is actively stalking, chasing and hunting you in specific. It doesn’t matter where you are, if you are underground you aren’t safe

The cave dweller mod should be updated constantly by the community. Making it scarier and more horrific each time so it becomes that one must have horror mod. This mod has immense potential in what it does so long as it evolves every now and then.This is simply terrifying.

@@cursedhawkins1305 you're entirely misunderstanding the idea presented, he means that it should essentially be easy to access open source that people constantly tried their own hand at updating individually, think about luckyblocks and the decade of different concepts and ideas that people built off the original, imagine that but with the cave dweller.

People will view things differently than others and I lined that out exactly, allowing anyone to poke at the guts of a mod via open source just brings those differing opinions into the spotlight because what if someone DOESN'T want the mod to just be about horror and wants to add something to ease the tension, who's going to stop them if it's open source code?

@@cursedhawkins1305 The original mod would not be changed by anyone. Instead, multiple people would take the original mod's code and make their own mods with it. So you still have the classic Cave Dweller, but you'd also have a variety of interpretations made by other modders.

I see a lot of people saying they should counter shields, but if they ignore your defensive options, have higher mobility, can fit through 1 block gaps, and appear when the player has partial iron armor then we create a losing situation. Are you going to walk through the caves knowing you are going to have an near 100% chance of death? It will just become a unavoidable Creeper and it will start to be more obnoxious then scary till you start strip mining.

trying to get the best out of it :p. At some point things just grow stale which is natural. If you play the same horror game 3 times over you start understanding the pattern & well, you just know what's gonna happen. So It's only natural that horror entities also die down.

What I love about both the cave dwellers and the man from the fog is that their main sources of scaring you is through terror. Since having low visibility at night already increases stress, knowing that you have installed the mod and what it is capable of gives you that spine chilling ache that it could appear at anytime. What I would love to see by a developer is to create a monster similar to the man from the fog, but actually make the monsters use wolf pack techniques. Anyways I’m surprised you managed to live in this video. I feel sorry that you constantly have to face the looming doom and get scared to death to generate such quality content. The only thing I've noticed is it doesn't quite seem to know how to deal with shields. Maybe giving it a heavy attack that disables shields (like how axes work with Vindicators and Piglin Brutes) might help deal with that? But there would have to be some kind of trade-off, like a slower attack time or something.

what I love about this mod is that it uses terror instead of horror. It uses the feeling of being watched and the eventual attack that you either see, or dont.

I love this new version, personally, but I've had some other ideas I wish to add onto it, if you mind reading on this. For some simple starters, making it able to break dirt, cobblestone/cobbled deepslate, or other "weaker" blocks would make it more of a threat than usual, since you'd need actual stone to block it off, meaning more effort. Along with that, giving it a flee-like phase when it should disappear, or when on lower health (while maybe making it impossible to actually KILL in this case) would give it a kind of "defeated, but not gone" vibe, where you CAN fend it off, but killing it would be impossible. Couple that with other mobs being TERRIFIED of it and perhaps encountering it instead killing other mobs would lean into this "alpha predator" feeling. Couple that with a means to counter shields, and/or making it afraid of fire, would make it all the more interesting. Lemme know what you think.

I actually agree on this. Daytime is like, the ultimate safe time. You always think you're 100% safe at day and above ground, but if there was something that specifically comes for you at day, that would be more terrifying than any other possible dweller

Now I wonder if this ‘Day Dweller’ would have to have really good camouflage or a way of blending in. Since both the Dark Dwellers rely on the caves and low lighting to hide. Maybe the kind of thing where it stalks you at a distance disguised as something else. Or a normal mob. Or hiding behind forests in trees. If people are thinking of keeping the theme with ‘tall and lanky’ Dwellers, maybe a Day Dweller would have to disguise themselves as taller natural blocks. Trees and stuff. Or maybe the fact that with the Day Dweller, some new extra buildings/ruins would be there to tempt you. Sure, you’ll find some good treasure. But the more you enter, the more closer you are getting to activating the Day Dweller’s stalking. Not sure, just throwing stuff out there. I would try drawing some concept ideas if I could. But this would be my first time drawing Minecraft stuff. So might not as be amazing as what other actual mod developers have created.

@@Tenshii_Artii it would be cool if instead of just running at you and trying to kill you it could camouflage and try to lure you in with.. something? i dont know, some kind of angler fish mechanism like that. the camo could look like a patch of displaced blocks, so it looks native to the game - something you'd likely pass by with only a "huh, that's weird, a patch of random dirt above a bunch of grass" that could end up being a dweller. maybe a tree that moves ever so slightly when you look away, like a stickbug? dont know, just spitballing

Man this is spooky. Feels like the sort of monster that would mostly keep its distance when you’re at full health, but get much more aggressive if you took damage and only had a few hearts left. Something that, while a pain to fight on its own, becomes an enormous threat due to following you around and waiting until you’re fighting other mobs or trying to heal up from a fall.

Some additions I'd consider: When it takes enough damage it runs away After 2 or 3 attacks to your shield, how about it just takes it from you? It can hang upside down or on walls to watch you

The hanging off of walls is a pretty good idea it would be even more OP if it could jump down also snatching your shield with its jaw would be pretty cool and then you have to pick it back up.

It being totally nullified by a shield sort of ruins the entire horror aspect, I feel like if it was immune to shield blocks it would cause you to be so much more scared of it, and use your environment to hide from it instead of just blocking any time it attacks, which is sort of awkward and immersion breaking.

Maybe monster have to hit certain amount of times to disable shield. I don't know what is close to shield irl but there's weighted arm guards for workout. If i am trying to block something like that with shield my arms gonna give out or wrist injury eventually. SO after the monster disables shield your mc character get applied weakness and that's enough for people to panic.

I mean you can always fork the mod and make it to your liking. I would rather have shields allowed so I won't die so quick. Either that or just not deal with it at all by blocking myself in a room so it cant pass through. You don't really get anything from the cave dweller once it is defeated though so I don't get what the point is.

I played it a bit with the mod heres some things i found The sound overhaul wasn't in the mod and i was required to manually download it When i downloaded the sound overhaul the chase music would play when the cave dweller was stalking or if i was in sight with it despite it not chasing me Cave dweller would sometimes move when in sight, though this was minimal movement, so i dont think it's a bug rather a way to tease the player Other than that, the mod worked amazingly, and this really adds a new type of horror to minecraft

Also the sounds, the howling and something running somewhere you don't see. This legit got shivers running down my spine.

The Cave Dweller and Fog Dweller are the most Terrifying Mobs to come from the Minecraft Community even if they're modded into the Game. Best thing I can think of when dealing with them if you absolutely have to go into their Terf is to have either a Bow with Unbreaking III, Infinity, Flame, Punch II and Power V or a Crossbow with Mending, Unbreaking III, Multishot and Quick Charge IV along with Arrows and Arrows of Harming II or Healing II (if the Dweller Bros are Undead Mobs) as well as a Diamond or Netherite Sword with Mending, Unbreaking III, Knockback II, Looting III and Sweeping Edge III. Some Firework Rockets with Flight Duration 2 or 3 using a pair of White Firework Stars to shoot from the Crossbow would help Brighten the Place around him up a bit while also dealing a bit of damage to him. Is there a Chance of the Cave Dweller following the player up to the Surface? If so, would be possible to end up having to deal with him and the Fog Dweller in the Midst of a Level 4 Village Raid?

They should make it so cave dwellers knock shields or breaks them or something like that, it’s so anti climatic when all the build up just ends when you simply hold your shield down and avoid all its attacks

If you hadn't noticed this guy didn't avoid getting hit because of the direction the shield was in compared to the monster. So I don't get why it matters...

Here're some ideas on how to make him more scary: 1. Return to the original look. The small number of details it had compared to this one made it more unnerving and scary than this enhanced version, just like original endermen are more scary than mutant endermen. 2. Either remove his ability to climb blocks, or add an animation to it. Without animation, it doesn't look scary when it's climbing towards you from below. 3. Add the ability to "break" players' ability to block when it attacks.

this has probably been suggested many times, but this cave dweller should be able to disarm shields. if the pillar cheese was fixed, why should the player be allowed to sit in a corner and repeatedly bash the dweller's skull in with an axe while being in no danger at all? (3:33)

@@skibidibopmmmdada946 No, if you're looking for a true horror experience, then a level playing field is not what you want. There should be a way to survive, but it should not be at the cost of making the dweller powerless, instead, perhaps it can only chase for so long before it leaves and the player has to flee until its timer (whatever that is) is complete.

This is quite possible the scariest minecraft mod of all time, the way it crawls at you and all you can see is its gaping mouth and its soulless eyes… and the terrifying howls it screams while you cant even see it, hastily waiting for your ores to smelt while it screams at you in the distance… the only mod that actually scares me.

Dude... Imagine if instead of just dying like every other mob, the Dweller would instead _escape_ instead of having a normal death animation? Like imagine if it would become invincible and retreat, so that even if you do manage to beat it back, its still able to survive. It would give the feeling of it being an unkillable force while still giving the player the option to fight back and survive an encounter.
