We are all subject to getting lost in the tremendous complexity of daily life, and this can prevent us from appreciating the true source of peace and contentment within us. An proper guru can lead us out of this "forest of struggle and suffering" and teach us how to never again get lost.
A guru is one who leads you, step by step, by using the non-dual teachings of the rishis, the sages of ancient India, to discover your true nature, atma, the Self, as sat chit ananda, limitless, eternal consciousness, knowing which you can gain moksha, enlightenment.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha.org/

life reminds me of getting lost in the plot of a film .so tied up in it yet we know deep down inside its not real.its no use leaveing the forest untill we are ready as we will return.if i have to suffer to reach eventual enlightemeant then so be it.one day i was in the forest and the bluebells were out it was a friday and it was pay day .no job no money i was very depressed i could hear the roar of the motorway traffic.a light shower of rain came .i lay down on the carpet of bluebells several bees came buzzing around me then the shower released the scent of the bluebells the perfume smelt so heavenly .it then came to me how lucky i was to be in this moment .a gift from god was given to me no money could buy i went home full of great realisation of how precious free time is. for those minutes in the forest were priceless.i look on you tube at gurus .with thousands of you tube hits.if they are wealthy and covert earthly possesions.i know they are not of the truth .many cannot discern these liars cheats and thieves .to decieve millions of followers with lies and untruths is the greatest sin.a true guru knows wealth and power is not of the way of the truth

Should I be striving to meet a teacher? I live far from the large cities where it seems most Vedanta Society organizations set up shop. Beyond the great teachings you and other teachers provide via KZfaq, there are no local resources and certainly no teachers. What other alternatives are available? I meditate daily and immerse myself in the Upanishads/Bhagavad Gita/Brahma Sutras/Ashtavakra Gita and your videos, but I understand why I shouldn’t be doing this alone. Do you have recommendations for connecting with a teacher via the internet or phone? Or shall I pack up and move to New York? I’d be grateful for any suggestions.

It isn't possible for a vast majority of us to be living in or very close to an ashram. The solution is to participate in retreats, learn the practices, do them at home on a regular basis, and to again participate in retreats to refresh oneself. A life away from cities is already so much more conducive for spiritual growth. So, you are lucky in that department I think!

Just keep in mind that whenever you get out of the forest there is neither self nor forest. All you can see is a bunch of sentient beings. You realize there is a consciousness that connects all of them. You try to tell them that all their suffering comes from not realizing this. Next thing you know, you're stuck in the forest looking for a way out.

@Atomic419

@@mv8908 Thank you for your reply. Are you familiar with the Advaitic analogy of the rope and the snake? There is an important reason I bring this up. There’s more to it than this but here’s the gist... (Forgive me if you’re already familiar). Basically you’re walking down a dark street and suddenly you see a poisonous snake coiled up right in front of you, blocking your path. The snake causes you to feel tremendous fear and other negative emotions. Maybe even confusion as to what to do given a deadly snake is blocking your path. Anyway, you get the idea... Suddenly, in the midst of your fear and confusion, somebody turns the street lights on. Darkness is replaced with light, and immediately you see clearly and realize that what you thought was a dangerous snake was actually just a harmless rope the entire time! This is a deep metaphor about the nature of reality, as it illustrates the truth of superimposition. It also establishes the cause of superimposition (Ignorance) and its removal (knowledge). -Dark night = ignorance -Light coming on = knowledge -Mistaking a rope for a snake = superimposition (Superimposition means that we falsely project onto one thing, qualities of something else. Another way to say it is that we project that which is false onto that which is real.) -Someone that turns the lights on = Guru The very reason we falsely perceive reality to be dual (Dvaita) when reality is actually non-dual (advaita) is for the same reason one would see a snake when in reality all that exists is a rope. This error is due to superimposition, and the cause of this superimposition is ignorance (darkness). It is the guru which brings us out of the darkness of ignorance by giving us the light of knowledge. So that was kind of long but the whole point is this... How is it even possible that we could again see a snake once we know it’s a rope? Same thing here, how is it possible we could again see reality as dual, when superimposition has been removed and we clearly perceive reality as non-dual? Another way to put it is as I had asked before, how can we be “forever free” but at the same time risk “falling back into samsara?” I’m not sure how familiar you are with advaita Vedanta, which is the path of knowledge, but what do you think?
@mv8908
@mv8908 3 жыл бұрын
@@Atomic419 I believe is because the ultimately reality is either so dull and boring or so inneffable and we aren't able to cope with it as humans, that we or them create these little games. Which nirvana-samsara are just part of. They could be real (made up by that what it is) or imaginary (made up by humans). The wheel of existence is certainly there. We transmigrate from body to body like you would change of couch if you were to live in a heaven of couches. Each life trying to attain something different but no matter how long or short you sit down you can never feel comfortable in the long run. So this ultimately reality just is... Playing all the games but never feeling comfortable with any explanation: what am I? A question with no answer forever asked. Spirituality is then a coping mechanism for the self. How long is a heaven a heaven until it becomes a hell? Without samsara there would be no nirvana. All part of a unity fragmented in Duality and then fractalized. We therefore become imperfect because being perfect is such a bore.
@Atomic419
@Atomic419 3 жыл бұрын
@@mv8908 I appreciate your response and for sharing what you believe. However, advaita vedanta is not a path of belief or opinion, but a path of knowledge (Jnana). Sometimes the best answer we can give to a question we are unsure of is, "I don't know." On the path of knowledge, saying "I don't know" is better than giving an opinion based on belief. My question specifically relates to SUPERIMPOSITION. If you are unfamiliar with superimposition, it means you are largely unfamiliar with advaita vedanta. That in no way is an insult towards you. It's just that again, advaita is a path of knowledge and knowledge is not opinion or belief. To acquire this knowledge is a long process that includes study of the scriptures, learning from qualified teachers (guru), and sadhana (spiritual practices/disciplines). Have you studied vedantic scriptures? This is absolutely essential on the path of knowledge. These scriptures include: -Bhagavad Gita -10 Mukhya (major) Upanishads -Brahma Sutras (Vedanta Sutras) All schools of vedanta study these texts. However, advaita is a non-dual school of vedanta and so it's important we read these scriptures from a non-dual point of view. Most all advaitic interpretations include the commentary of Adi Shankaracharya. So again, thank you for your response. I hope you've taken no offense to what I've said as that is not my intent. If you want to learn more about superimposition (which is what my actual question is based on), look into the rope and snake analogy. This analogy will come up again and again in your study of vedanta as it drives home the point of superimposition. Superimposition is not "belief" or "opinion" but a truth to understand, and only when understood, does it become knowledge.

This is the first video of yours which is disappointing. Primarily because you seem to suggest there is a particular 'course' which leads one out of the forest, and that this course is also demanding and time consuming and the process possibly laborious. Yet, transcendence is not a laborious thing, it isn't a thing which one can discover only by following a particular set of teachings or instruction. It is rather, something which already exists inside each of us, and the process to reconnect to the collective conscience is one of deconstruction, rather than having to follow and learn the teachings of a particular scripture or teacher....Is it not possible (likely?) that leaving the forest is not dependent on a single set of scriptures, map, or methodology ? "You have to keep up, you cannot fall behind" . I don't know about that....is not such a search allowed to succeed on the basis of one's own pace of discovery or transcendence ? Is this a race of some sort ? Who determines whether one is 'a qualified student' ? Does this mean the poor, unfortunate 'unqualified' folk (in the teacher's or religions' eyes) are destined to remain lost ? So is there additional 'work' to be performed to 'become' qualified ? There's a problem with this sort of message. When people frame the search and discovery in such a way, it implies a certain exclusivity, which is IMHO an egoic element. So there is an exclusive, egoic element to your message here, methinks. Personally, it does not seem to me to be the Path. To rediscover what is already yours ? What you already are ? Doesn't seem to me many or any prerequisites are required; also seems to me there are many methodologies which can achieve this - and it is more a matter of finding the teacher or guide who most resonates with you, personally. Lastly, and again bafflingly, you suggest that you can find yourself lost in the forest again after you have been 'guided' out. Truly ? If this actually happens, methinks you were never actually guided out....and your guru, was false. Because the guiding out IS the transcendence, the discovery of the collective consciousness, the acknowledgment of your true, timeless self. One this is arrived at, or unveiled, or discovered, or rediscovered...the power of the forest is forever changed...diminished....observed and experienced in a different way. The forest never holds such sway over us, again. Because it is experienced now...for what it truly is. (Unless what you intended to communicate is the initial realization of the path out, as opposed to having navigated the path out (?) Unlcear.... So...as I said, your message here...I am torn; it is a bit disappointing to me. It seems 'off'. Thank you.
