College football expansion typically refers to the process of conferences adding new teams or schools joining different conferences. This can happen for various reasons, including financial considerations, geographic alignment, competitive balance, and television market expansion. Here are some key aspects of college football expansion:
Conference Realignment: Conference realignment is a significant aspect of college football expansion. Schools may switch conferences to align themselves with institutions that share similar geographic locations, academic profiles, or athletic competitiveness. This process can lead to changes in conference membership and the creation of new conference alignments.
TV Markets and Revenue: Television contracts play a crucial role in college football expansion. Conferences may seek to expand into new television markets to increase their revenue through broadcasting rights. Adding teams from populous areas or regions with strong television viewership can enhance a conference's bargaining power during negotiations with television networks.
Competitive Balance: Conference expansion can also aim to improve competitive balance within conferences. Adding new teams can strengthen the overall competitiveness of a conference and enhance the quality of matchups, which can be appealing to fans and broadcasters alike.
Geographic Footprint: Some conferences aim to expand their geographic footprint by adding teams from different regions. This expansion can increase the conference's exposure and fan base while also providing opportunities for increased revenue from ticket sales, merchandise, and sponsorships.
Impact on College Football Playoff (CFP): Conference expansion can have implications for the College Football Playoff (CFP) and the selection process for bowl games. A conference's strength and the quality of its member teams can influence its standing in the CFP rankings and its chances of securing playoff berths.
Logistical Considerations: There are logistical factors to consider in college football expansion, including travel distances for teams and fans, scheduling challenges, and academic implications for student-athletes.
Overall, college football expansion is a dynamic process driven by various factors, including financial interests, competitive considerations, and institutional goals. It can lead to significant changes in conference landscapes and impact the college football landscape as a whole.

I don't get the glee about the ACC exploding. The marquee teams will go to the SEC and Big Ten, and the scraps will head to the Big-12. If anything, it will even more solidify the feeling of a "Power Two" with everyone else a stepping stone for others in those leagues.

Due to the huge differences in tv money both the ACC and B12 are going to die or fall further and further behind. It's inevitable. I think it's likely that the best teams exit the NCAA (in football only) and form an elite league. I think most ACC and B12 teams get left out. In fact, I think only FSU, Clemson and Miami would be brought into an elite league. Maybe KSU, TCU and UNC as well. I hope this doesn't happen because I love the scappiness of the B12 (I'm an FSU fan but went to KSU for a year). It's not the best conference but it is absolutely the most competitive.

I can argue the death of the ACC initially happened when they chose BC over WVU.
@fwilliamcony28

The ACC raided the old Big East Conference twice excluding the late Louisville addition. The first time the ACC chose Miami, Va Tech and BC due to media markets and academics. Later on, Pitt and Syracuse joined the ACC due to instability within the Big East. Although I would have like to see WVU added to the ACC over a decade ago, there was no way the Tobacco Road schools, along with a couple other academic-conscious schools, would vote to admit WVU considering its mission to provide a college education to any WV resident who is minimally qualified academically.

I think everyone fails to understand that there is an eventuality here and what staggered path we take to that eventuality is really not that important. Top tier college football and basketball WILL break free from the NCAA and it WILL be a league much like a professional league. There will be two "conferences" north and south with four geographic divisions within. Whether they are the Big 10 or the SEC or just CFN (College Football North) and CFS ( College Footvall South), who really cares. The divisions may have 8 - 10 schools, meaning top tier college football will have 64 - 80 teams. Schedules will be formulaic, like a pro league. You will play your division opponents and then formulaically determined non division opponents. This is awesome. No more play for pay games. Playoffs will be formulaic with division winners and some number of wild cards that are determined with exact criteria including tiebreaker. No more voting or committee's etc.. . Thank goodness. It will all be a huge money windfall almost on par with the NFL. Popularity will be off the charts. In essence a minor league for football but with major league popularity due to the university affiliation. Players will be employees and paid well. Schools will be "owners". Salary cap and other financial aspects WILL be involved to promote parity All of this is a good and proper evolution.

Right now (With FSU, Clemson, UNC, Miami still in the ACC) each ACC school makes about $23.3 million. When those marquee ACC schools go off to make about $81 mil in the SEC or $100+ mill in the B1G and the ACC has to negotiate a new contract with ESPN, they won't make $23 mill anymore. It'll be a lot less without the brands. To the rest of the ACC teams, $32 mil per team in the Big 12 won't look so bad. I think the Big 12 has its tiered wish list that best fits the Big 12 culture -- Pitt, Louisville, VT. You now have a regional corner in the Big 12 that excites the fans when you add WVU and Cincinnati. Bridging UCF to those five schools would be either GT or NC State as the 20th member. The Big 12 has demonstrated it can beat the big boys. People route for the underdogs. Every time a Big 12 team beats a B!G/SEC school in non-conf play, opinions start to change as we solidify that we belong (remember, the transfer portal is creating parity across all conferences). At the next round of TV contract deals, the Big 12 could potentially make more money, thus closing the gap.

Teams will still need "automatic" wins. If teams like Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten lose their games vs Rutgers, IU, Michigan State and Purdue and instead replace those games with more traditional powers, they'll have to settle for seasons with 3 or 4 losses regularly. I don't think the Big brands will want to do that. Not to mention teams like Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue etc are all huge research institutions with massive and rich alumni bases. They travel and spend money. It's more profitable in the long run to keep them.

Notice mid-12 stans, talk more about the ACC than their own lame league. Somehow The big-12 expects to to still survive as a de facto relegation league. Mid 12 is Scared to death of the athletes getting fully paid because they know they can't afford it WHEN it happens. The unionized college athletes are going for at least 50 % of revenue and more! The 12 will be lucky to have a few million leftover... CW > ESPN 2 + plus + 2 Nobody is hunting for mid-12 games burried on ESPN's jv network. If grant of rights and contracts mean nothing then expect any team worth taking to escape from this mid-12 relegation league. Notice how they trash the ACC, then they rattle off and list at least half of the ACC teams which they want. Can't list many big-12 teams because nobody wants them. Facts.

No, you are wrong, the ACC will survive this bullshit. You @$$holes would love to see the ACC fail but that will not happen. You jackasses want to kill this conference, plain and simple. You tell me I know nothing about the ACC. You know nothing about me. I live right in the middle of ACC country and graduated from one of the best schools in the country. You guys are the ones who don't know a damn thing about the ACC. I'll say this. If the powers that be don't do something about that asshole Greg Sankey college sports will fall the hell apart. He is now trying to do the same thing to college basketball that he is doing to college football and the cfp. He thinks that the sec should have more teams with automatic berths in the basketball playoffs. He doesn't like the fact that small college teams get a chance to play in the tournament. He doesn't like the fact that smaller schools are beating the crap out of his teams in the sec. So he wants to ban them from that opportunity. That is what makes March Madness the best tournament in the entire world. His sec schools are getting their ass kicked in the tournament by supposedly weaker schools and I love it. I pull against the sec and their crying asshole commissioner cry baby sankey. You don't know it apparently but people in this state do not want what you jerks are selling with realignment. If you think so, then wait it out and see. Hell, fsu and clemson aren't leaving unless they want to pay up that half a billion green stamps. That's how strong the grant of rights is you dummies. Put that in your drag pipe and smoke it.
