ESR SHIFT vs REBOUND HYBRID 360 for 2024 iPad Pro 11” (M4): Which is the better iPad Pro case?

Got a new iPad Pro (M4)? Trying to decide between the ESR SHIFT and ESR REBOUND HYBRID 360? I have both cases, and in this video, I’ll compare them side by side. REBOUND HYBRID (Amazon affiliate): amzn.to/4bzKfsh / SHIFT (Amazon affiliate): amzn.to/3WTmTcq
Both are good cases, with a removable inner case, folio cover, portrait and landscape positions, multiple stand angles, charging and storage for Apple Pencil, and auto sleep/wake…but they do have a lot of differences as well. The SHIFT is going to be thicker and heavier and it lacks a magnetic closure flap for the folio cover. With the SHIFT, it’s also not possible to charge the Apple Pencil Pro while it’s in the secure storage position. But on the plus side, the SHIFT has the most stand angles (9), the stand is extremely secure due to its magnetic positioning grooves, and your iPad can be placed in a special elevated landscape position in addition to the standard landscape and portrait modes. The exterior of the SHIFT is made of a grippy, textured material that is very fingerprint resistant and the design of the SHIFT makes it very easy and comfortable to use when it is on a lap or other soft, uneven surfaces.
The REBOUND HYBRID 360, on the other hand, is smaller and lighter weight. The exterior of the folio case is made of a soft, smooth material that has a pleasant feel in the hand and the inner case features a transparent back so you can enjoy looking at your beautiful iPad Pro through the case. The REBOUND HYBRID 360 has a magnetic flap that will secure both the Apple Pencil Pro in a charging position and keep the folio cover closed. This case allows you to position your iPad in both portrait and landscape orientations and you can either use a front stand that allows multiple angles or fold the folio cover into triangular support in the back of the iPad Pro for a fixed angle stand. As long as you use the REBOUND HYBRID 360 on a flat surface, the stand works fine. But if you try to use the REBOUND HYBRID 360 on a soft or uneven surface such as a lap, the stand is less successful. This case is also more prone to fingerprints, particularly on the transparent inner case. And the magnets aren’t quite as strong as the ones on the SHIFT.

These cases are both available directly from ESR as well as from Amazon, although the prices are usually lower on Amazon. The REBOUND HYBRID 360 is priced between $29.99 to $35.99 on Amazon depending on the color chosen. It comes in black, white, lavender, blue, pink, and grey. The SHIFT is priced between $42.99 to $47.99 on Amazon and is currently available in black and blue…there should be a purple version available later as well. Thank you. I originally purchased both and was so sold on the Rebound until I saw your review. I primarily use it on my lap, so although I love the look and security for charging my pencil I don’t like the fingerprint magnet and floppy case. In reality I will only be using my iPad at home except for trips, and then I plan to purchase a 3rd party pencil for when I’m away so I don’t lose my ridiculously expensive Apple Pencil. Your review helped me weigh the pros and cons of both, and the cons of the Rebound outweighed those of the Shift, so I’m keeping the Shift…thanks

Hi Mary! Yep...absolutely agree with you. The Rebound Hybrid 360 is nice and slim, but if you are looking for better magnets, more positions and greater stand functionality, then the ESR Shift is the way to go.😊

Another great video from you 👍🏼 I just recently bought an ESR Rebound 360 Keyboard for my iPad Air 5. Your review on that Produkt totaly convinced me. Do you know if the Case from the ESR Rebound 360 Keyboard is compatible with both of the covers (Hybride Case 360 and Magnetic Case)? Or would you recommend other covers combined with the Case from the ESR Rebound 360 Keyboard instead? Thank you in advance 😊

Hi Manuel! Thanks so much for your kind words! I don’t have any experience with the Rebound 360 Keyboard Case for the iPad Air 5…just the 2022 and 2024 iPad Pro 11 inch models. But with those two versions, I found zero mix and match ability across ESR case types. You would think it would work…but it doesn’t. Very unfortunate!!

That hanging flap on the Rebound (seen at 3:27) bouncing around is a hard deal-breaker for me, as is the finger print issue on the inner case, plus overall wobbly construction. Got the Shift instead and it is awesome; so versatile. Magnets work perfectly. Very stable and secure in all tilt positions. The inner case fit is the most precise and responsive I’ve seen so far for the iPad Pro 11 (M4). The added weight of the combined system is insignificant to me and the slender, removable inner case more than makes up for it anyway. Also when all together the Shift feels really safe and secure for the iPad.

The hanging flap can magnetically stick to either side of the case. She just didn’t press it down.

I tried both. The weak front cover magnets on the Shift were a deal breaker for me. It flaps open if you don’t hold it closed. Even when holding it closed you can feel the front cover moving around. I fear that if you picked up a small piece of grit on the cover, the sliding motion might result it screen scratches. The Shift just didn’t feel good in the hand. On the other hand, I have found the Rebound to be great option for trips away from the house, great full body protection and lots of flexibility in viewing angles.

You make some excellent points, Leigh. Thanks for sharing! The secure closure of the Rebound Hybrid is definitely a pro. I think the best case for iPad Pro is going to depend upon individual use and preferences. I don’t tend to take my iPad Pro out and about on a regular basis, so the secure closure is less of an issue for me, for example…

Can you measure the exact weights of each of the 2 inner cases that stay on the iPad? That's the thing I wanted to know the most as it's the weight I will actually be holding most of the time.

I don’t have a way to do that, unfortunately. (Don’t have a proper scale for that, and I’m also away from home on vacation right now.) However, when holding the two inner cases in my hands, I had the feeling that they were pretty much equivalent in weight.

Unfortunately, the Shift closes only so so. There is no strap to keep things securely closed, and the magnetic attraction is not that strong…

Sorry for the delay in answering your question, Scott. I was away on vacation and couldn't try it out. So, with the Rebound Hybrid case, you can fold the folio cover to the back, and use the magnetic flap to hold it closed, but without that, it won't attach strongly to the back when folded back. There is a very small amount of magnetic attachment, but not enough to hold it in place. Keep in mind, however, that you can always just remove the inner case from the outer folio case and then you don't have to mess with the folio cover at all. Sadly, no. There is no mix and match compatibility between any of ESR's iPad Pro cases, at least as far as I've been able to ascertain. I think this is because the magnets have to be in different positions to have different capabilities. So sorry!!

Wish the Rebound has as strong or stronger magnet than the shift. I’m guessing the clear back prevent them from putting more magnets. Wish they change it to the shift inner piece.

You can hang the rebound on a fridge, I've done it with my 13" Pro. It seems to somehow make the magnetics on the Ipad stronger or something. I couldn't do this with a regular clear case.

@@Slipsch it’s more than strong enough as I need to use some force to get it off the fridge. Looking at the case, it seems the magnets are on the side and it’s pretty strong, maybe not as strong as the shift, but plenty strong to stay on the fridge.

Sadly, the ESR case parts are not interchangeable...at least none of the ones I have, anyway. The magnets are positioned differently...very frustrating! The Shift won't play nice with the Rebound 360 keyboard case, the Rebound Hybrid case, etc...

Great video, I was curious on the magnetic case on the hybrid case. Is it able to magnetize to like a refrigerator or other metal objects like the shift case or no?

Kind of.... The magnets on the Rebound 360 Hybrid case will attach onto a metal fridge, but not as strongly as those on the Shift. When I attach the inner case of the Shift to my fridge, I can immediately tell that the connection is strong enough that I can leave my iPad Pro stuck on there without worrying that it might fall. With the Rebound 360 Hybrid, I don't have so much confidence. It will stick on to the fridge, but I'm afraid that over time, it might start sliding down.

Is the one with the clear backing likely to scratch the iPad? I saw in a different review that the shift case has thin padding on the interior of the case so that it doesn’t scratch the back.

I don’t think the clear backed Rebound Hybrid is likely to scratch your iPad Pro. And the Shift is not much softer in the interior…any lining there is exceedingly thin. The real risk for scratching with either case is getting dirt or dust trapped inside the case, in between the iPad and the case. That’s what can cause scratching.😊

Excellent question. I feel like the Shift is probably more protective overall, but it tragically lacks a strap to keep it closed. So unless you have a dedicated laptop pocket or something to slide the Shift into (an enclosure that will keep its cover folded securely closed), then the Rebound Hybrid is probably going to be more protective. Neither is drop rated, though. If you are looking for a case with drop protection, you might want to take a look at one of ZAGG's cases: the Crystal Palace Folio or Denali. They both offer 2 meters of drop protection. Hope this helps!

@Manan_Agrawal056 unfortunately, I’m not sure if either comes with a strap to hold it closed. I reviewed the Crystal Palace Folio, and I can tell you that it doesn’t have a strap, but I can’t tell from the description of the ZAGG Denali if it does or not…

The 13" version of the shift is $20 more, so I went with the rebound. I don't use my ipad on my lap so that feature is useless for me. The rebound is heavy enough, I don't want more weight that the shift brings with it.
