One thing you didn’t mention was that a firm handshake was, and still is, a signature of agreement when making a commitment. A man’s word and firm handshake used to mean something. For me, it still does.

There is history to your observation. I lived for some years in the great Hanseatic city of Hamburg in North Germany. I learnt about the fascinating history of the Hanseatic League, in whose world handshake-sealed agreements were serious commitments, to the point that a broken word was often enforced with grave consequences.

In county, where I grew up. Men always handshake when they see each other. ALWAYS when we see each other. And last 10 years I live in US, and this art is definitely lost. You said it’s bad to get a sloppy handshake, but way worse when a person doesn’t realize why you’re giving him his hand. I wish this message spreads 🙏🏻

I've grown to value the meaning that can be carried in a handshake. In my late teens a little over 20 years ago I was greeting people coming to church. One older gentleman's handshake changed how I see that interaction. It was firm without being overbearing and conveyed compassion or maybe empathy and attention to the interaction. It was the only time I ever saw that man, probably visiting family from out of town, but I'm grateful to him for what he taught a teen with a simple handshake.

Just as important as a good firm handshake, is looking the person directly in the eye at that moment. The level of other facial expressions at the moment, depends on the situation. Sometimes a big smile is right, sometimes just a faint smile is more appropriate. Sometimes if it’s a coming together to settle a dispute type of situation, just a stern, serious look is the appropriate face to put on. A firm handshake and direct eye contact are the givens. The rest is up to you.

So I had a lot of rural customers and the first thing when I met the farmer, orchard owner... Was a warm greating and a firm handshake. I could tell most of the time by the hand shake if we were going to do business or not. If the person returned my hearty greating and firm hand shake, I was halfway to closing that sale.

He's not too young. Start from his infancy to reach for his right hand with yours as you make eye contact when first coming together after any separation. Say "Good morning" or "Hello, Son" as you do this. Be cheerful, but do not use baby talk when you do it. Lay him down or walk away from him in his mother's arms with the same treatment. Call him "Sir" or "Young Sir" or "Good Young Man" frequently. Remember he's just a boy, but NEVER forget that he will soon be a man. Set the expectations lovingly high and be the pattern.

Much to my dismay, many times I've gone in for a handshake with a seemingly burly dude-- masculine-- and been met with either the Cod fish or, equally bad, the partially cupped hand that makes a firm grip impossible. It's awkward to the extreme. When I was much younger (pre- and early teens), many fathers of my friends would commend my firm grip (even as young as i was), and they'd remark that a good, firm handshake defined good character. My father taught me that when I was so young I barely remembered it even then. Ever since, I've never really trusted a man who couldn't shake hands like a man.

I endorse everything Scott said in this video. Allow me to add one thing: many of us have arthritis in our hands. In such a case, a too firm handshake can cause unintentional pain to the recipient. With practice, it is possible to give a handshake that neither causes pain to the infirm nor is it like a dead fish. All we're looking for is firm. Anything more than that can be as bad, if not worse, than a limp handshake.

Being an "inactive" Marine, I also have developed an enjoyment of a "good handshake," but like your friend have broken a few bones (regrettably) of those that offer up a "dead fish" when they stick out their paw. I was raised in the LDS church, and though I have mixed feelings about the Church as an organized religion, I am forever grateful for the handshake greeting I exchanged with the Elder greeters outside of the chapel entry (back when meetings were separated am/pm) - it was extended to all - children and adults. The confidence it gave me to reach my hand out in both social and professional contexts is profound. It’s a tell-all - all is revealed in this very simple social exchange. Weak handshakers are called out or simply dismissed.

Great video, this should be a PSA. It seems today that a lot of younger people are less familiar with the formality of a handshake. Grab the other person's hand, look them in the eye and smile. It starts all negotiations off on the right foot. Be engaged!
@jaymzx0
@jaymzx0 Ай бұрын
The physical side of a firm handshake is exactly what it sounds like. Firm. You're not out to squeeze the life out of the other person's hand, but when the hands engage and you get that sweet spot where the web of the thumbs meet, it's a mild squeeze but more importantly, unyielding. It should be like presenting a hand made of wood that yields slightly, but is strong underneath. It gives the impression that my word and my presence is as strong as this wooden hand I present to you. I suppose that's the best way I can describe it. Like anything, it takes practice, so shake hands and make deals often. Make every one count, too.

This reminds me of a dear freind from my church when I was growing up. She was an elderly lady named MaryKay Wills. Every Sunday she would extend her hand for a handshake. The first time, being afraid of hurting her frail little hand, I gave her the "ole dead fish" handshake. She pulled her hand back and instructed me on how a young man should be shaking hands and that he should also be aware as to whether he is causing discomfort to the one that he is shaking the hand of. Valuable information that has served me well throughout my lifetime, and that I have passed along. I am always pleased at the end of every Board of Review for a Boy Scout rank in Troop 108 in Fort Mill, SC, that the scout is always presented the hand of the adults in the room that just completed his review for rank. Often, for the new scouts who are in for their first review, the "ole dead fish" makes an appearance, but it gives us an opportunity to provide feedback and explain why a firm, but controlled handshake is so important.

Thank you for this candid, frank and so appropriate presentation. A handshake tells so much about a man and his self-image. You mention the limp-handed floppy shake, but there's the insecure guy who grabs your hand in a kind of strike, threatening to take off your thumb. Or the vice-grip knuckle-cruncher. Then there's the arm wrestler who starts his handshake from the shoulder and biceps. Or the guy who grabs and jerks your arm to unbalance you. Like I said, they all speak of the personality of the man.

As the father of two daughters I have made this a matter of importance. When you shake someone’s hand, be firm and look them in the eye. It makes such a good first impression.

Thanks for reinforcing what is being lost on a lot of the younger generation. I lost my Dad when i was young but my Uncle stepped up and taught me the value of a good firm handshake. Thanks again!

Same as a salute in the military, as warriors approached each other it was customary to show an open hand and respect.

Not silly at all, an affirmation that just gave me what I and so many of us deeply, deeply miss. Hi Scott, I'm so glad I watched the video.

I was in high school and met my buddy’s uncle. I shook his hand and he immediately offered me a job. He was a higher up of some sort at the Huntsville prison here in Texas. I felt pretty damn good about that.

Pretty neat to see this! I would like to say in support to your presentation. Shaking hands is a physical touch that is safe for human beings when greeted and displays trust.

Was taught as a young kid that a good firm handshake goes a long way, now as I get older you can really tell just from a handshake what type of person you're dealing with

I love this episode. I’m constantly coaching youngsters on the importance of a firm handshake, making them redo it. My wife rolls her eyes but coming from a construction background it is really important. It says I’m here and I’m formidable. Keep up the good episodes

Not silly at all, desperately important, concisely put and key to almost all our interactions, thank you! I would only add there is a key moment matching where you don’t seek to dominate but you seek to meet as an equal as a foundation Stone of your future interactions

Years ago I had to get a roof replaced and got a bunch of quotes. A lot of them had all kinds of legalized paper work that I would have to fill out had I gone with that particular outfit. I ran across a guy that worked in the area on neighbors stuff and wanted the work and came at a fair price but his paper work was a hand shake. I went with him and never regretted it.

I'm 81 and have always expected to shake hands and do not appreciate a dead fish handshake either.. These days I seldom shake hands because I don't often meet new people and only a few of those I do meet offer a handshake. I always try to force the handshake or even a hug with family members and its always easily returned. My SIL has a great and firm handshake. I really like that man. The other is more prone to hug but his handshake is good too. I have to admit that many people these days do not really know what a handshake is or what it offers to a greeting.. If they are younger than fifty, I seldom get the handshake offer any more. A sorry affair in my book. Meeting new people is more an undesirable act than it should be due this loss in real communication efforts on the part of the younger generations. Nothing starts a new friendship better than a good solid handshake IMHO.

100% agreed, I also always make a point to look directly into the eyes of the person I've shaken hands with and have begun a conversation with. I've always felt it's disrespectful to not look directly st the person I'm speaking to.

IT's not about the force applied but the firmness and engagement. Much like shaking a child's hand it can be firm but not terribly strong.

One thing to add, a lot of folks have carpal tunnel or multiple scaphoid bone breaks or really bad arthritis. Well i got all that, but i also have this thing called a dyna flex powerball. It’s like a gyroscope that wants to fly out of your hand and it has helped me immensely. I have regained my death grip and you need that with a trowel or a chainsaw. Look it up, hope that helps somebody. Thanks for the video Scott, you rule

There really is nothing worse than a bad handshake but I prefer not to if I can avoid it especially after Covid. I try not to shake hands with people I don't know. Fun fact, handshakes were originally forearm shakes to make sure the other person wasn't hiding a weapon un their sleeve.

I've noticed the cod-fish grip from some elderly folks - I've always interpreted it as kind of a "how do you do, I have nothing to prove to you" kind of gesture. I myself like to give a firm one with solid eye contact. ha
