This video will probably get a lot of hate and dislikes but please understand this is my opinion and experience with the knife.
There are a lot of good videos on the internet about esee but it is important that the cons also get out.
Tell me what you think.
ESEE's edge retention is sad. A mora will outperform it on edge retention with a smaller angle.
Maybe the 440c version is better? or maybe I have a failed heat treat?
I might make a video about the fast edge degrading later.
Esee is not a outdoor survival brand in my opinion. It just does not have the right specs for a survival blade.
I guess it would be ok for urban survival.
ESEE-4 SPECS:
Overall Length: 9.0"
Cutting Edge Length: 4.1"
Overall Blade Length: 4.5"
Blade Width: 1.25"
Weight (Knife Only): 8.0 ounces
Drop Point Blade Style
Maximum Thickness: .188"
1095 Carbon Steel, 55 - 57 Rc. (Carbon Steel Model)
Removable Handles
Rounded Pommel w/ Lanyard Hole
Ambidextrous Molded Sheath

First of all I would like to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year! Second I would like to get something off my heart. I think it's insane how many people react offended like I touched their feelings by just sharing my opinion. I thought we fought for the freedom of speech? I can totally understand if someone doesn't agree with my opinion but I think it's very very low if you feel so offended by it that you start attacking me personally by posting bad things about me. Come on guys grow up I'm just trying to share my thoughts and opinions with the community so you can make your own. I also listen to negative reviews of the stuff I like.. it helps me decide by thinking by myself about how I would experience that. I don't always agree with negative or positive reviews either but hell I'm not going to make someone feel bad or pick a fight about it. Good day to you all and be safe.

I would not worry about the angry comments too much. This seems to be the new trend, that everybody gets offended if you have an opinion that he or she disagrees with. These people are for freedom of speech but only if you share their opinion. I enjoy your channel and your honest reviews! Greetings from Germany!

Im a 61 year old man and have been hiking/camping/spending time in the wild every few months, and doing so for 43 years. Your videos are amazingly instructive and beneficial, whether someone disagrees or agrees with them. Your comments, whether I agree or disagree with your opinions, stimulate thinking about the topics and opinions you have both expressed AND your teachings will help a person survive in the wild. The LOVE that you have for bushcrafting and all outdoor activities, and for your audience, is very apparent for anyone paying attention. Ignore rude and hateful comments and don't take it personally because you BOTH have HELPED thousands of people make better choices for their bushcrafting kit and make better decisions when spending valuable time in gift to mankind that we call "Nature".

First off the blade is 40 degrees not 50 as I have this knife, 2nd you destroyed the edge then blamed Esee which coming out of the box is extremely sharp 3rd you are right it will rust if not cared for but the great thing about 1095 steel is it’s easy to sharpen and mine holds its sharpness pretty well and if you get stainless you won’t be able to sharpen it in the field and it breaks easier than 1095.

DBK - Having owned the ESEE 4 and ESEE 6 knives for some time now, and having taught survival/bushcrafting skills to students, I feel I am qualified to make a few assessments here. First, I can completely agree with your feeling towards the quality of the steel on the ESEE knives. I truly believe that they are designed and heat treated with toughness being the main goal in mind. I believe ESEE is expecting this knife to be used by people like military personnel and be beat on and really abused. So to avoid having their awesome warranty being taken completely advantage of, they make their knives with a softer heat treat to increase toughness, but at the cost of edge retention. But Secondarily I believe they also wanted their knives softer to allow for easier "sharpen-ability" in the wild when you are away from your benchstones or what have you. I do however completely agree that the 50+ degree edge bevel is quite ridiculous though, and would have preferred a LOT more acute edge angle from the factory, as this took me a couple hours to completely reprofile the knife when I got it new. Rather annoying. As for your argument about the knife not having a 90 degree spine for striking ferro rods, well you said it yourself; the steel rusts extremely easily and therefor without that blade coating, the steel would rust rather quickly. So having a bare area on the spine for a ferro rod would probably not have been in ESEE's best interest on a 1095 carbon steel knife. Furthermore, most every ferro rod I've ever purchased already comes with an included striker anyways, so I usually never have a need to use my knife anyways. And if it were truly an emergency, I would just simply use the cutting edge of my knife to strike the rod because the little dulling that would occur to my knife is MUCH less of an inconvenience than dying if I freeze to death from not getting a fire! Lol. The way I see it, I can always sharpen my knife back up on a rock because the steel is soft anyways... And as for your complains about the knife not being good at carving feather sticks, well I can only say that you might want to expand your fundamental thought process when it comes to bushcrafting/survival tasks and re-evaluate what is ACTUALLY necessary. When it actually comes to making a fire, it's not at all NECESSARY that your shavings remain connected to the stick... lol this is just something that has merely become romanticized by bushcrafters. The down and dirty of it is, if you need a fire fast, you can simply make a pile of wood shavings; that's it! Lol. So as long as your knife has a good enough edge to still cut into wood (which means unless you are attempting to cut with the spine of your knife, even a nearly butter-knife edge would suffice) you should have no trouble making a simple pile of wood shavings to start a fire. Feather sticks are pretty, but definitely NOT necessary. In a true survival situation, your probably not going to be using your knife for very much other than some simple wood carving, or aiding in cutting some pine bows for bedding, processing game, carving traps, and cutting line... The reality is, your shelter and fire is going to primarily be built using deadfall and wood that you can break off by hand, unless of course your one of that guys that carries and axe everywhere with you! But I don't see that being the case for most people that go into the woods, but I digress. Additionally, I strongly believe that anyone who batons their knives simply doesn't know what they're doing and should seek instruction. There is no reason to ever abuse knives like that, as they were not designed for it, and it's foolhardy to risk breaking your knife if it's the only tool you have on you in the time of a crisis. There are always other ways around achieving your goal than resorting to smashing your knife with a wooden club. Basically, once you have the knowledge, you don't even actually need a fixed blade to survive, you could do it with just a simple folding knife. Cheers

I have a TOPS knife that had the same coating. I honestly believe they do it purely for aesthetics and to prevent customer complaints about rust. Truth be told, a majority of people buy their gear and never actually use it. That ones that do usually tinker and get gear to their liking anyways. And here in the USA many bushcraft and survival instructors recommend 1095 due to being able to strike a fire with it. A little animal fat or vegetable oil does wonders to prevent rust and still allow you to process food

It rusts and has sub par edge retention, sure. But it's easy to maintain, grease and some simple sharpening work gets it back in shape quickly. As for the edge retention I got great results from reshaping the edge into a thicker (the opposite of concave?), somewhere around twice the original retention int erms of time when in use for processing wood. As I always carry some compact triangle shjarpenign stones with me I never had a problem with it. To boot the thing doesn't break no matter what kind of abuse I put it to. To put it in another way, it's not a knife I'd use for fine carving, I'd use my mora or fallkniven for that, it's a knife I can stick on my hip knowing it wont ever break no matter what I need it to do. Agree that it's hella overpriced for the materials used though.

I did some googling and it looks like the idea behind the soft steel is so you can sharpen it in the field with rocks. Soft steel also lends itself to high durability in regards to abuse. The guy has a survival school in the amazon jungle where locals love machetes(high carbon soft steel) and sharpen those with rocks. I think people misunderstand the design behind esee knives. Think a beat up old pickup truck that keeps on running... not a high performance sports car.

The steel is crap?? I suppose that's why alot of survival knife makers use it in their knives. It may dull easier than other steels but it is also easier to sharpen and regain that edge in the field. And it is for hard use without fear of breaking your blade.

I'm amazed by some of the comments saying how you messed up the edge by convexing it and that esee's geometry doesn't lend itself to be convexed. I'd like to hear these people explain how rounding the shoulders off would make the apex take more chips/ rolls. I bought an esee 6 and sold it immediately. It came with a recurve, the handle scales were uncomfortable and I just don't like fingerchoils. I much prefer the becker series of knives (the thumb ramp can be easily ground off).

Great videos. It's good to respect everybody's opinion and that's what helps us all learn different things. I've been reading a nice book on steel lately and I think one of the reasons they choose to use 1095 is because it is a strong steel. It doesn't hold an edge as long as the higher end steals such as s35v but it is a lot stronger meaning that you can beat it up and not risk breaking the tip or breaking the knife all together. The longer a knife holds an edge the more brittle it becomes therefore the more of a chance it has breaking under pressure. This book I've been reading is great. I thought it was going to be boring at first. I never understood why knife companies such as tops or esee always stuck with 1095 steel. But now I do. It's just a super tough steel. But there are certain aspects of it that do not make sense. I definitely get what you're saying about not being able to strike a rod off the back of it to create fire. Also if you have a knife like this out in a wet environment or even remotely wet environment it's going to start rusting fast which I guess is why they put the coating on the blade itself but there's nothing you can do about the edge other than hopefully carry around some oil and keeping it as dry as possible. All in all I'm continuing to learn about the different knife steals. I think it's really hard to find the overall perfect knife. There's always going to be strengths and weaknesses. And I think it just comes down to what works best for each person.

I 100% agree with your review. Well done and props for trying to save people money and sharing real world perspective. I had a ESEE 4 and also did not care for it. They get tons of recommendations, but in practical use, it's not warranted in my opinion. For the price of a 1095 knife, you can get a F1 in VG10 which is almost as easy to sharpen, does not rust and holds and edge much better. I also thought the handle was too short for the blade length. I have big hands, but not huge sausage finger hands and wished there was another 3/4" to 1" length on the handle. Keep up the good work guys!

both tops and Becker are a lot better than Esee in my opinion. Esee seems overhyped as they don't break. however.. bending is just what happens if you don't harden a steel. Balance is key and in my opinion esee is way of that balance in terms of toughness vs edge retention

The esee4 doesn't make sense to me... and the bk16 seemed great until I held it and it felt alien. But yes the 4 is either too thick, too short, too soft or too big for edc. The 3hm and 6hm/6 are great--the 3hm is thin yet tough with a fantastic handle and the 6 is mind-blowingly capable for anything ever, thick enough to cut and thin enough for details. The choil only makes sense to me in the 6 where you don't lose handle space and it adds a dimension to the big knife (for the others it just takes away from a nice handle)... But nonetheless my next knife is likely a f1--I love small knives with real handles for when the esee6 is too big/scary.

1095 may be an inexpensive steel, but it's been around a damn long time & has well proved itself as a blade steel. As far as it rusting, well, if your not to lazy to maintain a carbon steel blade then rust isn't a problem. Of course, knife makers are using a lot of stainless these days for you folks that don't know how to, or are to lazy to maintain a carbon steel blade. And this younger "millennial generation" have been brainwashed into believing that there are actually "super steel" knife blades when the fact is there isn't. All knife blades will dull & all knife blades have their "breaking and/or chipping" point. Now, I can't speak for the 1095 steel ESEE uses in their knives but only knives I've had in 1095 steel, none of which have been an ESEE. Also, if you been around long enough, you'd find out, for every 5 people that swears by all the 01, D2, CPM3V, etc. "super steels, there are 1000 people that'll swear by 1095 steel. Makes you wonder how people ever survived and built this world without having stainless "super steel" knives!!

oldtimer4567 the problem is very simple knife manufacturers continue to want to use cheaper carbon steels. they have been proven to not be as effective and durable as steels like s35vn CPM 3v 01 tool steel and m390. they want to charge top dollar for an inferior cheap Steel. This doesn't just pertain to rusting. 1095 does not hold an edge well. That's just simple science. there is absolutely no comparison between cpm3v and 1095. 3V will completely Slaughter it in every category. to me the only benefits of having 1095 Spring Steel is if it's my only knife and I'm heavily abusing it in a survival situation and I don't have to worry about the blade breaking in half. The knife will bend before it breaks. The funny thing is cpm3v will do the same thing. right now it is the steel that serious bushcrafters want today. We've had enough of 1095. It's a cheap and fear and they're much better Metals out there. why settle for less? I bet you married a big fat ass hog because she was the first dumbass bitch that would take your marriage proposal

I of course encourage your honest opinion. I haven't owned an ESEE personally. I was thinking of picking up an ESEE 6 as a one tool option or a mid-size back-up knife to a smaller belt knife to be used for chopping and batoning. I have seen other channels exclaim how good the edge retention on ESEE steel is (I am thinking of the Jungles in particular), so it is confusing to see that some people feel differently. I would think edge retention is a fairly objective metric.

hey mate, I don't have other esee knives so I can't see if mine is a bad example but I do know 1095 is a budget steel and the Esee knives don't come at a budget price. I've had some decent experiences with 1095-cro-van on my becker bk 2 @ 58 hrc but 55-57 HRC is just not fit for smaller knives. this hardness is for machete's or huge choppers. Esee has an ok edge retention if you keep the huge angle of the factory bevel but if you wan't optimal cutting performance the steel is too weak. I own a lot of knives and they all have better edge retention than my esee has even in smaller angles. Be aware that esee has very good marketing (a bit like bear grylls with his knives) A lot of people think something is awesome because the rest of the people think it's awesome. This is whyI got a lot of hate on this video. I'm not saying this review determines how good or bad esee is but it's my personal experience and opinion. it's healthy to make yours with an open mind. If the knife really appeals to you you should get it and try it. If you end up not liking it there is a whole world wanting to buy that knife from you. Just don't make something awesome because you spend money on it and it needs to be awesome haha. I have to say I am as sucker for edge retention. The esee knives are very sturdy and the sheath is very awesome. I just didn't like the steel. I would personally choose the 440c version which would be better I think. hope this helps!

Dutch Bushcraft Knives Dude, here is the problem I think, I have trained with Mike Perrin and Jeff Randall, as has Dave Canterbury, and many other survivalist. Esee is not at all like Bear Grylls these guys are proven shooters and know there business and came up with these knife designs because of a gap in the marketplace. This is why you're getting the responses you get. you're in your 20s and own a lot of knives,. How many knives do you think Mike Perrin has owned? Or Ethan Becker whom himself collaborated with Esee knives to make his chef knives. These guys use the knives they make in a myriad of different settings and environments with a great deal of success. Bushcraft and survival are two very different things. There are things I don't like about Falkniven and Mora but, they are great slicers have good serviceable edges and relatively comfortable handles, but both handles have grip and hard use issues over time.
@scottm5972
@scottm5972 7 жыл бұрын
Clarification on ESEEs.. I obviously like Esee, but I'm not a fan boy and they're not perfect so I'm going to share some issues I have with them here. I have a few Izulas peppered around in certain kits and applications, a 6, a 5, two 4s, and an Esee 3. And in that experience, have learned there is a degree of unjustified hype associated with them: - The threaded bushings used to secure the scales are constricted of soft aluminum. When I received it, the handles where not torqued down, so I disassembled it, then reassembled it with some lock-tight. Without torquing hard, I started to strip two of them. I explained this to them and they bluntly said to send $2 for each bushing or send back the whole thing. They were very blunt about this, like barely taking up a whole line, leaving me to think it would be more efficient for them to have just typed, "FUCK YOU". Would I opt to send it back and pay for postage so their "scientists" can take on the sophisticated operation of replacing a bushing and tightening down a screw? No, it would be a pain in the ass, especially because of the timing. So upon receipt of this blunt reply, I inquired as to whether or not he smoked crack and then suggested it might just be better if I smashed it to pieces so they can just replace the whole thing for free. Anyway, I forget the threading, but I replaced them with steel bushing spacers, like Esee should, but continues to fail to do for some reason. It's a little like Ferrari equipping their cars with a set of tires with the traction of melon skins. Senseless ineptitude, or deliberately blatant.. I don't know. - If you're in the military, you might find yourself annoyed going the Esee route. Black sheaths are known as, "bullseye black" because they literally leap out under the IR necessary to utilize night vision, which makes it a thing to avoid. Esee makes certain color schemes for their blades and handles that would serve us well in the theater, notably desert tan and even better, dark earth. But these sought after color schemes seem to come STRICTLY with black sheaths (except the Esee 4 in desert tan which comes with an OD sheath, *BUT*, with SHINY fasteners ffs) especially the dark earth color that matches the multicam ACUs presently worn. End result, if you want dark earth, you'll also need to buy an additional sheath in either coyote brown or olive drab to be consistent. They're smart and military minded, so I can't help but sense the smirk I'm getting as they nickel and dime me and others in this regard. - On the Esee 6, the micarta scales didn't mate perfectly with the tang as I could see a sliver of light peering through the gap. Were the micarta scales slightly deformed? NOPE, it's because the tang is ever so slightly bent, but of course, you can't torque down the scales to compensate for this, not with the ultra soft bushings they include.. This is nit picking and doesn't hurt its function, but bears mention when a company is hyped to be HQ all the way, and then has this reflected in its rather high prices. - My two Izulas are not exact duplicates of each other, with one pointier in its geometry while the other one has a a more abrupt upward sweep and more belly. It is miniscule, but my eye caught it and it causes one to rattle slightly in its sheath, while the other fits like a glove. This is not restricted to the pair of Izulas, as the same thing is present in my Esee 4s. The version with a clip point is flawless, as one should expect, while the other has that more pronounced and abrupt upward sweep and belly. In addition, it is ⅛" shorter than the other. Who worked the grinding wheel here, Helen Keller on a Monday morning? The above probably make my Esees sound like a box of cheap trash, but most of these differences are very subtle and only bear mention because of the flawless rep Esee has. Furthermore, my Ontario Rat and RD series of fixed blades boast the symmetry, fit and consistency Esee lacks, although not the smoothness and polish of the micarta and the indestructible Esee coatings. Nit picking aside, they're kinda/sorta worth the asking price if you've got the money because of the steel, the way it fits in your hand without hot spots, the outstanding hard sheaths and they're just robust tools that you needn't worry about failing if you're say, Les Stroud and up shits creek for a week. YMMV.. just food for thought, but I'd probably suggest to a friend that they go with an Ontario Rat if they can tolerate the shitty black nylon sheaths that come with them (except the Rat 3.. it's a duplicate for the Esee 3 and either fits in either snugly) Thus concludes my Esee rant.👍

Both Mora and Hultafors are good bushcraft knives to start with! If you like bigger knives you should take a look at the Bark river bravo 1, bravo 1.5 or the Fallkniven S1 or A1 but all these are more survival type knives.

First, I agree 1095 is a horrible steel for a survival knife. I owned an Esee 3 and a Becker BK-2. The Becker was good for splitting wood, but that's about it. When I bought a Falkniven F-1 in VG-10, I sold both knives and didn't look back. The F1 had much better edge retention, and rust resistance. #2. Very good, honest and informative vid ! Did you ever have the chance (or interest) to try another Esee? And if, did it perform as badly? Maybe you find the time to answer, I´d really apreciate! I myself own an Esee Laserstrike, it is also not the best cutter, (but not TOO bad either) but incredibly tough. In fact, so tough that I use it as a throwing knife (Annotation: Of course I would NOT take advantage of ESEEs life time warranty if I´d break the knive while throwing. But I do not think it will break anytime soon, no matter what I could do to it).

+Wartstein I never had the chance to test another one sadly. Esee hardens their knives up to 55-57 hrc which is really soft for a small blade. It makes the knife bend instead of break but reduces the edge retention a lot. A trade-off I'm not willing to make. But as you say you can misuse it quite a lot without problems haha

Thanks a lot for your reply! Not to many youtubers having over 100 k subscribers still do so... / Yes, ESEE Knifes have quite a soft steel, but as far as I realize quite average hardness for 1095 steel knifes? The edge angel is very bad for cutting in any case. Still I think your ESEE 4 might have been an unusually bad heat treated one maybe. I am far from beeing an ESEE-Fanboy, but I feel they are quite average in the range of 1095 knives. WAY too expensive for the steel though! Maybe you can test another ESEE some day, would be interesting. Maybe even the Laser strike which I own, it´s a lot better (or less bad ;-) than the 4 concerning Ergos. Best finger choil I ever experienced, and I normally really DO NOT like finger choils. Greetings from Salzburg / Austria, keep up the good work, I hardly ever miss a vid you post.

If you still have it you should sharpen it vigorously a few more times. The edge retention may be an issue with whoever sharpened it at the factory getting it abit too hot. Hallo DBK.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын

I agree. The Esee 4 isn't as great as other choices. I've even had one crack at the belly. The knife didn't break. But the edge had a visible crack. The steel from Esee can be great but I don't like the geometry of the 4 at all. The 6 is a much better "survival" knife It's a much better large bushcraft knife. It's a better choice all around. The geometry comes better from ESEE. And then once you convex it the edge will stay workable all day. Just strop back to razor sharp at the end of each knife which should be part of the nightly ritual anyway. It's a wonderful knife. I'd like to see you guys try the new 6 HM.

Seems strange to me that it would be such low hardness for 1095. I think maybe 58-60 for that steel. If batonning maybe 58 so it's not as likely to chip and fairly not crazy hard to field sharpen. But 55 is pretty soft in my opinion.

Buying a knife is like buying a car, sometimes you get a lemon other times not. Also it's what the buyer intended to use it for, like a car. You're not going to buy a car to haul lumber in, you buy a truck. Same with a knife... I'm not going to use the ESEE 4 to split firewood. I'd use the ESEE 5, which a buddy just demonstrated with and he loves it. I'd use the ESEE 4 for cutting up game, use the ESEE 5 for cutting small trees or splitting firewood etc. It all depends on the person how he or she likes it, the use of it, and the quality of what it is used for to that individual needs. I have multiple knives I use depending on what I am going use it for. To have one knife to do everything is nearly impossible. This is just my opinion.

I had to look at more than only edge retention in that review. The handle and sheath are fine and I especially liked the sheath. As a lot of people don't really care about steel performance I couldn't weight that as heavy as in my own video. Basically the Esee 4 is an OK knife but the steel choice and hardening is crap. In that review I had to bring the negatives in a not to negative form. I made it about 3-4 years ago. These days I would never even released that review and just send the knife back.

Hm, I've had similar results with an ESEE3. Convexed it, stripped the blade and blued it. Put g10 scales on it and used it for a few years. I thought it was great till I got a Bark River in 3v. That led to many other custom knives and now I have settled on a Milanika Puukkko in D2 and 4v. For outdoor survival knife I'm using an LT Wright Genesis in FFG in A2, and a Ben Akin Wapiti in 01. The ESEE sheath knives are tough, but they are also rough on your hands and that just doesn't seem to work well. The one ESEE knife I advocate for is the Junglas. I'm sure the RTAK2 is a great blade but the Junglas with TKC scales is full on super saiyan lvl3 ! I've beaten the hell out of it, and easily touch it up with my DC4 stone in the field. Since I live in hardwood bottom land it's nice to have a dedicated baton knife for fire making. If you guys wanna borrow it for a video to see if you can destroy it just lemme know. Would be happy to send it over the pond for a test! Just send me an email. Love watching the videos!

BK2 uses 1095 Cro-Van that supposedly rusts slower, holds and edge better and can take a bit more beating. I think back then DBK weren't fans of Esee knifes because they were marketed as "survival" knifes. I would really want a better steel for a survival scenario.

Great series and good honest ESEE 4 review. I admit i jumped on the RAT Cutlery bandwagon years ago before the name change to ESEE. Owned the Izula,3 4 & 6. Only one I kept was the Izula. Came to really dislike the choils and the biggest issue FOR ME was the 3 & 4 horrible grip egos, just terrible. The 1095 for me was not an issue, in fact my favorite bush knife is the TOPS BOB. Don't concern yourself with all of the butt hurt ESEE fan boys chiming in to save their beloved utility knives. Keep up the great work & thank you for your videos!!! On a side note, I am awaiting delivery of my Jaakari Puukko 110 which I discovered on your video. Thanks again!!!

+Sig Rockatansky thanks a lot Sig! 1095 is not a bad steel but at 55hrc like with esee it's just too soft. I own a Bob in 154cm. Overall quality feels much better than esee and the steel was properly heat treated. I would believe their 1095 is much better hardened

Japanese Waterstones. I've tried many different angles on this esee but only the massive 45 degree factory bevel seemed to be strong enough for acceptable retention. For me this angle was to large to comfortably use though.

ESEE 4 knives come from the factory with a 20deg grind/bevel. Mine is a work horse. ESEE has the best warranty out there. They want satisfied customers. It’s unconditional. Unless you have tried a replacement or two with the same issues, maybe you need to reconsider your objectivity? Maybe a bad one found its way to you?

I have an ESEE 3 and I do like the sheath, and it seems like a good general knife for camping and hiking. I haven't really put it to any hard use. Totally not a fanboy. I wouldn't let the Esse haters turn you from buying one. Research your needs and go from there. I don't believe for a minute that he dulled his knife doing feather sticking. No, they don't have the highest Rockwell ratings around but they are tough knives with a great warranty.

Ha! I just wanted to ask what you think of esee, ontario rat/tak1... line of knives as a survival knife. I guess I got my anwser:) So for you a mora garberg, something from barkriver or enzo are best choices? Don't get me wrong, an A1pro is a terrific knife, but I would never pay 300 EUR+ for a survival knife-shit gets lost in the woods...

I love Enzo, bark river, fallkniven and mora all in their own way. Enzo has a very bushcrafty feel to it. You can choose which handle you like and there are many steel options. They are also pretty cheap for what they are in my opinion. Only the handle geometry could have been better in my opinion. Thats where bark river kicks in at a higher price range. Also nice steels to choose from, 100+ handle materials and excellent handle geometry on almost all their different knives. Fallkniven has that completely care-free aspect. They are fool proof and can survive 10 years in the mud. The sheaths are simple and effective. They are a no BS brand that delivers quality without all the fancy stuff. Mora is unbeatable in every way if you take price into account. The garberg might be more expensive than we are used to from Mora but for it's price it's still the best in it's pricerange (in my opinion). Mora is also a no BS brand. simple and effective. The Mora bushcraft force is the best price/quality knife on this planet in my opinion. I would say all of these brands are an excellent choice and all have a wide variety of knives to choose from. Even the much cheaper becker bk2 in 1095-crovan did much better in edge retention than this esee. Ofcourse this esee will survive alot of stress testing like batonning trough steel and stuff but a crowbar will also survive haha. it's just that the esee gets dull from looking at it.

I don't own an Esee; however, I did see another KZfaq video where the guy changed the factory edge and experienced all the same issues you did. He returned it and Esee put the factory edge back on the knife and it worked fine for him as long as he didn't change the bevel. The points you raise are all relevant.

I had an ESEE knife in the past and I thought it was complete JUNK! I bought it based on internet hype, but when I got it I just didn't understand where that was coming from. It was dull and did not cut well, and the handle felt like a 2x4 with no shaping done at all. I agree they have nice sheaths though.

@@michaelstjohn6086 I attribute his issues to operator error. Some people just don't know how to deal with carbon steel knives. I live in Florida and I've used all manner of carbon steel knives. I've never seen one turn into a pile of rust. They all get sharp, and they cut things. I've had carbon steel knives by Ontario, ESEE, Mora, Ahti, Wood Jewel, Kellam, Cold Steel...you get the idea. You get out in the middle of nowhere and you chip out your super steel knife, you're kind of out of luck. I'd rather rehab a rolled edge than deal with a chipped edge. I like stainless for filet knives and small fixed blades, especially ones squirrelled away for emergency use. To each his own...

Always interesting with "negative" reviews :) I'm a big fan of Fällkniven knives and have a couple of them, but I also own a ESEE 4 non coated version and I must say that it has kept it's edge really good! I bought it because I wanted a blade that I really could give a beating and it still should hold up quite well. And many reviews gave me that impression. And with their great warranty (just send it back if you ever get a problem with it) I gave it a try. After almost a year of heavy use (batoning,carving etc) I just strop it with leather and compound and the edge is back razor sharp. As many have said before, maybe you got a Monday version of it? I also have some thoughts on the convex edge you made, I use convex edges on 99% of my blades and they have proven good. But they have very different steel compared with the 1095 as the ESEE 4 use. Maybe it's a bad combination, 1095 and convex edge? What was the reason you made it convex? Did you experience the same problem when it was flat grind (from factory)? ATB, Joachim

SwedishOutdoor I agree with you a 100%. I have several ESEE knives and I love them all the same. I actually have three ESEE 4's. One in stainless steel, and it has performed very well every time. It stays razor sharp and is rust resistant. I use that one for camping in the winter time and fishing all year long. The other two ESEE 4's are 1095 carbon steel and have never rusted with simple maintenance and care. I use on my KEVLAR vest for close combat use. The other one stays on my duty belt for EDC. I do like the ESEE 6 just as well and would consider that one to be a better knife for all the same tasks.

Only have one knife in 1095 and two beckers in 1095 cro-van which perform very well. I don't have problems with edge retention, but I'm not one to be cutting things for hours on end. Also, I live on the Florida panhandle where it's very damp and humid and rust is not that big of an issue. If they get wet I dry them before putting them away. If they do get rust a little wd-40 takes it right off. Sand or dirt is great for removing rust also. Once your blade has a good patina rust is no issue at all! 1095 is cheap, only because it is more widely produced. Flood the market with anything and the price will plummet! With all that being said, I do have to agree that esee is way over priced, but so is bark river!

I'm sorry that people were too immature to listen to your review, and your opinion regarding a specific knife. Personally I agree with a lot of the things you stated that are negatives about the knife however I do own an esee 6 and use it as my main backpacking knife. I have found that after a few modifications stripping the coating, putting a 90 degree spine on it, and convexing The Edge as you did and it hold up decent with an RC of 57. That being said it will and has rusted, however I always have some sort of oil to help prevent rusting. I like the carbon steel because I'm able to strike sparks with a rock with a hardness greater than 7. Yes it does doll very easily, but I also find it extremely easy to hone woth a strop and or ceramic rod even a stone to get it back to sharp. If I was using it as a survival knife I would not worry about it rusting because if I'm stuck somewhere long enough that my knife is going to rust to the point where it's useless then I would probably have other problems. That's just my experience but I completely respect your opinion as well. Keep up the great videos and don't worry about the haters!
