Not all of the garbage trucks that take to the streets of New York City collect everyday waste as one might think. Construction happens around the clock there, particularly in Manhattan, so an armada of packer trucks is dispatched to gather just the debris from these job sites. But the waste from grand-scale demolition and remodeling projects must be handled differently from normal trash. 1) Construction debris is heavier in weight (think: concrete, rock, steel, carpet, wood, tile, etc.), demanding the hauling equipment to be built to higher standards. 2) The city's Department of Sanitation estimated that 33,000 tons of C&D waste are collected daily. With no nearby landfills, the waste (which includes dirt/fill) must be recycled or put to new use as much as possible.
Suffice it to say that New York has a rich history when it comes to private refuse haulers, whose industry is still lucrative. NYC permits over 1000 businesses to haul construction waste (alone!) in the city. (For a list of them, see: www.nyc.gov/htm...) With the ever-different collection methods, the heavy duty nature of the work, and much vintage equipment to be found, it was well worth the trip I took with infamous George (georgewuzheer) to the Big Apple in June of this year. Biggest thanks to him for coordinating with haulers, optimizing our use of public transit, and making this a success.
In the summer, this industry's drivers, laborers, and craftsmen work well into the evening. The work is physically taxing and always dangerous; so let this video be a tribute to more than just the equipment that removes construction debris, but the men and women who prepare/handle it. We appreciate how receptive they all were to being on camera.
Now, have just a small look at the fruits of our success!

The driver operating the "Allgone" Autocar is damn good, notice he shifts without using the clutch. Ahh sweet memories!! Operating in Manhatten during the day takes nerves of steel, and then you have to deal with the dummies oblivious to their surroundings, walking by while wood and such flies out from under the blade. The Loadmaster LM (As seen in the "Allgone scenes) series is the best for C&D work. Notice how the sling lift used in conjunction with the overhead winch allows him to dump the minis perfectly.

I always enjoy how these demolition companies keep their trucks in tip top shape, definitely adds to the video. That one truck had a pretty interesting tipper/winch setup, looks like it works pretty well! Amazing sound on that last truck, really enjoyed the riding part. Amazing video!

I hauled demolition waste in Chicago. Sometimes a 30 yard rolloff would only have 2000 pounds in it, a packer truck would have made much more sense.

despite all the old buildings needing renovation across big cities in the US, it seems like NYC is the only place that uses tiny dumpsters and packer trucks for so much C&D waste. the system really shines where there's limited street parking and for interior demolition projects

Wow, I knew there were a lot of C&D haulers in NYC, but 1,000 really surprises me. Love seeing the Queens County guys use the winch for bulky items. Naturally, oblivious pedestrians try and pass by as splinters fly haha. Love that lifter on the Castle truck, and it just looks amazing. Loving AllGone's 2RII as well. Hard not to love the incab shot, it really sounds amazing. I was gonna say too it'd be really cool to see one of these C&D RLs dump, but you even got that! Nice outro shot too, really concludes the video nicely. Another fantastic post, loving all these NYC videos.

Garbage Trucks AZ It did me, too. What's neat is you get to be familiar with them if you do some preliminary research, see some pictures, and then spend a couple days really focusing on the industry when physically there in the city. But over and over we would see a new one we hadn't heard of, or a commercial hauler whose name was unfamiliar. Would've gotten a lengthier / better vid of the unloading, but that guy that started coming over had something against filming school projects on the property ;) One day I'll get you a nice scrap metal ejection video, like I know you've requested. Always a pleasure receiving a solid comment from you, Christian

Top notch Scott. My favorite shots were all from a different perspective than I remember having, absolutely love that feeling. Especially loving the up close shots of the sling lift at work on Pana Staszka 400 Series. Easily my favorite of all the ways to handle a 1/2 yard can. Closely followed by the driving shot of the older Castle R Model / 400, I had no idea you were across the street lol. Third would be the part where you start to walk alongside the All Gone 2R-II. I must have a thing for low and long trucks, 30 yard conventional RLs and Aussie 8x4 front loaders get the same tingly feeling going. That deep, satisfying rumble of the Queens County truck def came through in the video. Not the most in your face sound, but the most satisfying IMO. Was a pleasure filming with you, hopefully next time comes sooner rather than later. :)

georgewuzheer Having now seen some sling lift at work I can wholly agree, but it takes a seasoned operator to make it entertaining. And the little panel just inside the hopper lip doesn't hurt either, really helped every truck that had it. Definitely appreciate a 'real' sized rear loader, I've about had it with being around too many of these lil' 20 yarder Leaches. I can stand the 25 yard Heil, but a 20yd 2RII looks/feels sub-par. Ditto on the filming! Have fun in Poland

Wow! Amazing video Scott! Really love the ride along shot, especially at 13:45 when he took off! That truck sounds amazing! What kind of truck is that! Do you know how old it is, what enging and transmission it has? Any more footage of that particular truck? What was the body, Leach 2RII rear loader?

GarbageSean Yeah the ride-along in this video was jaw dropping in person. 1994 Autocar ACL (a conventional cab that's rather similar to the WG) with Cummins 290, Eaton-Fuller, 30yd 2RII. George will have some of that I'm sure, he filmed more of it packing than I did.

Well that first shot was amazing. Truck looked amazing in black as well as with the black rims. Enjoyed watching him pack away that huge box. Thought it was awesome to hear that it's manual transmission too. Second truck was awesome. Loved all the winches in the hopper and up top. 7:57 was cool, seeing how all the material fall out in the packing process. And man, that is one awesome looking Mack. Beautiful Autocar. Man that thing looks brand new. It's amazing how nice these trucks are kept. The in cab shot was great. Where was George when you were in the cab out of curiosity? Great work, enjoyed seeing even more demo trucks. Definitely looking forward to more!
@Trashman242
@Trashman242 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, the one with "all the winches" has what I guess is called a sling lift, not all that common except for the fleets of a few haulers. Many just use the winch and finagle the bin by hand and with the packer, if they don't have the diamond lift...George wasn't far behind, he got in the cab for the ride to the C&D dump but what we sometimes did was ride around the block and then trade off, and in that case both got in for the longer ride into Brooklyn. Good, thanks; happy to hear that it served its purpose

Absolutely amazing! Love all of the different ways that they can tip the metal carts. The Loadmasters are badass, with their huge ass blade that swallows up the load. That old Mack only adds to that badassness. That Volvo/ Leach is amazing too! I really like that name allgone carting. Astonishing 1000 companies contracted for demolition. Wonder where they keep all the trucks. Much enjoyed!

garbageproductions1 Many of the carting companies are based in small garages in NJ, but a lot of them out in the less-dense boroughs like Queens and Brooklyn. They mostly seem to have fewer than seven trucks, with only a few exceptions. Glad it was entertaining!

Great job! Have you checked out my NYC vids (pt 1 & 2) that I have posted this week and last week? I was in NYC last week and saw many of the trucks you filmed here. I agree, NYC has awesome trucks, and that one you rode in towards the end sounded amazing and awesome shot and the transfer station as well. Very cool seeing that Queens County one smashing that pallet, I too filmed them lifting dumpsters with the winch at I recall around 12am lol. Did you see any DSNY or Silver Services trucks while you were there? Again, great footage, and make sure to take a look at my videos too!

Why do the air breaks on some trucks make the chirping sound heard at 12:49 when they are released? What models of trucks will have air breaks most likely to make that noise?
@Trashman242
@Trashman242 2 жыл бұрын
I've pondered that for some time, I think it mostly has to do with air passing through the treadle valve or some other component in the air brake system. Sound might vary with what those components are made of and how they vibrate as air goes by, but it's funny how consistent the sounds are for certain trucks. 1990s Peterbilts (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qseaaLRn2MiXfJc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oriIlrhpsZqVf30.html), Ford Louisville models (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdGPmaySq5vMn40.html), some Crane Carriers (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ed52fpmb1p3OhmQ.html), and the Mack LE (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pah_a9h3ub3RZ4E.html) are good examples of trucks in my industry that make distinct, recognizable air brake sounds.
