This is what I like about G.I., he owns a record shop, obviously well versed with music, but not pretentious. Humbly admitting he is a novice when it comes to jazz music just show's us that he is a legit avid music lover. Kudos man!

Some great suggestions! I'm also a huge fan of Grant Green. If you want to hear acoustic jazz guitar check out Joe Pass. He did four albums called Virtuoso (Volumes I-IV) and those are a great place to start. On piano I have to mention fellow Canadian Oscar Peterson. I also love the early Herbie Hancock records, anywhere from his debut up to Speak Like a Child. His record Inventions and Dimensions has two latin percussionists, and that adds a wonderful dimension to the music.

Blossom Dearie, awesome female jazz vocalist and pianist, Bill Evans trio are also good and I also like jazz drummer Art Blakey. Like you I’ve just started to “dip my toes” into the jazz genre and wonder why I didn’t listen sooner!

Miles Davis's tribute to jack Johnson is a good LP for a rock listener crossover album as well as Herbie Mann's Push Push featuring Duane Allman. Another good one is Getz Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto's voice cuts through your system so smooth.

Another great video man! If you like Headhunters - check out Eddie Henderson - Sunburst, Heritage, Inside Out - its the headhunters band (Paul Jackson, Mike Clark, Bennie Maupin, Bill Summers) without Herbie but Eddie Henderson in his place. Also, Headhunters with Herbie - Thrust, Manchild, and FLOOD (live in Japan 1975). If you like Kenny Burrell - anything with Grant Green on it you will love. Lou Donaldson has some amazing later stuff (late 60's early 70's) with Idris Muhammad, Leon Spencer, Rusty Bryant, Melvin Sparks and they have a bunch of albums on Prestige (some re issued on VMP) that are amazingly funky and groovy. Mr Sing A Ling, and Alligator Boogaloo have been re issued from Blue Note - but that group pops up all over the place look out for them.

Very interesting. Jazz is something I'm not necessarily sure about but would like to check out. I just don't know how to classify some jazz. I mentioned a friend giving me about 400 LPs back in April that I've been going through. A lot of them are classified as jazz fusion, electric jazz, jazz piano, jazz this, and jazz that. So the stuff like Coltrane or the other names I hear a lot, I don't think I've heard it yet. And a lot of the stuff that was in my friend's collection from the late '60s through the early '80s (when he collected it) is very time-consuming going through it and not exactly what I was hoping it might be. I've heard so many rock and rollers talking about jazz that I have come to the conclusion there has to be something out there that is either very good or very contagious in jazz. And I do like to try to check out the various genres to see if there is something I'm missing and like alot. I just can't pay $150 plus tax for something I've never heard of. But I know they're not all that expensive also. And I know there are some a lot more expensive too. Just the ones everybody's talking about seem to be so expensive haha. I think if I spent $175 after shipping for something like Miles Davis, I would make myself like it even if I didn't. It's too bad that I guess Amazon doesn't have a lot of these releases. At least then if it was something I just totally did not like I could probably call them and I'm pretty sure they would take it back? It's an expensive road to go down it sounds like but I would be interested in exploring it at some point. So thanks for some of the recommendations GI and I will keep my eyes and ears open. BTW, I'll have to look but that Grant Green that you keep mentioning has peaked my interest. What years was his music from? I seem to remember seeing at least one or two Grant Green LPs and that collection possibly? I'm not sure but I'm definitely going to go back through the non-rock and roll albums I haven't listened to yet and see if I can find that artist. I just wish I could have a better understanding on the categorization of what type of jazz it is everyone is looking for. Is it just called jazz? Or is it some other name added to the word jazz also? Great video, just getting into vinyl and know just a little about jazz. Blues is another genre I’ve been exploring and like jazz has a lot of history and sub genres, cheers!

In 2014 I stumbled into a subscription that Music Direct sold me on and I'm glad they did. I was just getting more deep into jazz though I was in jazz band in high school so I knew a lot of the names. The subscription was Music Matters Blue Note Jazz Series and it was kinda one of those "12 of the best Blue Note albums you have to have" deals sent to you every other month. I'm listening to Somethin' Else from that series now after watching your video. As for a couple you didn't mention - Herbie Hancock: Maiden Voyage is fantastic as is The Cape Verdean Blues by The Horace Silver Quintet plus J J Johnson and you gotta hear The Sidewinder by Lee Morgan and Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Drum Suite... I know - they can't all fit in a 30 minute video!!! Thanks again for your videos!

I recommend “The Phantom” by Duke Pearson on Blue Note. You’ll love it. Also, Sonny Rollins “Saxophone Colossus” or “Way Out West” For something a bit more out of left field, try a couple of jazz albums from the ECM label, like “Belonging” by Jan Garbarek and Keith Jarrett.

G. I. wow!!! All great picks!❤ Like you I grew up as a Rock guy. I was into all Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Who, Stones, Beatles, etc. Got heavy into jazz around 2006. May I suggest Oliver Nelson- “Blues And The Abstract Truth” This has the same vibe as “Kind Of Blue” and “Somethin’ Else.” Very smooth with a lot of space. Awesome video!!!
