I remember when I worked at Gamecrazy in my hometown in 2009, and like every game store, we had a good amount of outdated sports games that were in the $5 bin. So I would have this game playing on the upper corner TV and set the number of players to a CPU vs CPU match, and pretend an actual NFL game was on TV to get people's attention and go from there. We no longer had an overstock of the NFL 2K5 games after that.

@Nunya Bizness $20 brand new, which forced EA to lower the price of Madden, and being a fan of the 2K NFL games on Dreamcast.... it was an easy decision.

I can literally still play this game and get addicted. This is the greatest sports video game of all time. This generation doesn’t understand how far ahead of its time 2k was. I remember taking a 20$ bill to KMART to get this game.

I'm still playing 2K5. Just played it yesterday. If games can have a feel to them then this one feels like football. The game play, controls and presentation are unrivaled. Current Madden titles don't hold a candle to 2K5. If all I had was 2K5, I'm set for video-game football. It's the hallmark of an all time great game.

Yes! When a bad play happens, it's because I made a bad football decision, and not because the game is pulling some bullshit. I love the intense games when every single play and every single audible or hot route needs to be painstakingly chosen.

I literally stopped buying football games yearly after this game. I have never loved a football game again like I loved 2K5. Madden simply is boring. Logos and official teams can’t cover up a boring game.

I recently bought a PS2 to go back and play the old wrestling games because WWEk20 is awful. This was one of the games I snagged because its the best. I didn't expect to be still blown away and to still have fun playing. I'm doing a franchise with the Colts and killing it with Peyton Manning and Edgerin James. This is, the greatest football game ever made.

I remember getting this game because it was cheaper than madden. Best choice ever! My friends all had Madden but would come over to just play 2K5 instead. lol This game was so awesome! Madden doesn't even come close to ever being as good as this game was and still is.

Agree. I never owned the Xbox version back in the days but played at a friends house. I had the ps2 version and when I purchased an Xbox version I was an instant Xbox fan because it ran smoother and load times were fast and just played better overall

The MOST important thing this game absolutely murders Madden in is the fact that the games aren't rigged. Like there's no scripting, there's no catching up making it easier for the losing team. This game is PURE FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE AND GAME SKILL. I remember blowing people out by 80 or 90 and vice versa.

All Pro 2K8 is amazingly underrated as well. I'm crossing my fingers that 2K makes a XFL game. I know you talked about how awesome the halftime show is, but you can't forget to mention how excellent the weekly wrap up show is as well. Highlights from around the league. Pretty sure the reason the catch stood even though Jackson clearly only got 1 foot down is because the forceout rule still existed in 2004, so since he clearly would have landed in bounds if not for the DB pushing him out, it was ruled a catch. Would be cool if there was some way to mod the updated rules in but unfortunately that would be incredibly difficult and time consuming.

This was my senior year of high school, it was pretty much a 50/50 split between 2K/Madden loyalists.....people who had 2K knew what was up. I had a Sports Literature class that year and this was one of the only years that I was more into the NFL than the NBA, and it was largely because of this game. Great vid, Stevie!

I will remember looking for 2k6 and learning about the rights EA had. I was so disappointed because I've always hated everything about Maden games. It still bums me out to this day. I'm glad I'm not alone and thanks for making this video.

Not only do I play this game exclusively, I have figured out how to eliminate multiple interceptions while watching a CPU vs CPU game. I have no need for Madden if they aren't going to actually improve the game play, franchise mode, presentation, historic teams, nor customization. Great video, Stevie!

Lol a few years ago I was in a Gamers and was just looking around when I found ESPN NFL 2k5 for a whopping $4.99. I heard about the game before from MilesDawkins247 and figured hell, I’ll definitely give this game a try. Ever since this has been the best football game I’ve ever had. Madden 06 (ps2) also still holds a special place in my heart because it was the first football game I had and had a great soundtrack. The PS2 Maddens were still pretty good, and are way better than today’s Maddens and Xbox 360/PS3. But on top of all, is of course 2k5, nothing touches it when it comes to all the features and gameplay.

I love this game. I kill some much time playing Franchise mode! I play the same way as yourself where you let the presentation run all the way. I wish this game would have online again, sadly that hasn't been a thing for ages now. I also play it on my Original Xbox.

An underrated feature (XBOX) was the game using the music you had on your hard drive and playing it "in the stadium" before, during and after the game. I used to get so pumped when "Stand Up" by Ludacris would come on as the camera was panning across the stadium right before a game.

FirePro and ESPN2K5... A man of my own heart. I got Madden for the first time in years last year because it was available on PC. With their own halftime show hosted by Coach nonetheless but it still wasn't a patch on 2K5s.

In my Opinion, EA sports truly focus on the hype around athletics, which is meant for sales, while 2k sports, capture the fundamentals and behind the scenes of the sports world. You can notice it today in the nba 2k series. EA sports will always capture the fun, but God I miss nfl 2k, pure quality gaming

I ordered a custom modded Xbox 360 for a $100 just to play NFL 2K5 all pro football 2K8 and of course other great classics. Best decision I ever made miss playing these when I was little kid now I can play them anytime!

Miwelde Moore was the 3rd string Vikings RB and he was the best player in the game. I had regular 90+ yard runs with him where I'd break ten tackles. I'm talking breaking tackles from the same guy twice in the same play. He was insane. His AGI was off the charts.

I said this when it came out. Because the gameplay, challenges halftime break, interviews. And it still holds up til this day. PS4 & 5 come out with this.

After all these years, this game is STILL my favorite of all time. When EA bought out the exclusive rights of the NFL, they pretty much ruined gaming for me. But maybe one day....

I had an older Sega sport for the Dreamcast. It was buggy, but it was really cool calling the plays through the little VMU screen.

@Stevie Richards Watching this video & I agree. I remember buying this game for $20 & I thought it was going to be garbage,but when I popped the game in my PS2 & I almost had a Fred Sanford heart attack because it was THAT DAMN GOOD & MORE FUN!!!! I liked the updated rosters myself along with The Crib feature in which you unlock & have to accomplish milestones. The presentation are fluid & the playbooks are more diverse. You not only get the team PB's but you get to use the old school Cowboys offense & defensive PB's along with the 86 Giants,89 & 90 49ers & more. I forgot if this game had a Create-A-Playbook feature or not,but this game was just too deep,too fun & too good.
