Continuing a series on the essentials of Buddhism from 1974 at Naropa University, Joseph Goldstein plunges further into the essentials of Buddhism with a lecture on The Eightfold Path.
Climbing the Invisible Mountain (00:10)
Truths from the Eightfold Path (10:47)
The Ripple Effect (35:46)
Motivation to be Mindful (1:01:32)
“The reason the mountain is invisible is that it is not outside of ourselves. So that as long as we are looking outside, externally, we will never be able to find it. It will remain invisible to our eyes. The mountain is within and it takes an inward looking both to find it and to begin the climb.” - Joseph Goldstein

Reconcile "Right Effort" with effortlessness. If you do, you are in a good place.

I found this lecture profound and almost everything resonated deeply. The only thing I can’t grasp around and disagree is the example with the fish. For me the intention behind the action of killing and the reason matters and the quality of state of mind differs, depending on the individual and the circumstances.

It's an easier path to justify the continuation of things we are attached to. Killing animals for selfish gain is killing. Plants give us everything we need to be strong and healthy.

@@guhlobtrekker Maybe you are right, I don’t know. Plants are life too, although yes they don’t have advanced psychological structure like animals. Perhaps, we could question even that… They are living organisms though, and even science have evidence that trees may have ways to communicate…They are life as much animals and humans, is all I’m saying. Eating in moderation, animal products included, and only for survival purposes I don’t see how it’s selfish. One could even save another by giving him 2 fishes to feed himself and maybe even his children, for example… Now, the ways humans use in modern society and how we handle animals, is another topic with many branches around morality and ethical behaviour.

@@Alex722 You can always make an argument to justify something you want to continue doing.. as Joseph explained in the discussion when asked about eating animals, he points to the need to kill and the suffering/pain experienced that is our indicator that such actions are sign posts. Each of us must come to our own conclusion but the signposts are there for a reason. Manu who have climbed the internal mountain have come to the same conclusions... which are that eating animals is not The Way, but rather contributing to pain and suffering cycles and is unnecessary. The karma of murdering animals creates what...Peace? It perpetuates more pain and suffering. When you see these sign posts.. you will know what is "right action". No one can climb the mountain for you.

@@guhlobtrekker I recognise completely the truth in the last sentence. To be honest I’ve noticed that, without making a conscious choice about it, I’m inclined more to plant based food sources in the last 2-3 months. Although I still eat animal products but way less than before. I was never attached to what I eat and never cared about diet labels and stuff like that. I always ate, and still do, from all food sources animal and plants. But as I said yes, I’ve increased the plant based foods and decreased the animal products without making an effort. I don’t feel the need to justify any behaviour, I’m just trying to find the truth through my experience and not accept or deny anything, just because someone said it. Thank you by the way, I’ve totally forgotten about my initial comment and probably I wouldn’t articulate it in the same way now.
