Just ordered this knife. Cant wait to get my hands on it. Wanting something smaller, lighter to carry scout style edc for daily walks/hikes with my dog. Something i can use and abuse carving and slicing, practicing bushcrafting while my dog explores and does his own thing. I have my normal bushcraft knife but its too large to carry here in the valley around others who may get nervous at my beastly rambo style knife.

These size knives are my favorite, over an Izula, or a BK-14, or similar knives, I hear alot of good things about Essee, my go to knife in this size, is my Rident Solution, I got it for its handle size, and no regrets, but this Essee 3 look's darn good too.

I have owned and hard used both. If your glove size is small or medium the rat3 will be great for you, if you have large or x-large glove size the esee3 will be more comfortable with its 1/2in. longer handle.

Say Heah Aaron, I like a 3" blade, For me it's like using the best part of a larger blade for fine task's. Infact I teamed my Rodent 3 with my Rodent 7, Yeah, I Piggyback the two and I Bakdric Carry them. a lovely piece of kit. I bet the Essee 3 would work great with the Essee 6.,,.

I happen to prefer large knives and tend to ignore the little guys like the ESEE 3. This knife is different, though. I own the 5 & 6 - two favourites in my collection - and began having a hankering for the ESEE 3 and the Izula ii. Now, if Becker was to offer me a small knife in their series, I just couldn't see wanting it. ESEE is a whole other story. These small ESEE knives are very attractive. I'll be ordering the 3 and the Izula ii very soon. A good knife review, by the way. gideonstactical always gives a fine review and, without necessarily meaning to, market well the various knives that they review. Correction: I earlier stated that "...if Becker was to offer me a small knife...I just couldn't see wanting it." Happened to forget that I own the BK17: a relatively small blade in the Becker line. It's a superb knife in my opinion. And it looks cool.

Received mine last week and did a little wood work with it on a hike. This is such a solid knife and I am glad I picked it up based on your review. My only quibble is the molded plastic is very snug and it takes some greater than desired effort to draw the blade. I am wondering if this will loosen up a bit over time. Love your channel!

Every time I go to get the Esee 3, in that last moment I imagine myself needing a pry bar and wishing I had an Esee 4 :/ Anyway, I got a Rat 3 and lost it ffs, so now I'm considering getting the Esee 3 (without sheath) assuming it will theoretically snap in perfectly to the Rat 3's sheath. Anybody have both to confirm?

That's not Kydex. it's some other type of plastic that is injection molded, not vacuum formed like Kydex would be. They describe it as molded.

kind of a conundrum - just watched your vid "ESEE 4- I've had better" and on that you said you liked it but there was a "love/hate" regarding the blade thickness of 3/16th in VS the 1/8th in the ESEE 3 ...... But on this vid you said the handle was too thin and a little thicker would help to not tire the hand out .... so my confusion is probably just me but seems the "little" thicker ESEE 4 but with a ESEE 3 profile so ..... 3/16 vs 1/8 = 1/16 in (not a big deal) but also stronger for prying 4.1 in vs 3.38 in = 0.72 in (not a big deal) but adds little extra reach 8.0 oz vs 5.2 oz = 2.8 oz (not a bid deal) and adds a bit of heft seems to me like 95% of the review is personal preference and not practicality EDC a ESEE 4 for a 6' 5" 400lb man could be quite adequate whereas a EDC for a 5' 10" (avg height) 190lbs (avg weight) man might prefer a ESEE 4 or a ESEE 3 comparing the 2 men seems like a big difference to me basically I like your videos and you seem practical and thoughtful for the most BUT after watching both vids, why didnt you just combine your reviews for the ESEE 3 and ESEE 4 .... Just seems like "nitpicking" over trivial things but then might just be me - oh well old video so w/e

guywhomissesthe80s if you've handled both back to back I think you'll change your kind. Even though the measurements are very miniscule inthe hand you can definitely tell a large difference in thickness of handle and blade. Also the 4 comes with a very thick egde from factory compared to the 3 so the 3 cuts like a razor where the 4 cuts more like an ax. The advantage of the 4 being thicker is that the blade is stonger and there is more width in the handle so you can really bear down hard on a 4 without gloves and its still pretty comfortable. With the 3 if you bear down on it the thinner handle definitely digs into your hand more so it can become uncomfortable rather quickly. Thats why the 4 is better suited for woods use and I think the 3 is better for edc/urban carry. Both are awesome in my opinion for a simple knife that does knife things and both are very capable at all tasks

Yea, the ESEE-3, Izula, and ESEE-6 come with the cheap plastic molded sheathes. The 4, 5, and Junglas come with the nice Kydex sheathes. I just ordered my first ESEE-3 and will be making a Kydex sheathe for it when it arrives. I'm not sure which one I'm going to do it with, but either the Izula or the 3 I am going to make a pancake type Kydex sheathe with wings that will form to my ESEE-5 sheathe and then I will screw it into the rivet holes on the 5's sheathe so it will piggyback on the front. The 5 is an awesome, solid knife. But I want a smaller, thinner knife with it to use for finer cutting. I'm going to use a thinner .060 gauge kydex to keep it as flat as possible. I'll have it ride lower on the ESEE-5 sheath so the handles are at offset heights. I'll be looking closer at it once I begin. If I deem it best, I might make a new ESEE-5 sheathe if it appears warranted for better mating of the two. Having the two fixed blades piggybacked together with a pair of the BladeTech MolleLoks should make it a good set to throw on my pack.

Beautiful knife. I own one myself. But let’s be honest, a dull butter-knife throws better sparks, and that’s my gripe, how can it be called a great survival or bushcraft knife if it can’t throw sparks?

@@steveb8001 That sounds really unlucky. I own just about every Esee knife and only 2 of them had semi rounded spines. Instead of a file, use a belt sander or a dremel tool. Leaves a much more refined finish. Then you can touch it up with a hockey puck.

Honestly why do people recommend pairing knives, I personally think that’s pretty useless you can pack a light weight hatchet which is actually meant to chop, and you can use it to cut some wood or anything else, the smaller knife can be used for more delicate or control oriented stuff like whittling, Snares etc...

I own the 6 and really enjoy the overall versatility that it has over other large knives. it can do most things pretty well, but let's be honest, if you are going to carry a small secondary blade (which I do), why not just keep a smaller scandi grind knife with you for woodworking. I just don't see the purpose for a second full flat grind blade unless it's a dedicated small game processing one. to have a 100 dollar small blade knife doesn't make sense to me, especially when you don't the weight or strength that comes with a full tang small knife. more money, more weight and less capable is all I see with the esee 3.

Yes I think fallkniven is a very good choice its a very fine steel. But I have found the 1095 is easier to sharpen than the stainless the edge recovers a lot easier. Because you can use a sand rock to sharp the 1095 versus the laminate stainless or the 35 , 30 and such but I use them all around the house and my job I carry my sv30s it takes a better sharpener for those than the 1095.
