Gaggia Classic Pro for life. I have a Gaggia Carezza Deluxe, I eliminated the native pressurized filter holder and replaced it with a classic one, unfortunately the pressure needs to be lowered by replacing the spring in the OPV. While with the Classic you just need to unscrew a couple of screws and the cover, the Carezza has a series of plastic pieces set together that need to be dismantled, there is a very serious risk of breaking the fasteners. The switches are also better in the Classic Pro. Having said that, now my coffee is excellent, Gaggia Carezza Delxue is always a Gaggia.

I was thinking of buying a Gran gaggia, or even the Carezza, but this was before I knew there was a difference between pressurised and non-pressurised. I want an upgrade on Nespresso so I can enjoy nice coffee beans, but I’m worried the flavour might get lost now on a pressurised machine, yet is a non-pressurised machine difficult to get right for a novice? Should I spend the extra and get the Gaggia Classic, or is the Gran/Carezza still a quality and reliable machine?

Hi David, Many people like the BDB. It packs in a lot of features for the price. What concerns me a bit is the appliance grade build. Not the same level of quality/durability as the Italian machines made by hand. If you treat the BDB right it can provide years of service. But, down the road if it needs a repair it may not be worth it. The Italian machines are very repairable and can run for decades. As GC Wieser suggested the Profitec Pro 300 is a similarly priced alternative in a machine grade product. Hope that helps! Marc

I have tried maromas orphea was surprised they are actually pretty good for a non fresh roasted makes a lot of crema too. A lot of commercial packaged coffee beans are not that great for me but Maromas have been pretty good. Maromas won't beat a freshly roasted beans from a high quality roaster but for the price cost its pretty good for the price comparable to what other commercial packaged beans cost.

Hi QG, Thanks for the kind comment and question. Not sure exactly what model you have but anything from Hamilton Beach is going to fall into the entry-level appliance category. At that level, espresso makers are lacking in capability. That said, they are a reasonable place to start with espresso. To go to the next level you will need a more capable machine and a decent grinder to pair with it. The Gaggia Classic Pro is a great next step! Marc

Hello Mark, is a higher-end grinder (800$ value for example) can improve coffee quality made from an appliance such as a Delonghi? Or it doesn't change anything?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi JP, Thanks for the question. If it's a Delonghi machine which uses a pressurized filter basket - typical on Delonghi machines then grinder upgrade will not do much. Don't get me wrong, better grind usually results in better espresso but in pressurized filter baskets super accurate grind size is not as critical as it is in standard non-pressurized filter basket. So quality increase with better grind is marginal. Marc

Hi Mark, I believe they do. Just makes sense that they would. I'll be honest I have very little personal experience with dual wall pressurized baskets as I very rarely use them. If I did I would soak them in a product like Cafiza to get the gunk out. Marc
@wR3BORNw
@wR3BORNw 4 жыл бұрын
They definitely do. In some of the sealed dual walled (multi hole into single hole) units they can completely clog up and then it's game over for that basket. Delonghi have had that issue on the sealed unit and replacements from them now come with the top part being removable probably due to the amount of RMAs.

@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks for the question. While Gaggia does not make a non-pressurized filter basket or bottomless PF for the Carezza there may be some available from 3rd party manufacturers. Keep in mind the Carezza was is intended to use a pressurized filter basket so results from 3rd party parts are unknown. Additionally, the maximum coffee dose in the Carezza is less than what you can put in a 58mm standard portafilter. If you move up to the machine grade Gaggia Classic it comes with both pressurized and non-presurized filter baskets, 58mm commercial size and weight portafilter and a naked portafilter is available: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/portafilters-and-filter-baskets/products/gaggia-bottomless-portafilter The naked portafilter comes with a triple shot basket too! @cmacd8879
@cmacd8879 4 жыл бұрын
Karen L. - our house also uses both decaf and regular beans (in an original 2004 Silvia!); in our case more regular. Hence our grinder normally has regular beans in it, and weekly or when needed I grind a 'batch' of decaf, stored in a sealed plastic container, that gets dipped into for decaf shots. I find the decaf beans usually to be drier than a regular med-dark roast, so perfect shots need one click finer grind on our Rancilio Rocky grinder while grinding the 'batch', (but as Marc says dialing in is the same process). You might be just the reverse if your house just occasionally uses regular beans.

I would suggest a better entry level appliance would be the Breville Barista Express. Feature wise it sits somewhere between these two. It has several advantages over the Carezza. Inclusion of both pressurised and unpressurised baskets, a proper, if still 54mm, portafilter, solenoid valve, adjustable PID temperature control and, as a cherry on top, a burr grinder. For someone new to home espresso it is still easy to start with but allows a lot more room to develop skills and experiment with before moving up to a proper machine. Of course, for anyone not interested in the coffee making process just get a fully automatic.

Hi Marc, I totally agree about the integrated grinder. For me the Barista Express has been a great way to get into making espresso at home, but it lacks the fine control and consistency of a true machine. The coffee I get from it ranges from okay to good even when I think I have it dialed in. If I was buying again today, I would choose something a little more up market and a good quality grinder. The Barista Express manual does claim that it has a PID and you can adjust it up or down by a couple of degrees.

Luigi Bezzera did it in 1901...but I'm guessing espresso machines go back farther. -- BR

Hi Bill, Thanks for the response. Bezzera's machines back then used steam. Incidentally, I spent some time with Luigi's great, great, grandson Luca a couple of years ago at their production facility near Milan. Even went to the castle in Milan and found the inspiration for the Bezzera logo. If interested here a video from my visit which includes a factory tour: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gb9hZ7F1nMWpqKc.html Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage Well, I still think of him as one of the "Founding Fathers" of the espresso scene. And as one site said, "Luigi Bezzerra and Desiderio Pavoni were the Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs of espresso." When I saw the date 1938, I thought that was WAY too "current events." IMO, whenever it was being called "espresso," then that's how far back it goes, no matter how it was made. Wish I had the opportunity like you did to go visit Italy and espresso equipment making companies (such as VBN also in Milan) -- but all I got to see was this video by Rocket: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdeBjLWCps61aJs.html My "virtual tour" of a typical prosumer-class espresso machine "factory." Still, I'm pretty sure what you see here is how MOST of the prosumer espresso machines are made in Italy -- by relatively small companies and mostly family-run (Mom & Pop)...so I just "extrapolate" from this Rocket video to see how the OTHER brands are made. But presently, given the raging virus-crisis, NOW is not the BEST time to go to Italy? ;-) Happy Flow-Controlling, -- BR

Ive since bought a brevill barista express, tossed my cheap machine that broke in 4 days. Still get better shots with the 1:3 or 1:4 ratios. Maybe its the lowest temp setting im using maybe its some other variable. Im using non pressurized baskets now. I use about 16 grams which is easy to not spill. Its pretty good shots im getting. I realized the longer pre infusion tastes better than a short one. The short ones were making my shots really really strong.

Hi MO, The Carezza does have a 53mm filter basket so 53mm tamper is what you want. Here's a selection of 53mm tampers: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/tampers?_=pf&pf_t_tamper_diameter=tamp_diameter%3A53mm Marc
