Well, this was a fun day.
In March, the City of San Diego holds its annual Spring Cleanup Event at Qualcomm Stadium. Residents of the city pay for services like this in their taxes or utility bills, allowing free entry for all city residents. With 7 Environmental Services trucks all parked in the stadium's lot, we thought it would be interesting to gain permission from the event supervisors, and watch various bulky items be crushed by the Pak-Mor rear loaders throughout the morning.
I was pleased to see that scrap metal and yard waste were directed to separate packers for eventual recycling, while the others handled general waste. Also, a box truck was present for hazardous waste and other things prohibited from the landfills...and a rolloff bin housed all the appliances that people brought to this event.
One of the coolest happenings of the day (go to 5:10) was seeing an older truck in the Pak-Mor rear load fleet, from the late 90s / early 2000s order. This could be the last of those trucks in the fleet today, and it probably takes an event like this for one of those to be brought back out and put to work. But work she did--that truck did just as well as the newer ones, from my observation.
Thanks for watching in HD, might add that watching at 2x speed makes the video go at a more reasonable rate.......Thanks to the drivers for chatting with us and being cool with the video...Y'all are appreciated.

The ominous sound of pack-mors packing at the same exact time, what a sight! Nice job on this one!

It's cool to see these lighter duty bodies swallow all that bulk without too much trouble. Consider my fancy thoroughly tickled.

Love these bulk videos. So much fun to watch, just nonstop packing and you did an incredible job capturing that. Really cool atmosphere too, just trucks lined up in a lot packing away. Definitely would be cool to be able to see some of these trucks unload, especially the scrap metal one. Just a giant, tangled, heap of metal pops out haha. Really loved that older Pak-Mor too. Really enjoyed this post, hope to see a part two haha

I've probably watched this video well over 5 times since you've published this! My favorite truck was around the 13:40 mark....Savannah, GA once had CCC Leaches (1998-1999 and year 2000 New Way King Cobras models I think) and they sounded exactly like that! Best sounding truck out of them all in my opinion!

Flawless choice for a first clip, showing them all lined up and engines revving, but I thought there would've been a heap more cars and residents present. Clearly noise isn't an issue in the area with the adjacent highway traffic :D Love all the crushing and destruction of furniture! The Pak-Mors have their own touch with clean-up due to the slower slide gradually biting down into the doomed items. I love the long boards and stuff like at 3:12 which quickly flick upwards as soon as the blade crunches into them... a top way to get knocked out if you're an inexperienced worker hehe Good to see the scrap metal truck getting loaded with all the good stuff..... hopefully the yard waste doesn't follow the general into the local landfill, like you've told me is the case in Escondido lol Awesome to see these RLs doing more than the usual residential work. How many of these Pak-Mors does SD run roughly? Must be a close ratio of RL to SL in the city eh?

+MitchellM15 "Good quality" organics generated in SD go to be made into actual compost. The only green waste ESD would send to the dump is poorer quality stuff like palm fronds and other fibrous plant matter that takes forever to break down. Really not too many people brought green waste at all though, since most can just set it out at the curb. Btw lower turnout at this even than the Fall one usually gets, according to the workers we spoke with. I guess they've had cleanup events before with a line of cars going back a mile lol I'd say ~20 Pak-Mors on normal routes each day, roughly. Not even close, without consulting pics of the yard I can say there are probably twice as many ASLs as RLs... seems like few residences in SD city actually make yard waste (a small chunk probably chuck it in with the trash since the default size black cart is pretty large). The ones that do often just have one or two cans set out, and on top of that the two-man crews just haul ass. On top of THAT there are a good number of automated greens routes as well

Wow that's very cool! Way more convenient than making a trip out to the landfill. I've never seen an RL pack metal items before, so this was very cool. Definitely showed the strength of an RL. 3:15 was awesome with the doors flying up lol The old Pak-Mor sounded real good! Really liked 7:44 where you could see the blade crush the cabinet up close. On a little side note, is Miramar Landfill owned by the City of San Diego too? Awesome video, never really been into RLs too much compared to ASL and FL, but this video definitely kept me entertained the whole time!

Awesome video! Really can't wait for part two. What Christian said, about the scrap metal unload lol... that's gotta be fun to watch. How'd you end up filming this, with 7 trucks lol? Just hop back and forth from each one? Just curious; great job

Why do most of these trucks not have tippers? Are they reserved for only events like this where a tipper isn't necessary?
@Trashman242
@Trashman242 9 жыл бұрын
+trashmonster26 correct. this whole crew and group of trucks does the bi-annual cleanup events and regular curbside ones in different neighborhoods around the city. Alley cleanups too, I believe.

was curious how do the guys know when their truck is full is there a gauge or something that tells them
@Trashman242
@Trashman242 9 жыл бұрын
there's a moving wall called an "ejector blade" that's the same height as the truck body, mounted inside. It's hydraulically powered and will slowly slide forward as the more trash is packed in. So when that ejector blade is all the way forward (right behind the cab), you can tell it's full.

***** The packer will really start to labor as well,those last few shots that truck definitely looked to be packed out as it was really packing slowly. Man they really gotta watch out for flying debris as those plastic chair legs really went FLYING outa the hopper like boomerangs once the blade hit it.

Any truck packing what looked like scrap metal was designated for just that, and the material goes to a recycling facility....not the landfill.

They brought out two older ones this time, both for scrap metal. It was kind of sad because they were beating on the trucks so hard.
